‘Heated Rivalry’ Scores UK and Irish Release on Sky

**Heated Rivalry** has finally found a home in the U.K. and Ireland. The popular gay hockey romance series is set to premiere on Sky and its streaming service Now in January, Sky and Bell Media announced Wednesday.

The series is currently airing on the streamer Crave in Canada. In the United States, **Heated Rivalry** is available on HBO Max, while fans in New Zealand can watch the show on Sky.

Created for television by *Letterkenny* alum Jacob Tierney, the series is adapted from Rachel Reid’s novel of the same name. It centers around a fictional hockey universe, focusing on two rival professional hockey players: Canadian-born Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams) of the fictitious Montreal Metros, and Russian-born Ilya Rozanov (Connor Storrie) of the fictitious Boston Raiders. The story follows their years-long secret relationship as they navigate the challenges of love and sport.

Jacob Tierney and Brendan Brady serve as showrunners for the series, which is produced by Accent Aigu Entertainment in association with Bell Media’s Crave. The show is distributed internationally by Sphere Abacus. Lucy Criddle, Director of Acquisitions and Strategic Projects, and Alexander Wright, Acquisitions Manager, handled the acquisition for Sky.

**Heated Rivalry** is based on the second book in a series of gay hockey romance novels by Rachel Reid, all set within the same universe.

A synopsis from the show’s producers reads:

*“Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov are two of the biggest stars in Major League Hockey, bound by ambition, rivalry, and a magnetic pull neither of them fully understands. What begins as a secret fling between two confused teenagers at 17 evolves into a years-long journey of love, denial, and self-discovery.*

*Over the next eight years, as they chase glory on the ice, they struggle to navigate their feelings off of it. Torn between the sport they live for and the love they can’t ignore, Shane and Ilya must decide if there’s room in their fiercely competitive world for something as fragile and powerful as real love.”*

With its compelling mix of sports drama and romance, **Heated Rivalry** promises to capture the hearts of viewers around the world. Stay tuned for its U.K. and Ireland debut this January on Sky and Now.

Why Ariana Grande & Jonathan Bailey’s Kiss Was Cut From Wicked

1. Who needs a great and powerful wizard? Two-time Grammy winner Ariana Grande scored her dream role as Wicked’s Glinda some two decades after she met Kristin Chenoweth backstage at the original Broadway production. And she knew just who to ask to teach her the proper ploys when you talk to boys and what shoes to wear. Grande recalled to Entertainment Weekly of their relationship, “We sent each other so many video messages.” Added Chenoweth, “So many that I ran out of storage.” The two Elphabas shared a similarly spellbinding connection. “I did it almost immediately,” Cynthia Erivo recounted of reaching out to Idina Menzel and leaving a voicemail “because I wanted to check in and say hello and connect.” And the stage stars’ role in the two-part opus wasn’t merely an emeritus position with Menzel and Chenoweth making a cameo in 2024’s Wicked. As for whether they’ll fly into 2025’s Wicked: For Good, Chenoweth told E! News, “I think Idina and I had our moment, and it was a beautiful moment. But you know what? It’s their wand and their broom.” 2. What is this feeling, so sudden and new, Erivo felt the moment she laid eyes on Grande? The opposite of loathing, certainly. “The first time we met was at my house,” the British star detailed to Deadline in 2024. “We sat and chatted for a good few hours-five-and I think we just saw each other immediately. It was really easy. We didn’t have to think about it, we just were there and that has continued.” And, no doubt, it’s changed each star for the better. “We both made the conscious decision when we met to take care of each other,” noted Grande, “and that’s what we have done in the realest of ways, every step.” 3. Though director Jon M. Chu said that when they started filming “we weren’t sure how much we were going to do live or not,” Grande insisted it was “an immediate no-brainer” for her and Erivo to hit every note in real time. Agreed the Tony winner, “We chose to sing live because it meant that we would be further connected to the words we were saying and to each other.” And that ensured there was no place like the film’s U. K. set. Said Chu, “It was like the best concert you could have ever attended with the best seats in the house.” 4. Nothing truly bad happened on set except the fact that both Grande and Erivo battled illnesses mere days before they were set to film their most pivotal songs. “I got Covid the week before I shot ‘Defying Gravity,'” Erivo shared with The New York Times. “It was literally like, ‘Sit down, Cynthia, not yet.'” As for Grande, “Mine was the week before ‘Popular.’ I came to set with a mask on my final days of recovery to learn the hallway finale.” And try out a few jokes. “We were in the dorm room together,” Grande recounted, “and I sang in her ear, ‘Positive, you’re going to be positive!’ But I wasn’t positive anymore, don’t worry! I took the test.” 5. Grande doesn’t recall one, uh, popular bit of her performance. Reflecting on her choice to enthusiastically yell, “Right!” when Erivo finished off one of her lines in the song, the singer wrote on TikTok, “The first time I heard this was when I was listening to the live take from on set in the studio (before I had even seen the movie) and I scared myself. I called Jon immediately giggling.” Though, added Grande, “For the record, I absolutely do not remember doing this.” 6. Fully committed, the leads were game to trust their instincts, close their eyes and leap. So, yes, Erivo tried defying gravity, flying through the air on wires. “I knew going into this that stunts would be needed,” she shared in a behind-the-scenes video. “And I knew that I wanted to do my own stunts.” Which meant, “flying with a corset and a harness and songs,” she noted. But “when it works, it really does feel like magic.” As for Grande, that was her whipping around on a chandelier during “Popular”, though she wasn’t the one to narrowly avoid injury. During the first rehearsal, “One of our stunt coordinators was standing in the room just to make sure that I didn’t break all of my limbs,” she shared on The Tonight Show. “He was standing in the corner really stoically and bravely, and my foot just kind of almost breaks his face. He just kind of toughs it out.” 7. Jonathan Bailey also got in on the action as Fiyero. The setpiece for his number “Dancing Through Life” featured three different rotating wheels, each with a ladder cutting through the middle. Almost 180-feet long by 145-feet wide and 45-feet high, it was “very dangerous,” Chu acknowledged to Entertainment Weekly. “Insurance, alone, really didn’t want us to do this.” It was so risky, in fact, “I wasn’t sure they were gonna allow Jonathan Bailey in the tornado wheel because of safety,” choreographer Christopher Scott. “Which makes sense, because this is, he needs to carry on. We can’t injure our Fiyero.” Instead, they employed a collection of engineers to monitor the situation, shifting the speed as the performers leapt, turned and danced their way through. 8. Given the option of airbrushing her skin or relying on CGI to make her appear emerald, Erivo gave the green light to the former. “I wanted to look back at a reflection and see a green woman in front of me,” she explained in an Instagram video. “I really wanted for her skin to feel textured. When you look at it, there’s freckles, and there’s tone, and shade, just like skin should be. She has these green eyes that come from the genetic makeup of who she is, and it isn’t just on her, it’s in her.” They dubbed her particular shade “Cynthia Green.” And to ensure the freckles were consistent, “We did, like, a vacuum-form mask of my face,” Erivo explained during a November 2024 appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show. “Then they put little holes in the mask. So they would put the mask on like a stencil and airbrush the freckles on so they would stay there.” 10. Depending on how much wickedness was being thrust upon her, “head, chest, hands, full body,” she told Elle of the painting process, it could take up to four hours. In contrast, Grande felt that all she had to do was click her heels three times. “I take the least amount of time,” she shared in one on-set clip. The process involved tattoo cover-up, careful wig placement and the makeup routine that made Grande decide to transform her entire look and “relationship to makeup.” While quite involved, “There’s no thick eyeliner, there’s no, like, heavy crease,” she described of the beauty vibe. “The lashes are in, like, a cat shape, which still gives you the, like, cat eye lift that I usually love, but it’s also just a more honest representation of what you look like.” 13. Set designers didn’t race past even the smallest of details. Weighing in at 16 tons, the train to Emerald City took some two days to move. And that tulip field wasn’t grown with the help of CGI, rather nine million tulips were planted in a 25-acre site in Norfolk so that Munchkinland could truly bloom. Though they were careful not to lose site of the forest through the trees, Chu noted they meticulously created the Ozian forest. “It’s all in the details,” he said in a behind-the-scenes look. “It took special effects, took visual effects. It’s pretty mind blowing to think that it can go from drawings and ideas and a dream to sitting here today.”.

Anupam Kher on Robert De Niro, ‘Saaransh’ and Survival in Candid International Film Festival of India Masterclass

Indian actor Anupam Kher brought a mix of humor, grit and unvarnished honesty to his International Film Festival of India (IFFI) masterclass, “Giving Up Is Not a Choice,” holding a packed Kala Mandir audience with stories spanning his small-town beginnings, his breakout turn in “Saaransh,” more than 540 screen credits and a career-defining encounter with Robert De Niro. The session was motivational address, entertainment and a window into his unique life as a performer. Kher was just 28 when he played a 65-year-old man in Mahesh Bhatt’s “Saaransh” in 1984. He later crossed over to Hollywood with films such as “Silver Linings Playbook” (2012) and the series “New Amsterdam,” and has performed in “almost all Indian languages.” A long-time admirer of Robert De Niro, Kher wrote papers on “Mean Streets” and “Taxi Driver” during his student years. Decades later, as he explored an international career, the actor was cast in David O. Russell’s “Silver Linings Playbook” a project that already had De Niro attached. The opportunity to work with his idol seemed within reach, but to his surprise, De Niro initially resisted the presence of Kher’s character in a crucial scene, based on the former’s own reading of the script. Kher recounted how he eventually spoke up, offering his perspective on the scene, at the risk of losing both the role and the chance to act alongside De Niro. Later that night, while offering him a drink in his van, De Niro commended Kher for his performance. “Because I was truthful and not worried about being unpopular with the unit,” Kher said, “today I can claim that Mr. Robert De Niro is one of my best friends.” During the session, 70-year-old Kher shared multiple moments from his life, when giving up simply wasn’t an option. He urged the audience to believe in themselves and become the central character of their own biopic. “What happens in your life goes on to become the story of your life. Why should life be easy? Why should life be simple? Why should life not have problems? Because it’s your problems that will make your biopic a superstar biopic,” he said, reflecting on his journey from a small town to acting beside legends around the world. “Failure is an event,” he added, “not a person, and the film of your life deserves a blockbuster ending.”.

HYBE’s Weverse superfan platform is growing – and going big in China

HYBE’s superfan platform Weverse is making significant inroads into China through strategic partnerships with two of the market’s digital giants: Tencent Music Entertainment and Alibaba. These moves mark a pivotal moment in HYBE’s international expansion strategy, as the company confirmed that Weverse reached a record high of 11.6 million monthly active users (MAUs) globally in Q3 2025. This represented 20% year-over-year growth for Weverse, which received an undisclosed investment from Universal Music Group last year.

Last Thursday (November 6), Weverse announced its new collaboration with QQ Music, China’s largest music streaming platform owned by Tencent Music Entertainment. This partnership enables Chinese users to seamlessly access Weverse content and engage with their favorite artists. The tie-up eliminates barriers that previously complicated access for Chinese fans, creating a more integrated and user-friendly experience.

The second part of Weverse’s China expansion is the launch of a flagship Weverse Shop on Tmall, the e-commerce platform operated by digital giant Alibaba, earlier this year. The Tmall Weverse store, launched in June, sells official merchandise and light sticks for 17 Weverse artists. This provides Chinese consumers with authenticated products through one of the country’s most trusted retail channels.

The Tmall venture has already proven successful. In just five months of operation, the Weverse Shop earned Tmall’s “2025 Supernova Brand” award, a recognition given to overseas brands demonstrating strong sales performance, rapid growth, high search volume, and positive customer reviews.

HYBE CEO Jason Jae-sang Lee explained the company’s measured approach to the Chinese market during an earnings call with investors on November 10. The company’s strategy in China minimizes direct investment and operational challenges by leveraging the established infrastructure and user bases of Tencent and Alibaba.

“Rather than putting in our resources directly, we have been utilizing corporate partnerships. And so we have not been trying to maximize profits coming from China, but we understand that there are so many Chinese fans who love and support our artists,” Lee said.

He added, “We decided to partner with QQ Music, the strongest streaming platform in China, as well as Tmall, so that more Chinese fans can engage with our artists more actively. So it was more of a company-to-company partnership. And such partnerships are already receiving very positive responses.”

Lee also revealed that “in addition to the currently available Weverse DM,” HYBE is “discussing additional services to be available on these platforms.” He emphasized, “So in China, we’re not aggressive yet, but we are continuing to look for and implement solutions that can best serve our fans in China.”

Weverse’s expansion into China comes as the platform continues to experience strong growth globally. HYBE CEO Lee attributed the recent uplift in MAUs primarily to BTS members actively returning to the platform following their military service obligations, combined with diverse global activities by artists on Weverse.

China represents a crucial market for HYBE’s expansion ambitions, and the statistics reveal why. China’s two biggest music streaming providers, Tencent Music Entertainment (TME) and NetEase Cloud Music (NCM), accounted for around 171 million paying users combined at the end of 2024. Over 25 million paying music subscribers were added in China in 2024 alone, according to senior industry sources—compared to just 3.2 million added in the USA.

China is also rapidly gaining global market share in music streaming subscription revenues. According to IFPI data, China’s annual streaming subscription revenues surpassed USD $1 billion in 2024, up 18.9% year-over-year. In doing so, China surpassed Germany to become the world’s third-largest music streaming subscription market. MBW has previously predicted that China may leapfrog the world’s second-largest subscription market, the UK, by 2026.

Earlier this year, HYBE officially launched HYBE China, a subsidiary based in Beijing to support artist activities in the country, further underscoring the company’s commitment to strengthening its presence in this vital market.
