Former Rep. George Santos released from prison after Trump commutes his sentence

(CNN) Disgraced former Rep. George Santos, who had been serving a seven-year term for fraud charges that led to his ouster from Congress, was released from prison on Friday night after President Donald Trump commuted his sentence, his lawyer told CNN.

Trump first announced the commutation on Truth Social on Friday evening. According to attorney Joseph Murray, Santos’ family picked him up from the prison about five hours later.

“George Santos was somewhat of a ‘rogue,’ but there are many rogues throughout our Country that aren’t forced to serve seven years in prison,” the president wrote on Truth Social. “George has been in solitary confinement for long stretches of time and, by all accounts, has been horribly mistreated. Therefore, I just signed a Commutation, releasing George Santos from prison, IMMEDIATELY. Good luck George, have a great life,” Trump added.

Trump’s commutation comes just months after Santos, 37, surrendered on July 25 to serve 87 months in prison. Before he surrendered, Santos told Saudi outlet Al Arabiya English that he asked Trump for a pardon but believed he “got stonewalled.”

“I don’t think it made it to the president,” Santos said of his pardon request at the time. “Unfortunately, gatekeepers have blockaded for it to ever get to the president.”

But even from behind bars, Santos continued to make his case. According to his verified X page, he wrote an open letter to Trump earlier this week, pleading for “fairness” while also saying he takes “full responsibility” for his actions.

“Mr. President, I am not asking for sympathy. I am asking for fairness for the chance to rebuild. I know I have made mistakes in my past. I have faced my share of consequences, and I take full responsibility for my actions. But no man, no matter his flaws, deserves to be lost in the system, forgotten and unseen, enduring punishment far beyond what justice requires,” Santos wrote in the letter published in The South Shore Press.

The law firm that represented Santos celebrated the president’s move, telling CNN, “We applaud the President for correcting this injustice.”

Murray posted on X a message on behalf of Santos thanking GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene — who he said “fought like a lion” for him — as well as Lauren Boebert, Anna Paulina Luna, and former Congressman Matt Gaetz, whom he described as “in regular contact.”

Santos also expressed gratitude to “the greatest DOJ team ever assembled,” specifically naming Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, Associated Deputy AG Diego Pestana, and US Pardon Attorney Ed Martin, among others.

Martin wrote on X he was “honored” to have played “a small role” in Trump granting “clemency” to Santos, and thanked the president for “making clemency great again.”

Meanwhile, the commutation drew mixed reactions from lawmakers. Taylor Greene, who wrote a letter to Trump in August asking him to commute Santos’ sentence, also thanked the president in a post on X, adding that Santos “was unfairly treated and put in solitary confinement, which is torture!!”

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, however, slammed Trump for focusing on Santos instead of Americans’ health care — an issue at the center of the ongoing government shutdown.

“Donald Trump has time to free serial fraudster George Santos from prison. But he can’t be bothered to address the Republican healthcare crisis crushing working class Americans,” Jeffries said in a post on X.

In August 2024, the former congressman pleaded guilty to aggravated identity theft and wire fraud charges stemming from activity during his 2022 midterm campaign.

“I deeply regret my conduct,” Santos said in court at that time. “I accept full responsibility for my actions.”

Santos was expelled from Congress in December 2023, before completing a full term in the US House, becoming only the sixth lawmaker ever to be expelled from the chamber.

During his short time in Congress, reports emerged of Santos having fabricated parts of his biography, including his employment history and education. He eventually admitted to doing that.

Santos represented parts of Long Island and Queens and attempted to run in another New York district before pleading guilty.

Santos had been serving out his sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution in Fairton, southern New Jersey, per the federal Bureau of Prisons.

Teen gang banger, drill rapper, 17, already a ‘career criminal’ with 20 busts: ‘Raise the Age allows this to happen’

A 17-year-old gang member from the Bronx, who has been arrested 20 times, has become the poster child for critics of the Raise the Age law, police sources say.

The teenager, drill rapper Julian Turner, first came to police attention at age 14 when he was arrested for shooting a man. His latest arrest occurred on October 10, when he was caught allegedly carrying a gun on a subway platform at Penn Station, according to court records and law enforcement officials.

“You have a 17-year-old kid who tried to kill people with a gun and is still walking around with guns,” said a Manhattan police officer. “What do you think he’s going to do with a gun? He’s going to kill somebody.”

All of Turner’s arrests have taken place since the left-leaning April 2017 legislation raised the age of criminal responsibility to 18. The law was designed to keep children out of the criminal justice system and reduce youth incarceration. But in Turner’s case, it appears to have had little effect on rehabilitation.

Turner, an alleged member of the Young Gunnaz gang and known in the drill rap scene as Baby B-Dot, remains defiant. “I’m not a baby,” officials quoted him as saying.

Retired NYPD Assistant Commissioner of Youth Services Kevin O’Connor criticized the law’s limitations, stating, “Raise the Age does not allow the judges to use prior history when determining what to do with these kids. Here he is at 17—a career criminal. Raise the Age allows this to happen. How many people have to get shot or killed before they change the law?”

At the time of his latest arrest, Turner, who is currently on parole for juvenile offenses until August 2026, was on a subway train on the A/C/E line at Penn Station just before noon. An MTA worker noticed Turner and another teenager flashing gang signs. The subway engineer also observed Turner fidgeting with something in his waistband and alerted police who were on the platform, sources said.

When officers attempted to question and search Turner, he allegedly resisted and wrestled with them on the platform—an incident captured on police body camera footage. Officers eventually found a loaded handgun with a defaced serial number. Turner was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and resisting arrest and has been held on $75,000 cash bail or $175,000 bond, prosecutors said.

Turner’s criminal history is extensive. On September 2, he allegedly robbed a 32-year-old man at gunpoint in Morris Heights and was charged with robbery and criminal possession of a weapon.

Turner’s life of crime reportedly began at age 10. On December 19, 2018, he allegedly pulled a fake gun on two boys aged 11 and 13, threatening them and punching the younger child. Arrested with a knife, Turner faced charges of menacing, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon. Because he was a minor, outcomes of these early cases remain confidential.

The following year, Turner allegedly slashed a 14-year-old’s ear with a box cutter in Kingsbridge. Police also report that on August 31, 2019, the then 11-year-old Turner stabbed a 71-year-old woman’s hand after grabbing an item from a vendor’s table. Once again, records for these incidents are sealed due to his age.

At age 14, Turner’s violent activities escalated. On September 19, 2022, he allegedly fired shots at a Dunkin’ Donuts from the back of a scooter in Kingsbridge, striking the restaurant’s window but causing no injuries. Just days later, he reportedly shot a 20-year-old man in the leg outside a Kingsbridge Heights restaurant.

Then Chief of Detectives James Essig described Turner’s record at that time as staggering: “Eighteen arrests. He’s 14-years-old.” Turner was charged with attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon and sent to a juvenile detention facility, although the length of his stay remains undisclosed.

O’Connor slammed the current system, adding, “There’s no accountability with Raise the Age. How many times is it going to take? How many people have to get shot or killed before they change the law?”

Turner’s lawyer could not be reached for comment.

Influencer who scammed supermarket with fake cash begs fans for forgiveness

Irish TikTok Creator Alex Nolan Admits to Multiple Fraud Charges Over Counterfeit €50 Notes

Irish TikTok creator Alex Nolan has admitted to multiple fraud charges after being caught using counterfeit €50 notes at a SuperValu supermarket. The influencer, who has nearly 53,000 followers on TikTok, is known for his comedy and lifestyle videos.

According to court reports, Nolan attempted to use the fake bills three separate times. Each time, he purchased a low-cost drink worth around €2.30 and received over €45 in real change. However, after the third attempt, supermarket staff noticed the pattern and reviewed CCTV footage, quickly uncovering the scam.

Nolan appeared before the court earlier this month and pleaded guilty to several offences under the Theft and Fraud Offences Act. The case has been adjourned until January of next year.

**“Every Action Has a Reaction”: Alex Nolan Posts Apology Video**

Following news of his guilty plea, Nolan shared a heartfelt video on his TikTok account on October 8, 2025. In the clip, he addressed his followers directly and explained why he decided to speak out.

“I didn’t know whether to make a video or address anything in the last 24 hours, ’cause I didn’t really know how to handle it or take it,” he began. “But yes, a year and a half ago, I made a huge mistake. Yes, I hold my hands up to the mistake, for every action has a reaction.”

He went on to say that he wanted to discuss the situation because he has “a lot of young followers” and felt responsible for setting a positive example.

“I’m not making any excuses for myself or justifying anything that I’ve done. Because what I done was wrong,” Nolan continued. “I was in a confusing phase of life, not really knowing what to do or how to handle myself. And I obviously made a huge mistake that I am facing the consequences for now.”

Nolan also emphasized that he has changed since the incident. “But what I do say to the people who do look up to me, it’s what you do after you make the mistakes, how you hold yourself. I opted a bad way out and I done a complete 180 since then,” he said. “I feel like doing what I’ve done isn’t right. And I don’t agree with any of it.”

On TikTok, Nolan wrote:
*“Hope my silly mistakes in the past can help young lads realise that in hard times don’t opt for ‘easy money’ or stupid mistakes. I take full responsibility for my actions and always will. It’s about what you do to better yourself after making these silly mistakes, and my content and everyone that knows me knows I put 110% effort every day to better myself and to spread positivity. Thank you to everyone sending me kind messages, I do appreciate it ❤️”*

**Social Media Reactions**

The comments section on Nolan’s TikTok was filled with a mix of jokes about being in a “money-making business,” but many people also expressed support.

One user wrote, “He’s a young lad who made a mistake. No one got hurt, he didn’t harm anyone. He’s not a terrible human. Keep your head up man, you’ll be grand.”

Another TikToker commented, “Well said. Done a complete switch around from that time in your life, brother. ❤”

A third person added, “You didn’t just do a 180, you done a 360 & turned it all around & you’ve held it all together. I don’t know you personally but so proud of your growth 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻.”

Despite the chaotic nature of the internet, stories like Nolan’s serve as reminders of personal accountability and growth.

Punjab Congress candidate Karanbir Singh Burj files nomination for bypolls

The Tarn Taran assembly seat fell vacant following the death of AAP MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal in June. Ahead of the bypoll, Congress candidate Burj held a roadshow before filing his nomination papers.

Several senior leaders participated in the roadshow, including Congress general secretary in-charge of Punjab Bhupesh Baghel, Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Assembly Partap Singh Bajwa, and former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi.

Speaking on the occasion, Bhupesh Baghel called upon party workers to fight the election with full dedication and commitment. He emphasized the importance of this bypoll for both the Congress party and Punjab, expressing confidence that the party would win the election by an impressive margin.

Addressing party workers, Amrinder Singh Raja Warring said the Tarn Taran bypoll would set the tone and direction for Punjab ahead of the 2027 assembly elections. He appealed to voters to choose their candidate wisely — someone who would stand by them round the clock.

Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa warned against the “return of dark days” in Punjab, when citizens did not feel safe and secure. He added that even today, safety remains a concern, particularly along the border belt.

Former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), stating that it had not only “betrayed” the people of Punjab but also let down its own workers. He pointed out that the AAP did not nominate a single person from the Dalit community, farmers, or poor families to the Rajya Sabha.

Important dates for the Tarn Taran bypoll are as follows:
– Last date for filing nominations: October 21
– Scrutiny of nomination papers: October 22
– Last date for withdrawal of candidature: October 24
– Counting of votes: November 14

Tamil Nadu cancels licence of Sresan Pharmaceuticals, shuts down company

The Tamil Nadu state health department has confirmed the shutdown of Sresan Pharmaceuticals following an investigation that revealed the presence of toxic contaminants, specifically Diethylene Glycol (DEG), in their product Coldrif syrup. This development comes after multiple deaths have been linked to the consumption of the adulterated medicine.

In response to the findings, the health department has ordered comprehensive inspections across all pharmaceutical manufacturing units throughout Tamil Nadu. Large-scale inspections are currently underway to ensure compliance with safety standards, ANI reported.

On October 9, the owner of Sresan Pharmaceuticals, Ranganathan, was arrested in Chennai by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) from Madhya Pradesh. He has been remanded in 10-day police custody by a Parasia court. Additionally, two senior drug inspectors have been suspended due to dereliction of duty, as reported by ANI.

The Tamil Nadu government has reiterated its directive for thorough inspections of all pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities in the state to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader K Annamalai criticized the Tamil Nadu government’s handling of the crisis. He highlighted that despite the deaths of 23 people in Madhya Pradesh and three children in Rajasthan linked to the toxic Coldrif syrup, only two drug inspectors had been suspended. Annamalai accused the state government of attempting to shirk responsibility.

“A drug manufactured by a private pharmaceutical company in Kanchipuram has reportedly caused multiple deaths, yet the Tamil Nadu government is trying to create an illusion of having no connection or accountability,” he said. He also underscored the company’s history of quality violations and the apparent lack of proper inspections by state drug authorities.

Meanwhile, the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has issued a directive to all states and Union Territories to ensure strict compliance with the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945. This includes mandatory testing of raw materials and finished pharmaceutical products before approval.

Earlier, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted searches at seven locations in Chennai linked to the Sresan Pharmaceuticals case, addressing money laundering charges connected to the Coldrif syrup deaths. Multiple ED teams from the Chennai Zonal Office carried out simultaneous raids based on specific intelligence inputs.

According to officials, searches are ongoing at premises including the residences of senior officials from the Tamil Nadu Drug Control Office. The agency is investigating financial transactions and suspected proceeds of crime related to the production and distribution of the adulterated medicine.

The deaths caused by toxic cough syrups have raised national concern and prompted swift regulatory actions. Following these events, the Delhi government banned the sale, purchase, and distribution of Coldrif syrup after declaring it “not of standard quality,” according to an official order dated October 10.

The order stated:
“Coldrif Syrup (Paracetamol, Phenylephrine Hydrochloride, Chlorpheniramine Maleate Syrup), manufactured in May 2025 by Sresan Pharmaceuticals in Tamil Nadu, was found to contain Diethylene Glycol (46.28% w/v), a toxic chemical known to be hazardous to human health.”

All stakeholders were directed to immediately halt the sale, purchase, and distribution of the affected batch. The public has been strongly advised against consuming the product due to its potential health risks.

This incident underscores the critical importance of stringent quality control and regulatory oversight within the pharmaceutical industry to safeguard public health.

Nurturing young minds

Ayesha, a 13-year-old girl from southern Punjab, used to be a bright, cheerful student. After the devastating floods this year, everything changed. Her family lost their home. Her father’s livelihood was washed away, and they were forced to relocate to a crowded shelter.

Since then, Ayesha has been struggling with persistent anxiety: trouble sleeping, constant worry, and sudden panic attacks at school. Her teachers noticed that she had become withdrawn and easily startled.

Ayesha’s story is not unique. Across Pakistan, thousands of children and adolescents like Ayesha are silently suffering the psychological consequences of disasters, climate change, poverty, displacement, and violence. Their pain is often invisible but no less real.

With the help of a local mental health and psychosocial support counsellor, and a trained teacher, Ayesha began to recover. She learned breathing techniques and mindfulness to manage her anxiety, joined a peer support group, and slowly regained her confidence. Her story is a reminder that healing is possible—that every child deserves the chance to thrive.

With over 60 percent of Pakistan’s population under the age of 25, we are a remarkably young nation. This demographic reality presents both an opportunity and a responsibility. Ensuring the mental health of our children and adolescents is not only a moral imperative but also vital for our country’s future.

Unfortunately, many young people face a range of adversities that threaten their mental well-being. Natural disasters like floods and earthquakes displace families and disrupt lives. Poverty and unemployment create chronic stress and insecurity. Violence and abuse, both domestic and societal, leave deep emotional scars. Educational pressures, bullying, and lack of support in schools compound the burden.

Limited access to mental health services, especially in rural areas, leaves many without help. The result? A growing mental health crisis among Pakistan’s youth—one that demands urgent attention.

Mental health isn’t just the absence of illness; it’s the foundation of how children think, feel, relate to others, and handle life’s challenges. Good mental health helps children thrive in school, build friendships, and grow into resilient adults. Poor mental health, on the other hand, can lead to academic failure, substance abuse, self-harm, and even suicide.

Yet, mental health remains one of the most neglected areas of public health in Pakistan. Stigma, lack of awareness, and limited resources mean that many children suffer in silence.

Child and adolescent mental health services are still in their infancy in our country. We struggle to establish formal referral pathways to psychiatric services for children with mental and behavioural problems, who are often presented to various practitioners in the community, including spiritual and faith healers.

Although the number of general adult psychiatrists is increasing, challenges remain in adding formal training programmes and specialised degree courses for trainees in many teaching institutions.

Supporting the mental health of children and adolescents is not just the job of psychiatrists or psychologists; it’s a collective responsibility.

Parents are the frontline defenders of their children’s mental health. Open communication, emotional warmth, and consistent support can buffer children against stress. Parents should listen without judgment, encourage the expression of feelings, avoid harsh discipline or neglect, and seek help when needed.

Parenting programmes and community awareness campaigns can empower families to support their children better.

Schools are often the first place where signs of distress appear. Teachers and school staff can play a critical role in early identification and support. That is why Psychological First Aid (PFA) training for schoolteachers is a game-changer. It equips educators with the skills to recognise signs of emotional distress, provide basic support and reassurance, and refer children to appropriate services.

Creating safe, inclusive, and nurturing school environments can also dramatically improve mental health outcomes.

Mental health services must be integrated into primary healthcare and community settings. The Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) programme is a vital initiative that aims to provide psychological support in emergencies, train frontline workers in mental healthcare, and build referral systems for specialised help.

Expanding MHPSS across districts and rural areas can ensure that help reaches those who need it most.

Faith leaders and community influencers can also help reduce stigma and promote compassion. Their voices can encourage families to seek help and support mental health initiatives.

Investing in child and adolescent mental health is not just a moral imperative; it’s a strategic one. By investing in their mental well-being today, we lay the foundation for a healthier, more resilient society tomorrow.

Pakistan’s future depends on how well we care for its young minds today.

Four shot dead during homecoming weekend in Mississippi town

Four people were killed in a shooting in the Mississippi Delta region following a high school football homecoming game, Mississippi state Sen. Derrick Simmons told The Associated Press. The incident occurred in the downtown area of the small town of Leland, Mississippi, where people had gathered after the game. Simmons, who represents the area, confirmed the information based on updates received from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement authorities involved in the investigation.

In addition to the four fatalities, four other victims were hospitalized in Greenville and later flown to a larger medical facility in the state capital, Jackson.

Authorities are currently seeking an 18-year-old man for questioning in connection with the shooting, according to a statement from the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff has urged anyone with information to contact the local police chief or sheriff’s office.

The shooting took place on the school campus during the Heidelberg Oilers’ homecoming football game on Friday night. However, it remains unclear exactly when the gunfire occurred or how close it was to the stadium.

Sheriff White, who was at the scene investigating on Saturday, stated, “Right now we’ve still got a subject at large, but I can’t give specifics.” He added that more information may be released in the coming days.

Leland is a small town of about 640 residents, located approximately 85 miles (137 kilometers) southeast of Jackson, the state capital.

‘Black Mirror’ exposes the price we pay for convenience

**Black Mirror Exposes the Price We Pay for Convenience**
*By Vinita Jain | Oct 11, 2025, 10:45 AM*

**What’s the Story?**
*Black Mirror*, the dystopian anthology series, has long been recognized for its thought-provoking exploration of technology and society. A central theme throughout the show is privacy. The series delves into how our personal data can be misused, how technology can invade our lives, and the often unforeseen consequences that follow. Here are some of the most important privacy lessons we can learn from *Black Mirror*.

### Surveillance: The Dangers of Surveillance Technology
Many episodes of *Black Mirror* highlight the risks associated with surveillance technology. From cameras to drones, the show portrays how constant monitoring can invade personal privacy and foster a pervasive sense of paranoia. While surveillance can enhance security, *Black Mirror* reminds us that it can also infringe on our personal freedom and autonomy.

### Social Media: The Impact on Privacy
Social media platforms frequently appear as a key element in *Black Mirror*’s critique of privacy concerns. The series underscores how sharing personal information online may lead to unintended consequences, such as losing control over one’s own data. It acts as a cautionary tale encouraging viewers to be mindful of what they share and to understand the potential risks involved.

### Data Misuse: Consequences of Exploitation
Another recurring theme is the dark side of data misuse, where personal information is exploited for malicious purposes or profit. *Black Mirror* emphasizes the critical importance of safeguarding personal data from unauthorized access and exploitation. Once data is released, controlling its usage becomes nearly impossible, and this reality poses significant challenges.

### Ethics: The Moral Implications of Technology
*Black Mirror* also explores the ethical questions surrounding technology, particularly regarding privacy. The series prompts viewers to consider the moral responsibilities of technology developers and users alike in protecting personal information. It encourages reflection on the ethical consequences of how we interact with technology.

### Innovation vs. Privacy: Finding the Balance
Finally, *Black Mirror* addresses the tension between technological innovation and privacy protection. While new technologies can bring tremendous benefits to our lives, they often come at the expense of privacy. The show highlights the need for careful consideration when integrating emerging technologies, ensuring that personal information remains secure.

*Black Mirror* serves as a powerful reminder of the complex relationship between technology, convenience, and privacy. As we embrace innovation, it is crucial to remain vigilant about protecting our personal data and upholding ethical standards in the digital age.

Why J&J has been fined $966M in the US

**Why J&J Has Been Fined $966M in the US**
*By Dwaipayan Roy | Oct 08, 2025, 05:15 PM*

Johnson & Johnson (J&J) has been ordered by a Los Angeles jury to pay $966 million to the family of a woman who died from mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer. This ruling follows the jury’s finding that the company’s talc products were linked to cancer.

### Background of the Case
The lawsuit was filed by the family of Mae Moore, an 88-year-old California resident who passed away in 2021. The family initiated the case against J&J in the same year, alleging that the company’s talc products contributed to her illness.

### Verdict Details
The jury awarded $16 million in compensatory damages and an astounding $950 million in punitive damages against J&J. In response, Erik Haas, J&J’s global vice president of litigation, announced the company’s intention to appeal the decision. He described the verdict as “egregious and unconstitutional” and criticized the plaintiff lawyers for relying on what he called “junk science” that should not have been admitted in court.

### Product Safety and Company Response
Despite the verdict, J&J maintains that its talc-based products are safe, contain no asbestos, and do not cause cancer. The company discontinued sales of talc-based baby powder in the United States in 2020, transitioning to a cornstarch-based alternative. It is important to note that mesothelioma has been medically linked to asbestos exposure.

Trey Branham, attorney for Moore’s family, expressed hope that this ruling will finally hold Johnson & Johnson accountable for what he termed “senseless deaths.”

### Ongoing Litigation
Johnson & Johnson currently faces over 67,000 lawsuits alleging cancer caused by its baby powder and other talc products. While the majority of these claims relate to ovarian cancer, mesothelioma cases form a smaller portion of the litigation.

The company has attempted to resolve the mass litigation by filing for bankruptcy protection, but three such proposals have been rejected by federal courts.

### Settlement and Trial Landscape
Though J&J has settled some mesothelioma claims, it has yet to achieve a nationwide settlement agreement. Consequently, many mesothelioma lawsuits have proceeded to trial in various state courts over recent months.

In the past year alone, J&J has faced several significant verdicts related to mesothelioma, with Monday’s ruling representing one of the largest monetary penalties to date. The company has, however, successfully reduced some awards on appeal, including a $260 million verdict overturned by a state judge in Oregon.

This recent verdict underscores the ongoing legal challenges Johnson & Johnson faces concerning its talc products and the serious claims raised by affected consumers and their families. The company’s appeal process will be closely watched as these cases continue to unfold.
