Zohran Mamdani’s Chances Of Becoming NYC Mayor Appear To Hinge On One Thing, Wildly Different Polls Show

Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani’s chances of beating independent candidate Andrew Cuomo in New York City’s mayoral race appear to be strongly correlated with the level of support for longshot Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa, according to a spate of recent polling.

Two polls released Thursday show that Mamdani, a self-avowed socialist, enjoys wide leads over Cuomo, the former Democratic Governor of New York, and Sliwa in the city’s mayoral race. On the other hand, a Suffolk University poll released on Monday, in which Sliwa polled lower than in the two more recent polls, found that Mamdani’s lead over Cuomo was only 10 points.

An Emerson College Polling/PIX11/The Hill survey released Thursday found that Mamdani secured a 25-point lead over Cuomo, 50% to 25%, while 21% of voters backed Sliwa and 4% were undecided. Compared to a separate Emerson College poll released on September 10, support for Mamdani in the mayoral election rose by seven percentage points, from 43% to 50%.

“Mamdani appears to have built a coalition across key demographics, increasing his margin among Black voters since last month, from 50% to 71%, whereas Cuomo dropped ten points among Black voters since September,” Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, said in a statement.

“Mamdani continues to have a base of young voters; 69% of voters under 50 support him, whereas 37% of voters over 50 support Mamdani, while 31% support Cuomo and 28% support Sliwa,” Kimball added.

Meanwhile, a Marist University poll published Thursday showed Mamdani leading with 48% support, Cuomo gaining 32% of the vote, Sliwa receiving 16% support, and 3% undecided.

Sliwa has reportedly been facing increasing pressure from some Republicans to drop out of the New York City mayoral race in an effort to improve Cuomo’s chances of beating Mamdani in the election. However, Sliwa has doubled down on his plans to stay in the race until Election Day. In an October 20 interview with Fox Across America, he said he would rather be “impaled” than drop his mayoral bid.

If Sliwa were to drop out of the contest, Mamdani would lead by only six points, receiving the backing of 51% of likely voters compared with 44% for Cuomo, according to the Marist poll. Moreover, 2% of voters said they would vote for someone else, and 3% were undecided.

“My message to your readers is that a vote for Curtis Sliwa is a vote for Zohran Mamdani,” Rich Azzopardi, a spokesperson for Cuomo’s campaign, told the Daily Caller News Foundation (DCNF) in an emailed statement. “For weeks this has been a tightening race with early voting showing a surge of older voters—the exact inverse of the primary—and turnout on track for between 1.9 and 2 million. With those dynamics, every poll out there is essentially meaningless from this point out.”

David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center, said in a statement on Monday, when Suffolk’s poll was released, that he thinks Sliwa could have “an outsized impact” on the outcome of the Big Apple’s upcoming mayoral election.

“There is one person in New York City whose voters could have an outsized impact on the outcome. That person isn’t Mayor Eric Adams, Representative Hakeem Jeffries, Senator Chuck Schumer, or any New York billionaire. It’s Republican Curtis Sliwa,” Paleologos said.

“And when asked for their second choice, those voters preferred Cuomo over Mamdani 36% to 2%.”

Mamdani previously called for the New York City Police Department to be defunded, referring to the department as “racist, anti-queer and a major threat to public safety.” Though, the Democratic socialist has since downplayed some of his previous anti-police rhetoric.

President Donald Trump notably told reporters on October 22 that if Sliwa dropped out of the Big Apple’s mayoral race, “maybe Cuomo would have a little bit of a chance, but not much.”

“He’s [Sliwa] not going to win and [it’s] not looking too good for Cuomo either,” Trump added during his comments to reporters.

Cuomo claimed on October 17 that Sliwa “cannot win,” adding that if “you vote for Curtis, save yourself the time, and vote for Mamdani,” The New York Times reported.

Additionally, Cuomo suggested to SiriusXM host Stephen A. Smith during a Wednesday interview on “Straight Shooter with Stephen A.” that if Mamdani is victorious in New York City’s November 4 general election, it would be “the death of the Democratic Party.”

The Emerson College poll was conducted October 25 to October 27. The overall sample of NYC very likely voters/those who have already voted (n=640) has a credibility interval, similar to a survey’s margin of error, of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.

The Marist University survey of 1,134 New York City adults was conducted October 24 to October 28. Results for all adults (n=1,134) are statistically significant within plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

Laugh Factory manager arrested in front of mother outside Chicago comedy club by federal agents

A manager at the Laugh Factory in Chicago was arrested for allegedly obstructing a federal immigration operation, but his mother claims agents “kidnapped” him right before her eyes.

According to the Chicago Police Department, officers responded to a call about a battery in progress outside the club at around 9:20 a.m. on Friday. Upon arrival, they found federal agents involved in a physical altercation with two individuals, NBC Chicago reported.

A viral video of the encounter shows federal agents taking night manager Nathan Griffin to the ground and placing him under arrest as onlookers scream at the agents to stop amid the chaotic scene. The footage captures a physical struggle involving Griffin, his mother Elaine Plybon, and the agents.

Bystanders yelled, “Why are you doing this? Where are you taking him?” as Griffin was lifted off the ground and led into a car. Another person shouted, “Let us see your face.”

Witness Will Kolic, who works nearby and knows the manager, told NBC Chicago he saw multiple cars pull up and men grab a man who appeared to be Hispanic. Kolic said agents then “jumped out of their car” and snatched the Laugh Factory’s manager while he was standing with his mother. At one point, agents were also seen restraining Griffin’s mother on the ground.

A Border Patrol spokesperson told NBC Chicago that Griffin was detained after he “attempted to impede and obstruct federal officers.” They also claimed he tried to shut the door of the federal agents’ car on an agent’s leg.

“The individual was immediately detained and turned over to the FBI for investigation,” the spokesperson added.

Griffin’s mother expressed her distress in a video posted on Instagram, saying her son was “kidnapped by Border Patrol in front of my eyes.”

“For those of you who don’t know, I was in Chicago visiting my son, and he was kidnapped by Border Patrol in front of my eyes,” Plybon said. “When I think about going out the door in the morning, I don’t want to. Because I do not want to encounter the SUV, the screams, the crying, and the horrific things that I saw before I was pulled into the fray when somebody tried to kidnap my son.”

In response to the incident, Griffin’s brother-in-law and mother launched a GoFundMe campaign to help raise legal funds.

“My brother-in-law Nathan was detained by border patrol officers today in Chicago, despite the fact that he is a natural-born American citizen,” Tom Pinney wrote on the fundraising page. “After being arrested and hidden throughout the system, he finally resurfaced about 4 hours after his detainment in FBI custody awaiting a hearing for a federal assault charge which could carry 8 years in prison if convicted.”

Since its creation on Saturday, the GoFundMe has raised more than $20,000.

“The amazing outpouring of support is reminding us of the America we love. We cannot thank you enough!” Plybon wrote in an update on the fundraising page.

Delta flight from MSP aborts takeoff after flames shoot out of engine

A Delta Airlines flight was forced to abort takeoff Thursday afternoon at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport after a mechanical failure caused flames to shoot out of the right engine.

The plane, which was headed to Portland, Oregon, returned from the runway to the gate, according to Delta spokesperson Bre’onna Richardson.

Passengers from flight 1661 were rebooked onto another plane and arrived in Portland two hours later than scheduled, Richardson said in a prepared statement. “We apologize to our customers for their delay in travel,” she added.

“ABC World News Tonight” aired video footage Friday showing the plane on the runway at MSP, with flames visibly coming from under the right wing.

Some lawmakers demand salaries withheld until federal workers get paid

WASHINGTON — Some members of Congress are requesting that their salaries be withheld during the ongoing government shutdown, while federal workers on Friday missed their first full paycheck since many operations closed on October 1.

With no progress toward a deal to end the shutdown, the House remained on a prolonged break from Capitol Hill, the Senate adjourned for its usual long weekend, and President Donald Trump prepared to depart for a trip to China. During this trip, the president is expected to focus more on foreign policy and tariffs than on the funding lapse.

**Lawmakers Continue to Receive Paychecks**

Unlike the approximately 2 million civilian federal employees and thousands of legislative branch staffers affected by the shutdown, the president, members of Congress, and federal judges continue to receive their regular paychecks.

Members of Congress earn $174,000 annually, with leadership earning higher salaries. Active duty military personnel would normally miss their paychecks during a shutdown, but the Department of Defense recently reprogrammed $8 billion to avoid missed paydays for U.S. troops. It remains unclear if the Pentagon can extend this funding through the next payday on October 31.

**Options for Congressional Pay During Shutdown**

Members of Congress have several options during this shutdown: they may receive their pay as usual, donate their salaries to charity, return the money to the Treasury, or choose to have their checks withheld.

On Thursday evening, Rhode Island Democratic Rep. Gabe Amo shared a letter from House Chief Administrative Officer Catherine L. Szpindor confirming that House members’ salaries can be withheld until the funding lapse ends. Szpindor stated that legal requirements, including the 27th Amendment, entitle members to their pay, and any lawmaker whose salary is withheld can request payment at any time. Szpindor did not respond to requests for further comment.

A spokesperson for Ohio Republican Sen. Jon Husted confirmed that, although senators are required to be paid, his paycheck can be withheld at his request. The Senate disbursing office will continue to prepare the check, but Husted will not collect it until after government funding is restored. The spokesperson added that Husted believes members of Congress should not receive their salaries on time when other federal workers do not.

In another instance, a Senate staffer, speaking on background, reported that one senator’s salary was switched from direct deposit to a physical paycheck so it could be held by the disbursing office during the shutdown, at that senator’s request.

Among members who have requested their salaries to be withheld are Colorado Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet, Florida Republican Rep. Kat Cammack, New Jersey Democratic Sen. Andy Kim, Oklahoma Republican Rep. Stephanie Bice, and Oregon Democratic Rep. Janelle Bynum.

Spokespersons for President Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., did not respond to inquiries about whether they are having their salaries withheld. A spokesperson for Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., stated that he is having his paycheck held back.

**Legal Considerations Regarding Lawmakers’ Salaries**

Congress has voted on several occasions to officially withhold members’ salaries during shutdowns, but none of these bills have become law.

Questions have arisen in past funding lapses about the legality of withholding lawmakers’ pay. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) wrote in a letter to Iowa Republican Sen. Joni Ernst shortly before the shutdown began that member pay “is required by the Constitution and is considered mandatory spending.”

“Thus, Members of Congress would continue to be paid during a lapse in discretionary appropriations,” wrote CBO Director Phillip L. Swagel.

This aligns with a report from the Congressional Research Service (CRS), also nonpartisan and updated in August, which states that “Members of Congress continue to receive their pay during a lapse in appropriations for a number of reasons.”

According to the CRS report, lawmaker salaries “have been provided by a permanent, mandatory, appropriation since 1981.”

The U.S. Constitution (Article I, Section 6, Clause 1) states: “Senators and Representatives shall receive a Compensation for their Services, to be ascertained by Law, and paid out of the Treasury of the United States.”

Additionally, the 27th Amendment declares: “No law, varying the compensation for the services of the Senators and Representatives, shall take effect, until an election of Representatives shall have intervened.”

The CRS report also cites the Government Accountability Office’s principles of federal appropriations law, noting that “The salary of a Member of Congress is fixed by statute and therefore cannot be waived without specific statutory authority.”

However, the report points out that lawmakers can accept their salary and subsequently donate all or part of it back to the Treasury.

**No Options and No Paychecks for Federal Employees**

Federal employees who work for members of Congress or within departments and agencies across the executive branch do not have the option to withhold their paychecks.

These workers must go without pay until Congress and the president reach an agreement to fund the government and end the shutdown.

Any employee involved in national security, or the protection of life or property, is considered exempt and continues working during the shutdown. Other federal employees are placed on furlough.

On Thursday, the Senate failed to advance multiple bills that would have provided pay to some federal employees and contractors during the shutdown.

Absent new congressional action, both exempt and non-exempt federal workers are slated to receive back pay under a 2019 law once the government reopens. However, President Trump and administration officials have cast doubt on whether executive branch employees will receive such back pay.

The House Committee on Administration states that all employees working within the legislative branch will receive back pay once a funding bill becomes law.

The committee’s guidance explains: “Neither essential nor furloughed employees are authorized to receive compensation during a lapse in government funding.”

“Federal law statutorily requires retroactive pay for furloughed and essential employees following the end of a lapse in government funding,” it adds.

Truck driver shot by law enforcement after backing into Coast Guard base

Coast Guard security personnel “issued multiple verbal commands to stop the vehicle, [but] the driver failed to comply and proceeded to put the vehicle in reverse, suddenly accelerating backwards at a high rate of speed directly toward them,” according to a statement.

“When the vehicle’s actions posed a direct threat to the safety of Coast Guard and security personnel, law enforcement officers discharged several rounds of defensive live fire,” the statement continued.

“No Coast Guard personnel were injured during the incident. Two civilians were injured and are expected to survive. The truck driver was wounded in the stomach and is being held for mental health evaluation. A bystander was struck by a fragment, treated at a local hospital, and released,” the statement said.

The DHS X account attached a video of the incident, showing the vehicle backing up at high speed toward a line of officers who riddled it with fire, causing the driver to stop and speed off in the opposite direction.

The FBI is leading the investigation into the incident, sending evidence, crisis management, and bomb technician teams to the site of the crime.

“At this time, the incident appears to be isolated, and there is no known current threat to the public,” FBI spokesperson Cameron Polan in San Francisco said in a statement.

U-Haul spokesman Jeff Lockridge said the company cooperated with law enforcement in the investigation.

The incident occurred on Wednesday after an anonymous source with knowledge of the situation told the San Francisco Chronicle that 100 U.S. Customs and Border Protection and other agents would begin arriving at the Alameda Coast Guard base on Thursday. The Coast Guard confirmed this in a statement provided to the media.

The news immediately drew outrage from San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie and Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA). Protesters gathered earlier on Thursday to demonstrate outside the checkpoint guarding the island. The protests were largely peaceful, with the attempted truck ramming occurring hours after most of the protesters had dispersed.

In an unexpected move, President Donald Trump called off the deployment of the federal agents after a phone call with Mayor Lurie, who was supported by personal appeals from several mutual connections.

However, in a Friday press conference, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem suggested that Trump could change his mind following the attempted ramming.

“If leaders in San Francisco don’t figure out how to protect our law enforcement officers and protect our Coast Guard members, then we would be forced to come in and protect those individuals,” she said.

BJP hits back, says Rahul has become a flag-bearer of anti-India forces abroad

**BJP Launches Scathing Attack on Rahul Gandhi Over Remarks in Colombia**

NEW DELHI: The BJP on Friday launched a sharp attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his remarks made at a seminar in Colombia, alleging that he has become the flag-bearer of anti-India forces and is promoting their agenda within the country.

Party spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi criticised Gandhi’s comments, stating that they reflect how the Congress party, controlled by the Nehru-Gandhi family for over a century, is now succumbing to anti-India elements.

Referring to Gandhi’s statement about India having 1,617 languages, Trivedi said, “You will now see that he will try to create a conflict over the issue of languages. Attempts have already been made in the past to create a North-South conflict.”

Trivedi went on to label Gandhi the *jhanda bardar* (flag-bearer) of anti-India forces and urged the public to be wary of him and the Nehru-Gandhi family. “Today, it seems that having a leader of the opposition like him is like a thorn in the heart of Indian democracy,” he remarked.

He further added, “Those in the Congress who are aware of the party falling into the clutches of dangerous foreign forces are committing treason. I appeal to those who are not aware of this to show due diligence and stop such leaders.”

Trivedi also criticised the Congress leadership as immature, contrasting it with earlier times when the party had mature leaders like Indira Gandhi and P. V. Narasimha Rao, who knew how to handle the Ultra-Left. “Today, it is being used. It’s not just a problem for the Congress but a matter of concern for the country as well,” he said.

In addition, Trivedi targeted Congress leader Udit Raj, who allegedly referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a symbol of the modern-day Ravan. He stated, “I only want to remind those who supported the killers of Rambhakt karsevaks, who did not attend the inauguration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya but visited Babar’s memorial three times to pay their obeisance.”

He added, “People know very well who the symbols of Ravan’s propensity against Lord Ram’s sanskar are.”

Reliance begins talks with banks for Jio IPO

**Reliance Begins Talks with Banks for Jio IPO**

*By Akash Pandey | Oct 03, 2025, 06:43 PM*

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has initiated informal discussions with banks regarding a potential initial public offering (IPO) of its subsidiary, Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, according to Bloomberg. This move could set a new benchmark by becoming India’s largest-ever IPO.

A formal process for the IPO is expected to commence by the end of this month, with RIL likely to officially appoint investment bankers in November.

**Financial Prospects**

Reliance plans to sell only 5% of Jio during the IPO, which could raise more than $6 billion. This figure would significantly surpass the previous record of $3.3 billion raised by Hyundai Motor India Ltd.’s IPO in 2024.

Mukesh Ambani, billionaire chairman of RIL, had earlier indicated that the Jio listing might occur in the first half of 2026.

**About Jio**

Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited is India’s largest wireless carrier, boasting approximately 500 million subscribers. The ongoing discussions about the IPO are still in the early stages, and details such as the size and timing of the offering may change.

A spokesperson for Reliance has not yet commented on these developments.
