Four shot dead during homecoming weekend in Mississippi town

Four people were killed in a shooting in the Mississippi Delta region following a high school football homecoming game, Mississippi state Sen. Derrick Simmons told The Associated Press. The incident occurred in the downtown area of the small town of Leland, Mississippi, where people had gathered after the game. Simmons, who represents the area, confirmed the information based on updates received from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement authorities involved in the investigation.

In addition to the four fatalities, four other victims were hospitalized in Greenville and later flown to a larger medical facility in the state capital, Jackson.

Authorities are currently seeking an 18-year-old man for questioning in connection with the shooting, according to a statement from the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff has urged anyone with information to contact the local police chief or sheriff’s office.

The shooting took place on the school campus during the Heidelberg Oilers’ homecoming football game on Friday night. However, it remains unclear exactly when the gunfire occurred or how close it was to the stadium.

Sheriff White, who was at the scene investigating on Saturday, stated, “Right now we’ve still got a subject at large, but I can’t give specifics.” He added that more information may be released in the coming days.

Leland is a small town of about 640 residents, located approximately 85 miles (137 kilometers) southeast of Jackson, the state capital.

IAS Shekhar Singh Bids Farewell To Pimpri Chinchwad After Transformative Three-Year Tenure As PCMC Commissioner

**Pimpri-Chinchwad: PCMC Commissioner Shekhar Singh Transferred to Nashik as Kumbh Mela Commissioner**

Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) Commissioner and Administrator Shekhar Singh has been transferred to Nashik. He will now take charge of preparations for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela as Commissioner of the Nashik Kumbh Mela Authority. The Maharashtra State Government issued the transfer order earlier this week, marking the end of Singh’s impactful three-year tenure at the helm of PCMC.

Singh joined PCMC as its chief in August 2022. His posting was rather unusual for the city, as he operated without any mayor, general body, or political party officially intervening in his work. Despite this, Singh made a significant impact on the PCMC area, spearheading many key decisions during his tenure.

In an emotional post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Singh expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve. He described his time in Pimpri Chinchwad as one of the greatest honours of his career. Singh thanked the officers, civic staff, elected representatives, industry partners, and citizens who worked alongside him. “Together, we transformed aspirations into achievements,” he wrote, highlighting how collective efforts helped shape a “cleaner, smarter, and more inclusive city.”

### Key Achievements During Singh’s Tenure

Under Singh’s leadership, Pimpri Chinchwad made significant strides in various sectors:

– **Urban Development and Cleanliness:** The city achieved its highest-ever ranking in the Swachh Survekshan survey, securing first place in Maharashtra and seventh nationally.
– **Sustainability Initiatives:** PCMC launched Maharashtra’s first waste-to-energy plant and became the first civic body in India to issue a Green Municipal Bond for sustainable mobility projects.
– **Recognitions:** The city earned an IGBC Platinum Green City rating, the Bloomberg BICI Award, and top ranks in the Majhi Vasundhara Abhiyan.
– **Education Reforms:** Singh focused on strengthening civic schools by enhancing learning outcomes, improving infrastructure, and boosting girl enrolments. He noted that rising parental confidence reflected the city’s growing emphasis on quality and inclusion.
– **Citizen-Centric Governance:** Initiatives like participatory and climate budgeting, Zero Waste Slums, the Lighthouse Project, and Navi Disha brought citizens to the centre of governance.

### Challenges and Public Debates

Despite these achievements, Singh’s administration faced challenges and criticism. Decisions related to the city’s draft Development Plan, infrastructure projects, and demolitions in certain localities sparked public debate. However, Singh maintained that every decision was made with the long-term welfare of the city in mind.

### About Shekhar Singh

Shekhar Singh is a 2012 batch IAS officer. Before his role at PCMC, he served as District Collector in Satara and Zilla Parishad Chief in Sindhudurg. Now appointed as Kumbh Mela Commissioner in Nashik, Singh is expected to play a crucial role in overseeing one of India’s largest religious gatherings.

The Maharashtra government has already begun large-scale planning for the Simhastha Kumbh Mela, including improvements in sanitation, mobility, river cleaning, and civic infrastructure. Singh’s strong track record at Pimpri Chinchwad has raised expectations for a well-organised, sustainable, and citizen-friendly Kumbh Mela.

In his farewell message, Singh wrote:
“I carry with me immense pride, gratitude, and faith in the continued progress of this remarkable city. Pimpri Chinchwad will always remain close to my heart — a city that doesn’t just grow but evolves together.”

Kearny school opens new library, expands opportunities for students

After years without a library, the General Philip Kearny School now boasts a fully equipped space where students can access books, computers, and a variety of learning resources. This new addition is part of a broader effort to provide tailored academic programs—including Algebra I for eighth graders—as well as extracurricular activities like music and dance.

With strong community support and a focus on equity, Kearny is creating an inclusive environment that supports both students and their families.

“Our staff, along with the community, came together to create this library space,” said Principal Sabrina Scott-Feggins. “It’s filled with culturally rich books, computers, and other valuable resources.”

A retired librarian has volunteered to help organize the library and train both students and teachers on how to use it effectively. “We even have resources that allow us to work with our parents in that space,” Scott-Feggins added.

**Tailored Academic Programs**

To help prepare students for the next level, Kearny not only participates in all of the school district’s academic initiatives but has also introduced Algebra I for eighth graders. Scott-Feggins explained that early exposure to high school-level math gives students a strong foundation and a competitive edge as they transition into high school.

“We often discuss equity and access for students, but we don’t always follow through with the next step,” she said. “This year, we’re taking that next step by offering Algebra I to our eighth graders, and we’re really excited about it.”

Scott-Feggins emphasized how Kearny is tailoring instruction to meet each student’s unique needs, moving away from a one-size-fits-all approach.

“For instance, we have two fifth-grade girls who are performing at their grade level but receive reading and math instruction at a sixth-grade level,” she explained. “They spend part of the period learning with their peers, then move on to enrichment in the higher-level class.”

“This is the kind of individualized support we provide. We also hold conferences with families when a student is struggling. We identify the challenges and develop a plan tailored to each student’s needs,” she added. “We avoid a blanket approach to learning and focus on equitable practices that meet each student where they are.”

**Extracurricular Activities**

In addition to academics, Kearny offers students a variety of extracurricular activities, including music, dance, and flag football.

“We are using Beyond the Bars, a music program designed specifically for our middle school students,” Scott-Feggins said. “In the program, students learn to play guitars and keyboards, and they also use computers to produce music.”

They have also partnered with the Philadelphia Ballet, following their program throughout most of the school year. “At the end, we held a recital together with other participating schools.”

Kearny collaborates with the Wagner Institute of Science to support their science curriculum.

**Supporting the School Community**

Beyond academics and student wellness, Kearny is deeply committed to supporting the broader school community. Scott-Feggins highlighted several ongoing efforts to help meet families’ basic needs—from food and clothing to holiday support.

“We have partnered with Sharing Excess, a food donation program,” she explained. “They provide fresh fruits and vegetables that we pack and distribute to our families.”

Additionally, the school offers a clothing giveaway with gently used and new clothes available every Thursday. They also run a consistent Thanksgiving effort each year to support families during the holidays.

“At Kearny, we’ve worked hard to create an inclusive environment where students have endless opportunities and their families receive the support they need,” Scott-Feggins added.

Mixed-use project proposed for former Hanson’s site in Platt Park

Doug McKinnon plans to revamp the gateway to South Pearl Street’s shops and restaurants in Platt Park. The real estate investor, through his firm McKinnon & Associates, submitted redevelopment plans last week to the city of Denver for his 0.29-acre lot at 1301 S. Pearl St., located adjacent to the iconic South Pearl sign that welcomes visitors to the neighborhood.

The property formerly housed Hansons, a burger joint that closed in 2020 and was demolished within the past year. McKinnon purchased the lot for $2.9 million in cash last December.

His proposed three-story building aims to offer a mixed-use space. The ground-floor corner is intended for a restaurant, with additional retail spaces facing Pearl Street and residential units along Louisiana Avenue. The second and third floors are planned to include both residential and office spaces. The development would also feature underground parking. Local design firm OZ Architecture drew up the plans.

“Given the preliminary nature of the plan, it is a little premature for us to get too deep into specific details of the project,” McKinnon wrote in an email to BusinessDen.

McKinnon is the second owner to explore redevelopment of the site. Before his purchase, the property was owned by Greenwood Village-based Cadence Capital Investments. Cadence acquired the two-story building in September 2020 for $2.6 million and submitted plans to convert the existing structure into an office building. However, no work on the site ultimately took place.

Glenside teacher, author, and mother launches book and business to highlight passion for math

Glenside resident Shameeka Browne is a mother of five, business owner, and teacher who has recently added another accomplishment to her resume: author. Browne’s new book, *Queen of 24*, tells her personal story while also highlighting her passion for math.

She hopes that her book, along with her business called Math is All Around Us LLC, will help children and their parents gain a deeper understanding of math. Through her endeavors and business, Browne aspires to open a space for teachers who want to try out new activities to teach math to their students and see if the exercises work in the classroom.

“I see that there is a greater need for families to be empowered with how they can help their child with their math education,” she said. “The great thing about passion is it becomes contagious, but it just can’t be the passion, it also has to be the love for the young people that are sitting in front of you.”

Browne credits her love for math to one of her teachers at Wagner Middle School, Mr. Plummer, who is featured in the book as well. She plans to release five more books, with each focusing on the varying age groups of her five children—from preschool to college.

“I want to help families understand the roles that they have in their child’s math education,” she said. “It truly does start at home, and the math that your child sees from the time that they wake up in the morning to the time that they go to bed at night—we can take advantage of that.”

During the writing and creative process, Browne faced some challenges. Uncertainty about having enough money to publish, fear that her story was not worthy of being published, and a publisher terminating two weeks before she was to show the cover to her family and supporters left her with feelings of inadequacy.

“I’m a math person, and it’s ironic that I put myself in the same position that I tell my students not to do,” Browne said. “When they say they are not math people, I prove to them that they are. But on the flip side, I was telling myself that I wasn’t a writer because who could be both? I can be both.”

Browne was able to find someone who could adequately reflect the story she was telling—an illustrator, Philly native Reggie Byers, who also had done some artwork at Wagner Middle School.

“I look at the cover, and I want to cry,” Browne said. “What was different about this illustrator was that I did not send him any pictures other than a picture of myself during that time in middle school and my family. When I tell you I saw the cover and said, ‘This looks like me.’”

She managed to sell over 200 copies before the book was released to the public, a real feat for most first-time writers. The book is currently available at [www.mathisallaroundus.org](http://www.mathisallaroundus.org), and she continues to help the next generation find their love and passion for math as a math specialist and content lead in the Lower Merion School District.

“Her passion for math is omnipresent in much of what she does and sees,” said Jameelah Hairston, a Glenside resident. “She challenges you to see how math is everywhere and present in many everyday activities and tasks.”

Mumbai News: Railway Staff Return Purse With ₹10,360 To Passenger On Mumbai Central-Ahmedabad Shatabdi Express

Railway Staff Return Purse Containing Rs 10,360 to Passenger on Mumbai Central–Ahmedabad Shatabdi Express

Mumbai: The diligent staff aboard the Mumbai Central–Ahmedabad Shatabdi Express (Train No. 12009) recently returned a purse containing Rs 10,360 in cash to a passenger who had inadvertently left it behind on the train.

Passenger Leaves Purse Behind After Disembarking at Vadodara

According to Western Railway (WR), Parag Pithwa, 52, was travelling with his wife, Ritu Pithwa, 49, and their daughter Akshara from Borivali to Vadodara in the Vistadome coach (seats 1, 2, and 3). After disembarking at Vadodara, the family realized they had accidentally left behind Ritu Pithwa’s ladies’ purse.

Honest Staff Informs Train Superintendent Immediately

“The purse was discovered by a member of the catering staff while cleaning the coach after the passengers had alighted. Without delay, the staff informed Train Superintendent Mahesh Giri, who used a Hand Held Terminal (HHT) device to identify the passenger assigned to the seats. This allowed him to retrieve the registered contact information,” said an official.

Purse Returned With All Contents Intact

Upon being contacted, Parag Pithwa confirmed the loss and provided an accurate description of the purse and its contents — which included Rs 10,360 in cash, a pair of numbered spectacles, and other personal items.

As the family had already exited the station, Pithwa arranged for his brother, Hemantbhai, to collect the purse during the return journey of the Shatabdi Express. After verifying his identity, railway staff returned the purse with all its contents intact.

Family Expresses Gratitude for Staff’s Integrity

Parag Pithwa expressed heartfelt appreciation for the integrity and prompt action of the railway staff. “We are deeply thankful to the staff of the Shatabdi Express. Their honesty and quick response ensured we were reunited with our belongings,” he said.
