Igalia detail their open source work for Valve’s Steam Frame and Steam Machine

One of the great things about Valve’s hardware is that it’s not locked down, and they put a lot of money into open source for SteamOS (Linux). With the upcoming new Steam Machine and Steam Frame, the open source never stops. And here we have Igalia, one of the Free Software consultancies that Valve works with, writing up a post detailing some of the work that goes into it all. In this case, it’s especially interesting for the Steam Frame. Igalia have people working on FEX, as just one example, which is a fast usermode x86 and x86-64 emulator for Arm64 Linux. Basically, it allows running x86 applications on ARM64 Linux devices this is part of how the Steam Frame will actually run games. From the post: “If you love video games, like I do, working on FEX with Valve is a dream come true,” said Paulo Matos, an engineer with Igalia’s Compilers Team. Even so, the challenges can be daunting, because making sure the translation is working often requires manual QA rather than automated testing. “You have to start a game, sometimes the error shows up in the colors or sound, or how the game behaves when you break down the door in the second level. Just debugging this can take a while,” said Matos. “For optimization work I did early last year, I used a game called Psychonauts to test it. I must have played the first 3 to 4 minutes of the game many, many times for debugging. Looking at my history, Steam tells me I played it for 29 hours, but it was always the first few minutes, nothing else.” I imagine there’s a lot of driver development, and Proton / Wine development, that has people repeat sections over and over like this. Can’t imagine how boring that actually ends up. But, probably exciting when they finally nail it and get it all working nicely. The post from Igalia also confirms the Steam Frame will use the open source Mesa3D Turnip graphics driver, which needed a fair amount of work to be ready for the device by the sounds of it, with lots missing to get it up to scratch. “We implemented many Vulkan extensions and reviewed numerous others,” said Danylo Piliaiev, an engineer on the Graphics Team. “Over the years, we ensured that D3D11, D3D12, and OpenGL games rendered correctly through DXVK, vkd3d-proton, and Zink, investigating many rendering issues along the way. We achieved higher correctness than the proprietary driver and, in many cases, Mesa3D Turnip is faster as well.” Since it’s all open source, everyone benefits not just Valve. And, some of the work sounds quite exciting for the future of gaming on Linux. Looking ahead, Igalia’s work for Valve will continue to deliver benefits to the wider Linux Gaming ecosystem. For example, the Steam Frame, as a battery-powered VR headset, needs to deliver high performance within a limited power budget. A way to address this is to create a more efficient task scheduler, which is something Changwoo Min of Igalia’s Kernel Team has been working on. As he says, “I have been developing a customized CPU scheduler for gaming, named LAVD: Latency-criticality Aware Virtual Deadline scheduler.” Read more in the Igalia post. They also have multiple jobs open for programmers interested.

Cleveland ‘s Luis Ortiz to appear in court over allegations he took bribes to rig pitches

BOSTON (AP) — Cleveland Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz is due in court Monday on charges accusing him and teammate Emmanuel Clase of taking bribes to help bettors in their native Dominican Republic win prop bets placed on pitches they threw.

According to the indictment against the two, unsealed Sunday, the highly paid pitchers took several thousand dollars in payoffs to help two unnamed gamblers in their home country win at least $460,000 on bets placed on the speed and outcome of certain pitches, including some that landed in the dirt.

Clase, who was the Guardians’ closer, and Ortiz, a starter, have been on nondisciplinary paid leave since July, when MLB began investigating what it described as unusually high in-game betting activity when the two pitched. Some of the games in question took place in April, May, and June.

Ortiz, 26, was arrested Sunday by the FBI at Boston Logan International Airport. He is expected to appear in federal court in Boston on Monday. Clase, 27, is not in custody, officials said.

Ortiz and Clase “betrayed America’s pastime,” U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella Jr. said. “Integrity, honesty and fair play are part of the DNA of professional sports. When corruption infiltrates the sport, it brings disgrace not only to the participants but damages the public trust in an institution that is vital and dear to all of us.”

Ortiz’s lawyer, Chris Georgalis, said in a statement that his client is innocent and “has never, and would never, improperly influence a game not for anyone and not for anything.” Georgalis added that Ortiz’s defense team previously documented for prosecutors that the payments and money transfers between him and individuals in the Dominican Republic were for legal activities.

Major League Baseball said it contacted federal law enforcement when it began investigating unusual betting activity and has fully cooperated with authorities. “We are aware of the indictment and today’s arrest, and our investigation is ongoing,” a league statement said.

In a statement, the Guardians said: “We are aware of the recent law enforcement action. We will continue to fully cooperate with both law enforcement and Major League Baseball as their investigations continue.”

Clase and Ortiz are each charged with wire fraud conspiracy, honest services wire fraud conspiracy, money laundering conspiracy, and conspiracy to influence sporting contests by bribery. The top charges carry a potential punishment of up to 20 years in prison.

In one example cited in the indictment, Clase allegedly invited a bettor to a game against the Boston Red Sox in April and spoke with him by phone just before taking the mound. Four minutes later, the indictment said, the bettor and his associates won $11,000 on a wager that Clase would throw a certain pitch slower than 97.95 mph (157.63 kph).

Clase, a three-time All-Star and two-time American League Reliever of the Year, had a $4.5 million salary in 2025—the fourth season of a $20 million, five-year contract. The three-time AL save leader began providing the bettors with information about his pitches in 2023 but did not ask for payoffs until this year, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said Ortiz, who earned a $782,600 salary this year, joined the scheme in June and is accused of rigging pitches in games against the Seattle Mariners and the St. Louis Cardinals.

These charges are the latest bombshell developments in a federal crackdown on gambling in professional sports. Last month, more than 30 people, including prominent basketball figures such as Portland Trail Blazers head coach and Basketball Hall of Famer Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, were arrested in a gambling sweep that rocked the NBA.

After 46 Fires, Ford Issues Urgent Recall And Stop Sale Order

Ford’s recall machine has been unusually quiet in recent weeks, but it’s now back to its usual pace with the 115th campaign of the year. This latest round covers 59,006 vehicles that can short circuit and potentially catch fire.

### Affected Vehicles

The recall impacts an assortment of different models, including the 2021-2024 Bronco and Bronco Sport, as well as the 2020-2022 Escape and 2022-2024 Maverick. They’re also joined by the 2019-2020 Fusion, 2019-2024 Ranger, and some 2016-2018 and 2020-2023 Explorers.

Since this is a family affair, the company is also recalling the 2020-2022 Lincoln Corsair and 2016-2019 MKC.

### What’s Causing The Fire Risk?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) explains that the vehicles may be equipped with an engine block heater that can leak coolant through its element pins. This issue increases the risk of an underhood fire, especially when the engine block heater is plugged into a non-GFCI outlet.

Digging deeper, the government says the heater’s solder joints may crack around the element base, allowing coolant to infiltrate into the block heater to cord interface. When the coolant evaporates, it leaves behind electrically conductive salt deposits.

These deposits accumulate over time and can eventually corrode electrical connections or form a “salt bridge.” If this happens, a resistive short circuit could occur.

Engine block heaters are relatively rare in non-diesel vehicles in the United States, and it’s believed that only 1% of the recalled vehicles have the defect.

### Signs To Watch For

Customers may notice problems if they see coolant spots on their driveway or in their garage. Other symptoms include:

– Overheating
– Loss of cabin heat
– Low coolant warning
– Smoke coming from the block heater wiring

### The Investigation

Ford became aware of the issue in January following a number of fires. They began investigating and quickly discovered that coolant could seep into the cord pocket, potentially leading to a short circuit when energized with 110V power.

As part of the investigation, Ford performed X-rays and CT scans on faulty components, which showed solder voids and cracks within the solder joint. However, the root cause of these issues was never determined.

As of September, Ford was aware of 46 vehicles that reportedly caught on fire. The automaker also received six customer complaints, 30 legal claims, and 21 reports from Transport Canada.

Given the prevalence of engine block heaters in Canada, it’s not surprising that most of the issues occurred there.

### Current Actions and Recommendations

The recall has resulted in a stop sale order. Existing owners are advised **not to use their engine block heater until it has been replaced**.

Unfortunately, this replacement is not expected to be available until February 2026, which means that the remedy will arrive close to the end of winter.

Ford owners affected by this recall should stay alert to any warning signs and follow official guidance to ensure safety until the fix is implemented.

Four shot dead during homecoming weekend in Mississippi town

Four people were killed in a shooting in the Mississippi Delta region following a high school football homecoming game, Mississippi state Sen. Derrick Simmons told The Associated Press. The incident occurred in the downtown area of the small town of Leland, Mississippi, where people had gathered after the game. Simmons, who represents the area, confirmed the information based on updates received from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement authorities involved in the investigation.

In addition to the four fatalities, four other victims were hospitalized in Greenville and later flown to a larger medical facility in the state capital, Jackson.

Authorities are currently seeking an 18-year-old man for questioning in connection with the shooting, according to a statement from the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff has urged anyone with information to contact the local police chief or sheriff’s office.

The shooting took place on the school campus during the Heidelberg Oilers’ homecoming football game on Friday night. However, it remains unclear exactly when the gunfire occurred or how close it was to the stadium.

Sheriff White, who was at the scene investigating on Saturday, stated, “Right now we’ve still got a subject at large, but I can’t give specifics.” He added that more information may be released in the coming days.

Leland is a small town of about 640 residents, located approximately 85 miles (137 kilometers) southeast of Jackson, the state capital.
