Tamil Nadu cancels licence of Sresan Pharmaceuticals, shuts down company

The Tamil Nadu state health department has confirmed the shutdown of Sresan Pharmaceuticals following an investigation that revealed the presence of toxic contaminants, specifically Diethylene Glycol (DEG), in their product Coldrif syrup. This development comes after multiple deaths have been linked to the consumption of the adulterated medicine.

In response to the findings, the health department has ordered comprehensive inspections across all pharmaceutical manufacturing units throughout Tamil Nadu. Large-scale inspections are currently underway to ensure compliance with safety standards, ANI reported.

On October 9, the owner of Sresan Pharmaceuticals, Ranganathan, was arrested in Chennai by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) from Madhya Pradesh. He has been remanded in 10-day police custody by a Parasia court. Additionally, two senior drug inspectors have been suspended due to dereliction of duty, as reported by ANI.

The Tamil Nadu government has reiterated its directive for thorough inspections of all pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities in the state to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader K Annamalai criticized the Tamil Nadu government’s handling of the crisis. He highlighted that despite the deaths of 23 people in Madhya Pradesh and three children in Rajasthan linked to the toxic Coldrif syrup, only two drug inspectors had been suspended. Annamalai accused the state government of attempting to shirk responsibility.

“A drug manufactured by a private pharmaceutical company in Kanchipuram has reportedly caused multiple deaths, yet the Tamil Nadu government is trying to create an illusion of having no connection or accountability,” he said. He also underscored the company’s history of quality violations and the apparent lack of proper inspections by state drug authorities.

Meanwhile, the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has issued a directive to all states and Union Territories to ensure strict compliance with the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945. This includes mandatory testing of raw materials and finished pharmaceutical products before approval.

Earlier, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted searches at seven locations in Chennai linked to the Sresan Pharmaceuticals case, addressing money laundering charges connected to the Coldrif syrup deaths. Multiple ED teams from the Chennai Zonal Office carried out simultaneous raids based on specific intelligence inputs.

According to officials, searches are ongoing at premises including the residences of senior officials from the Tamil Nadu Drug Control Office. The agency is investigating financial transactions and suspected proceeds of crime related to the production and distribution of the adulterated medicine.

The deaths caused by toxic cough syrups have raised national concern and prompted swift regulatory actions. Following these events, the Delhi government banned the sale, purchase, and distribution of Coldrif syrup after declaring it “not of standard quality,” according to an official order dated October 10.

The order stated:
“Coldrif Syrup (Paracetamol, Phenylephrine Hydrochloride, Chlorpheniramine Maleate Syrup), manufactured in May 2025 by Sresan Pharmaceuticals in Tamil Nadu, was found to contain Diethylene Glycol (46.28% w/v), a toxic chemical known to be hazardous to human health.”

All stakeholders were directed to immediately halt the sale, purchase, and distribution of the affected batch. The public has been strongly advised against consuming the product due to its potential health risks.

This incident underscores the critical importance of stringent quality control and regulatory oversight within the pharmaceutical industry to safeguard public health.

Indian government may amend Companies Act to boost local auditors

**Indian Government May Amend Companies Act to Boost Local Auditors**
*By Mudit Dube | Oct 13, 2025, 02:41 PM*

The Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) is considering significant amendments to the Companies Act aimed at strengthening the position of domestic audit firms. This initiative is part of a broader effort to help Indian auditors compete more effectively with global giants such as Deloitte, PwC, EY, and KPMG. The proposed changes are expected to be introduced through the Companies Act Amendment Bill.

**Relaxing Partner Composition Norms**

One of the key proposals under consideration is the relaxation of partner composition norms for audit firms. Currently, Section 141(1) of the Companies Act mandates that a majority of partners practicing in India within an audit firm must be chartered accountants. The amendment seeks to modify this requirement to offer greater flexibility and encourage the growth of local firms.

**Tender Reforms to Increase Domestic Participation**

Apart from legislative changes, the government is also evaluating reforms in tender norms related to government audits. At present, large-value government audit contracts are predominantly won by international audit firms. To boost opportunities for Indian firms, the government plans to make participation of domestic auditors mandatory in government tenders and adjust eligibility criteria to widen the bidder base.

**Role of ICAI and Regulatory Alignment**

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has been engaged to help align regulatory frameworks with global best practices. As part of this collaboration, ICAI is finalizing a digital platform to facilitate mergers among CA firms, aiming to strengthen the domestic audit sector. These regulatory enhancements are expected to roll out in the coming months alongside the legislative changes.

**Proposed Amendments to Conflict-of-Interest Provisions**

In addition to partner composition reforms, amendments to Section 144 of the Companies Act are also being considered. Section 144 governs conflict-of-interest provisions, and the proposed changes intend to ensure the regulatory environment evolves in line with new business models in auditing and advisory services.

**Towards a Level Playing Field**

Collectively, these proposed amendments and policy initiatives are designed to create a more level playing field for Indian audit firms by enhancing their capacity to compete against international counterparts. The government’s focus on strengthening domestic capabilities signals a strategic move to nurture local talent and increase indigenous participation in the critical audit segment.

US Denounces China’s Detention Of Leaders Of Zion Church

**Washington DC: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio Condemns China’s Detention of Zion Church Leaders**

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Sunday condemned China’s detention of several leaders of Zion Church, an underground Christian congregation in China. The United States called for their immediate release.

In a post on X, Rubio stated, “The United States condemns the Chinese Communist Party’s recent detention of dozens of leaders of the unregistered Zion Church in China, including prominent pastor Mingri ‘Ezra’ Jin. We call for their immediate release.”

According to Pastor Jin’s family and members of the church, Chinese authorities have detained the pastor of one of the country’s most prominent underground churches along with dozens of other affiliates. This has raised concerns about a renewed crackdown on religious freedom, The New York Times reported.

Pastor Jin Mingri, also known as Ezra, founded Beijing Zion Church in 2007. The church grew to become one of the largest unofficial congregations in China, with several satellite campuses and over 1,000 attendees at weekend services.

Jin, 56, was detained on Friday at his home in Beihai, Guangxi Province, according to his daughter, Grace Jin, who resides in the United States. Around the same time, nearly 30 other Zion Church pastors or workers were taken into custody or went missing in cities including Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, she said.

Calls to Beihai police went unanswered on Sunday. Jin’s family has been unable to contact him but heard from other church members—some of whom were later released—that he is being accused of illegal dissemination of religious information, according to The New York Times.

While the Chinese Constitution guarantees freedom of religion, in practice, the Chinese Communist Party permits only state-approved congregations to operate openly. Nevertheless, tens of millions of Chinese Christians are estimated to worship in underground or “house” churches.

Under President Xi Jinping, persecution of these unofficial congregations has intensified, alongside a broader crackdown on religion, particularly targeting Islam. In 2018, a nationwide campaign led to the closure of several prominent house churches, including Beijing Zion.

The government regularly encourages citizens to report unsanctioned religious gatherings, sometimes labeling them as cults, to the authorities.

Since 2018, Pastor Jin experienced frequent surveillance and harassment, forcing him to leave Beijing. He was also barred from leaving China to visit family members who relocated abroad that year. Currently, Jin’s daughter, mother, and two younger brothers live in the United States.

Despite these challenges, Jin continued to lead Zion Church by holding smaller, scattered gatherings and sharing sermon videos online. During the COVID-19 pandemic, while many churches ceased operations, Zion’s congregation grew rapidly, reaching audiences of up to 10,000 across China on platforms including Zoom, YouTube, and WeChat.

In recent months, concerns about another crackdown grew among Zion members. Surveillance on Jin intensified, and in September, the government issued new regulations restricting religious activity online to officially registered channels.

Jin had proposed to state security officers that he might retire from his leadership role to join his family abroad, but the officers refused to allow him to leave China, according to The New York Times.

“After this kind of posturing, it seemed like something big was going to happen again,” Jin’s daughter said. “We just didn’t know when or to what extent. But I also feel like my dad is always the optimist.”

She added, “He is sort of like, ‘Well, I can’t live in fear every day, so I’m just going to continue on with what I need to do.’”

Following the news of Jin’s arrest, former US Vice President Mike Pence called on the Chinese government to release him in a post on X.

Corey Jackson, founder of Luke Alliance—a US-based group advocating for persecuted Christians in China—described the recent detentions as “without a doubt” the largest crackdown on Christianity in China since 2018.

“If this is the first move, then it could be far worse down the line,” Jackson said. However, he expressed confidence that Chinese Christians would continue to gather.

“The Chinese church is probably stronger than the world realises, maybe stronger than the Communist Party realises,” he said. “And I think that’s part of the problem the Communist Party is facing.”

Why Qualcomm is facing an antitrust probe in China

**Why Qualcomm is Facing an Antitrust Probe in China**
*By Dwaipayan Roy | Oct 12, 2025, 06:21 PM*

**What’s the story?**
China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) has launched an antitrust investigation into US-based semiconductor giant Qualcomm. The probe follows Qualcomm’s admission that it failed to notify Chinese authorities about its acquisition of Israeli connected-vehicle technology provider Autotalks, a deal completed in June 2025. This lack of notification came despite SAMR’s clear order that the transaction required approval from the Chinese market regulator.

**Regulatory oversight**
Earlier, in March 2024, SAMR informed Qualcomm that its deal with Autotalks needed regulatory approval. However, Qualcomm responded later that month stating it would not take further action to seek that approval. Despite this, Qualcomm proceeded with the acquisition in June without notifying Chinese regulators. As a result, SAMR initiated an antitrust investigation into Qualcomm for possible violations of China’s anti-monopoly law related to the transaction.

**Market position**
Qualcomm’s presence in China remains significant. The company supplies chips to major Chinese smartphone manufacturers, including Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo, and OnePlus. With a market capitalization of approximately $165.72 billion, Qualcomm continues to be a leading player in the global semiconductor industry. Although the ongoing antitrust probe and a recent dip in share prices pose short-term challenges, Qualcomm maintains a diverse client base spanning various technology sectors.

Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

Israeli spyware maker NSO acquired by US investment group

**Israeli Spyware Maker NSO Acquired by US Investment Group**

*By Akash Pandey | October 11, 2025, 10:59 AM*

A US investment group has acquired the Israeli spyware manufacturer NSO Group, the company notorious for creating the iPhone spyware Pegasus. This acquisition was confirmed by NSO spokesperson Oded Hershowitz, who told TechCrunch that “an American investment group has invested tens of millions of dollars in the company and has acquired controlling ownership.” However, Hershowitz did not reveal the exact amount or the identities of the investors involved.

### Deal Details: NSO’s Core Operations to Stay in Israel

The confirmation follows a report by Israeli tech news site Calcalist, which stated that a group led by Hollywood producer Robert Simonds had agreed to purchase the surveillance technology company for tens of millions of dollars.

Despite the change in ownership, Hershowitz assured that NSO Group’s headquarters and core operations will remain in Israel. The company will continue to operate under the supervision and regulation of relevant Israeli authorities.

### Major Leadership Change

As part of the acquisition deal, NSO’s co-founder and executive chairman Omri Lavie will step down from his role. This marks a significant leadership transition for the company. Neither Lavie, Simonds, nor Simonds’ Hollywood company STX Entertainment have publicly commented on this development yet.

### Controversies Surrounding NSO Group

NSO Group has been at the center of numerous controversies since its inception. Its spyware has been linked to targeting journalists, dissidents, and human rights defenders through government customers in several countries, including India, Mexico, Morocco, Poland, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

In 2021, the US Commerce Department banned American companies from trading with NSO after it was discovered that the company had targeted a dozen US government officials abroad.

### Concerns Over the Acquisition

John Scott-Railton, a senior researcher at Citizen Lab who has spent over a decade investigating abuses of NSO’s spyware, expressed serious concerns regarding the acquisition. He questioned the trustworthiness of someone like Robert Simonds overseeing a company with such a controversial history.

“This dictator tech does not belong anywhere near Americans or our constitutionally protected rights or freedoms,” Scott-Railton stated.

The future of NSO under new American ownership remains to be closely watched, especially given the company’s troubled past and global impact on privacy and human rights.
