West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee Slams DVC Over Release Of 1.5 Lakh Cusecs Of Water

**Kolkata:** Amid heavy rainfall in West Bengal, the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) on Friday released additional water from its reservoirs due to rains in Jharkhand. This move has sparked strong criticism from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who accused the DVC of releasing water without obtaining permission from the state government.

Taking to social media platform X, Mamata Banerjee expressed her outrage, stating, “The latest update on the unilateral and wilful release of water by DVC is that they have by the evening today released more than 150,000 cusecs of water from Maithon and Panchet dams etc to flood our West Bengal during festival times. This is a deliberate ploy to unleash disaster on us in order to inflict pains on millions when they are still busy in the Pujas. Shameful, intolerable, unacceptable! We protest!!”

Earlier the same day, the Chief Minister had highlighted the issue on X, saying, “Bijoya Dashami marks the close of Durga Puja — a time for joy, cheer and renewed hope. Yet instead of allowing the people of West Bengal to conclude the festival in peace, the DVC released 65,000 cusecs of water without any prior notice to the State. This reckless act is nothing short of an attempt to inflict misery during our sacred festivities. Such unilateral action is shameful and absolutely unacceptable.”

She further added, “By releasing water without intimation, the DVC has placed millions of lives in Bengal in immediate peril. This is not a natural calamity, it is a disaster manufactured by the DVC. Let me be clear: I will not allow anyone to carry out a Bisarjan of Bengal. Every conspiracy against our people will be resisted with full force. Truth will prevail over deceit and good will triumph over evil. Joy Maa Durga!”

Notably, Mamata Banerjee has accused the DVC multiple times in the past of releasing water without prior permission. The DVC has usually responded to such allegations; however, until the time of reporting this incident, the corporation had not issued any statement regarding the recent water release.

Karwa Chauth rituals explained: From sargi to moonrise puja

**Karwa Chauth Rituals Explained: From Sargi to Moonrise Puja**
*By Anujj Trehaan | Oct 03, 2025, 06:22 pm*

Karwa Chauth is one of the most cherished festivals for married women in India, celebrated with devotion, love, and togetherness. Observed on the fourth day after Sharad Purnima, women fast from sunrise to moonrise for the well-being and longevity of their husbands. With unique rituals that blend tradition and symbolism, Karwa Chauth beautifully reflects cultural heritage, family bonding, and timeless expressions of commitment and love.

### 1. Sargi Before Sunrise
The rituals begin early in the morning with **sargi**, a pre-dawn meal lovingly prepared by mothers-in-law for their daughters-in-law. This meal usually includes fruits, sweets, dry fruits, parathas, and refreshing drinks to provide nourishment for the long day ahead.

Eating sargi before sunrise is significant as it symbolizes blessings and maternal care, ensuring women have the energy to sustain the demanding fast.

### 2. The Daylong Fast
After sargi, women commence their **nirjala fast**, abstaining from both food and water until moonrise. This fast is observed with prayers and devotion focused on their husband’s well-being and prosperity.

During the day, women engage in light household activities, dress in festive attire, and sometimes gather with other women to share stories or prepare for the evening rituals.

### 3. Karwa Chauth Puja
In the evening, women come together with decorated thalis containing diyas (lamps), sweets, sindoor (vermilion), and a small karwa (clay pot). The puja is usually performed in groups, guided by an elder or a priest.

Stories about Karwa Chauth’s origins and significance are narrated while women pass their thalis in a circle, chanting prayers. This ritual strengthens community bonds and shared devotion.

### 4. Waiting for the Moonrise
After the puja, women eagerly await the moonrise—the most anticipated moment of the day. Families gather on rooftops or in open spaces.

Women hold decorated sieves or water vessels, looking toward the moon before turning their gaze to their husbands. This act symbolizes filtering out hardships, seeking blessings, and celebrating love. The moment is both emotional and deeply symbolic.

### 5. Breaking the Fast
Once the moon is sighted, husbands offer their wives the first sip of water and a morsel of food, marking the end of the fast. Families then share a celebratory meal featuring festive dishes specially prepared for the occasion.

Breaking the fast transforms the spiritual discipline into a joyful celebration of marriage, unity, and cherished relationships.

Karwa Chauth continues to be a powerful expression of love, dedication, and cultural tradition, bringing families closer and honoring the enduring bond between husband and wife.

Mumbai News: CM Devendra Fadnavis Launches Cyber Awareness Month, Urges Citizens To Report Frauds Within ‘Golden Hour’

**Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis Stresses Timely Reporting of Cyber Frauds During “Cyber Awareness Month – October 2025″**

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday emphasized that timely reporting of cyber frauds is as crucial as saving accident victims during the “Golden Hour.” He urged citizens to immediately lodge complaints through helplines 1930 or 1945 to increase the chances of recovering stolen money.

The CM was speaking at the inauguration of **“Cyber Awareness Month – October 2025”** held at the Maharashtra Police Headquarters in Mumbai. The event witnessed the presence of DGP Rashmi Shukla, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Iqbal Singh Chahal, Bollywood actors Akshay Kumar and Rani Mukherjee, Dr. Farooq Kazi of VJTI, Prof. Manjesh Hanwal of IIT Mumbai, and senior police officials.

### Cybercrime: The Biggest Challenge of the Digital Age

Fadnavis highlighted that cybercrime is one of the biggest threats of the digital era, stressing that prevention is as important as punishment. He cautioned against the growing misuse of AI technologies such as phishing, OTP fraud, deepfakes, voice and face cloning.

“Every online transaction, social media activity, or acceptance of cookies carries the risk of data misuse, which can lead to extortion, cyberbullying, and fraud,” he warned.

### Technology: Both a Threat and a Solution

Highlighting Maharashtra’s investment in world-class cyber labs and response centres, Fadnavis underlined the importance of swift complaint registration.

“Technology itself is a threat, but technology alone is also the solution. Every digital crime leaves behind a digital fingerprint,” he said.

He also raised concern about cyberspace being used to spread propaganda. “Cyberspace not only connects people; it can hack your mind. The new danger is planting anarchist ideas in a very personalised way,” he added, referring to the emerging threat of “urban Maoism.”

### Need for Cyber Awareness in Schools

Fadnavis underlined the significant roles of parents, teachers, and communicators in educating youth about digital safety. He suggested including cyber security in school curriculums as a “revolutionary step” toward building a safer digital future.

### Akshay Kumar Shares Personal Experience

Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar shared a personal incident involving his family. He revealed that his daughter once received inappropriate messages from a stranger while playing an online game.

“Thankfully, she reported it to her mother immediately. But such incidents don’t always get reported. Cyber security should be taught in schools just like history and mathematics,” he stated passionately.

With cyber threats evolving rapidly, Maharashtra’s initiative to raise awareness and improve reporting mechanisms aims to safeguard citizens in the digital age. Citizens are encouraged to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities through the dedicated helplines promptly.

Mumbai News: BMC Appoints Full-Time Ward Officers In Dongri, Marine Lines, Parel And Kandivali After Long Delay

**Mumbai: Four Administrative Wards Get Full-Time Ward Officers After Long Wait**

After a prolonged wait, four out of eight administrative wards in Mumbai will finally have full-time ward officers. On Friday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) administration appointed new ward officials—also known as Assistant Municipal Commissioners (AMCs)—in B (Dongri), C (Marine Lines), F South (Parel), and R South (Kandivali) wards.

These appointments were made based on recommendations from the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) following exams conducted to fill vacant AMC posts. Until now, these wards were managed by acting ward officials, mostly senior engineers, who lacked formal administrative training.

### Recruitment Process Delayed by Legal Challenges

The recruitment process for 14 ward officer posts was announced by the BMC in June 2021. After the exams and document verification, the final list of candidates was prepared. However, the process was stalled for over two years due to legal petitions filed by disqualified candidates.

The Supreme Court eventually allowed the BMC to proceed with appointing shortlisted candidates. Despite this directive, delays continued, leading to a contempt petition against the BMC. Finally, the MPSC released the final list, appointment letters were issued in November 2024, and training for the new officers was completed last month.

Meanwhile, senior engineers continued to fill the roles in an acting capacity without formal administrative training, raising concerns about delays and weakened oversight in ward administration.

### New Appointments and Transfers

On Friday, the BMC issued a series of administrative orders appointing the following officials as AMCs:

– Yogesh Desai as AMC of B Ward
– Santosh Salunkhe as AMC of C Ward
– Vrushali Ingule as AMC of F South Ward
– Aarti Golekar as AMC of R South Ward

Sanjay Ingle, previously serving as the Executive Engineer and acting in charge of C Ward, and Manish Salve, acting in charge of R South Ward, were relieved of their duties and sent back to the City Engineer Department.

Additionally, the civic authorities issued transfer orders for three AMCs:

– Nitin Shukla transferred from B Ward to K East Ward (Jogeshwari, Andheri East)
– Mahesh Patil transferred from F South to S Ward (Bhandup)
– Alka Sasane, AMC of S Ward, transferred to the Market Department

### Remaining Posts to be Filled Soon

A senior civic official stated, “Of the remaining four candidates, one has yet to be relieved from their previous posting, while another is currently on maternity leave. The other two are undergoing training and will be appointed as AMCs upon completion.”

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has initiated informal discussions with banks regarding a potential initial public offering (IPO) of its subsidiary, Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, according to Bloomberg. This move could set a new benchmark by becoming India’s largest-ever IPO.

A formal process for the IPO is expected to commence by the end of this month, with RIL likely to officially appoint investment bankers in November.

**Financial Prospects**

Reliance plans to sell only 5% of Jio during the IPO, which could raise more than $6 billion. This figure would significantly surpass the previous record of $3.3 billion raised by Hyundai Motor India Ltd.’s IPO in 2024.

Mukesh Ambani, billionaire chairman of RIL, had earlier indicated that the Jio listing might occur in the first half of 2026.

**About Jio**

Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited is India’s largest wireless carrier, boasting approximately 500 million subscribers. The ongoing discussions about the IPO are still in the early stages, and details such as the size and timing of the offering may change.
