McDowell says he didn’t nominate Steen because ‘her election would be step backwards’

Senator Michael McDowell has stated that he did not nominate Maria Steen for the presidency because, “as a liberal, I felt her election would have been a step backwards for the Ireland I believe in.”

Maria Steen is a conservative campaigner who advocated for a ‘no’ vote in both the abortion and same-sex marriage referendums. She received 18 of the 20 required Oireachtas nominations but criticized Mr. McDowell following her failed bid.

Ms. Steen claimed she had been waiting to see if Mr. McDowell would run for president herself. She also said she had expected his support, as they campaigned on the same side during the family and care referenda — proposals that were overwhelmingly rejected by the public.

In a written statement, Mr. McDowell explained his position in detail:

“In early 2025, I considered suggestions that I should seek nomination for the presidential election and decided against doing so. My decision was made public on May 23rd in this newspaper.

In July, my office was informed of plans by pro-life members of the Oireachtas, including Aontú, to establish a process in which members of the Oireachtas would interview aspiring candidates chosen by them. These aspirants included Declan Ganley and Maria Steen, both known pro-life activists. I indicated then that I was not interested in becoming involved with such a caucus.”

Mr. McDowell also revealed that he was approached by Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín on a second occasion but again declined to participate in the process.

He further discussed correspondence he received from Ms. Steen regarding her nomination:

“A number of people sounded me out as to whether I would support their candidacies. On September 1st, Steen contacted me by text saying: ‘you may have seen I am looking for a nomination would you have time to take a quick call today.’

I replied as follows: ‘Maria, thanks for your message. My position is that as I have already informed two hopefuls, I will make no decision or commitments on nominations until the likely set of nominees becomes clearer including the possibility of Local Authority nominations and whether Sinn Féin are running an SF candidate.'”

Mr. McDowell concluded:

“I did not consider that a face-to-face meeting with Steen would serve any useful purpose, as her Seanad supporters well knew my position.

Suggestions that I was motivated by envy, jealousy, misogyny or other base reasons are simply untrue. For the reasons stated above, I was opposed to her election, which might very well have happened, in my view. It would have been divisive and a step backwards for the kind of Ireland I believe in.”

‘Dependence mustn’t turn into compulsion’: RSS chief amid US tariffs

**‘Dependence mustn’t turn into compulsion’: RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat on US Tariffs**

*By Chanshimla Varah | Oct 02, 2025, 10:46 AM*

At the Vijayadashami event in Nagpur, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat addressed the recent tariff policy imposed by the United States on Indian goods. He stated that the US’s move was primarily “done keeping in mind the interest of their own.”

Bhagwat emphasized the reality of global interdependence but cautioned that it should never turn into compulsion. He urged India to focus on *swadeshi* (self-reliance) as the only viable path forward. “Our harmony must be our own,” he remarked, underlining the importance of national self-sufficiency.

**Regional Stability: Concerns Over Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh**

The RSS chief also commented on the recent unrest in neighboring countries such as Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. He warned that such violent disturbances could invite foreign interference and lead to chaos.

“Violent uprisings only lead to anarchy,” Bhagwat said, adding that forces intent on creating disorder in Bharat are active both inside and outside the country. He distinguished between democratic movements, which bring change, and violent revolts, which do not. Reflecting on history, he noted, “France rose against its king and Napoleon became emperor. So many so-called socialist movements happened; all these socialist countries are now capitalist.”

**National Harmony: Response to the Recent Attack in Pahalgam**

Addressing India’s rich diversity, Mohan Bhagwat stressed the need to embrace differences within the framework of law. He condemned actions that provoke communities and called for fair administration.

“The administration must act fairly, but the youth must also stay alert and intervene if needed. The grammar of anarchy needs to be stopped,” he asserted. He further emphasized that an “us” versus “them” mentality is unacceptable in a united India.

**Economic Focus: Supporting Swadeshi and Prime Minister Modi’s Push for Local Products**

The call for self-reliance echoes Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeals encouraging Indians to buy products made in India. Modi highlighted the importance of recognizing and supporting locally crafted goods produced through the hard work of the country’s youth.

“Often, we don’t even know if the comb in our pocket is made in India or abroad. We should buy products that are Made in India, crafted through the hard work of our country’s sons and daughters,” Modi said in one of his speeches.

As India navigates international economic challenges and regional uncertainties, leaders continue to stress the importance of self-reliance, national harmony, and democratic change driven by peaceful means.

‘Dependence mustn’t turn into compulsion’: RSS chief amid US tariffs

**‘Dependence Mustn’t Turn into Compulsion’: RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat on US Tariffs**

*By Chanshimla Varah | October 2, 2025*

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has responded to the recent tariff policies imposed by the United States on Indian goods. Speaking at the Vijayadashami event in Nagpur, Bhagwat remarked that the US tariff measures are primarily designed to safeguard their own national interests.

He emphasized the reality of global interdependence but cautioned that such reliance should never amount to compulsion. “We must move towards swadeshi and self-reliance; there is no alternative. Our harmony must be our own,” he stated.

**Regional Stability: Concerns Over Neighboring Countries**

Addressing recent unrest in neighboring nations such as Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, Bhagwat warned that such disturbances could invite foreign interference. He stressed that violent uprisings only lead to anarchy and instability.

“Those who seek to create disturbances in Bharat are active both inside and outside our country,” he said. Highlighting the distinction between democratic movements and violent revolts, Bhagwat recalled historical examples: “Democratic movements bring change; violent uprisings don’t. France rose against its king and Napoleon became emperor. So many so-called socialist movements happened, and all these socialist countries are now capitalist.”

**National Harmony: Embracing Diversity and Fair Administration**

Speaking on India’s diverse social fabric, the RSS chief underlined the importance of embracing differences within the bounds of law. He condemned acts that provoke communal tensions and urged for fair and impartial administration.

“The administration must act fairly, but the youth must also stay alert and intervene if needed. The grammar of anarchy needs to be stopped,” he added, condemning the ‘us vs them’ mentality as unacceptable.

**Economic Focus: The Drive Towards ‘Make in India’**

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent calls to promote swadeshi products and self-sufficiency align with Bhagwat’s message. Modi has urged Indians to reduce dependency on foreign-made goods and consciously choose products made in India.

“Often, we don’t even know if the comb in our pocket is made in India or abroad. We should buy products that are made in India, crafted through the hard work of our country’s youth—products that carry the sweat of our sons and daughters,” the Prime Minister said in one of his speeches.

The emphasis on self-reliance and indigenous production by both the RSS chief and the Prime Minister underscores a growing national narrative that advocates economic independence and cultural harmony amid global challenges.

Hamas accepting proposal could end war now: Trump

US President Donald Trump stated on Monday (local time) that the Gaza peace proposal, if accepted by Hamas, would mean the immediate end of the war. He made these remarks during a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

According to the proposal, if Hamas accepts, all remaining hostages would be released immediately, within 72 hours. Trump emphasized that this would signify the immediate end of the war itself, not just in Gaza.

Arab and Muslim countries have committed in writing to demilitarize Gaza and to decommission the military capabilities of Hamas and all other terror organizations immediately. This includes destroying all terror infrastructure, such as tunnels, weapons, and production facilities. “They have a lot of production facilities that were destroying,” Trump noted.

Expressing hope for an end to the violence, Trump said that Arab and Muslim countries likely have an understanding of how to deal with Hamas. He added that all parties would agree on a timeline for Israeli forces to withdraw in phases.

“No more shooting, hopefully,” Trump said. He stressed that as progress is made toward achieving these goals, Arab and Muslim nations need to be given the chance to fulfill their commitments in dealing with Hamas. However, if they are unable to do so, Israel would have the absolute right and full US backing to take further action.

“Israel will have my fallback to finish the job of destroying the threat of Hamas,” Trump added.

While not ruling out the possibility of Hamas rejecting the deal, Trump reiterated his full support to Israel in addressing the danger posed by Hamas.

Prime Minister Netanyahu detailed the plan, including the disarming of Hamas. He called for a peaceful civilian administration to govern Gaza and explicitly ruled out any role for Hamas or the Palestinian Authority.

“All our hostages, alive and dead, will return home. Hamas will be disarmed. Gaza will be demilitarized. Israel will retain security responsibility, including a security perimeter for the foreseeable future,” Netanyahu said.

He continued, “Gaza will have a peaceful civilian administration, run neither by Hamas nor by the Palestinian Authority. If Hamas agrees to your plan, the first step will be a withdrawal, followed by the release of all our hostages within 72 hours.”

Government shutdown impacts on national parks and surrounding California communities

Sequoia National Park Faces Uncertainty Ahead of Potential Government Shutdown

SEQUOIA NATIONAL PARK (KFSN) – As the federal government prepares to potentially shut down on Wednesday, the Sequoia National Forest and neighboring non-profits like the Sequoia Parks Conservancy could feel significant impacts.

“I am worried about my employees, they love what they do, but also we are all just trying to make a livable wage,” says Savannah Boiano of the Sequoia Parks Conservancy. The last government shutdown lasted 35 days, highlighting the challenges such interruptions can bring.

Foothill communities such as Three Rivers heavily depend on tourism drawn by the parks. A government shutdown could mean less foot traffic, which would take a toll on local sales.

“If the government shut down for a long time, the businesses and services would get hurt big time,” says Tony Konnaris, owner of Tony’s Taverna in Three Rivers. The timing of the possible shutdown is especially critical, coming just before Maritza and Tony’s grand opening of their new Greek restaurant.

Tony’s Taverna is set to welcome its first customers this Saturday afternoon. “In terms of the effects that we would feel if the park closes, it will affect us deeply—the business, the economy,” expresses Maritza Konnaris.

The couple, along with other local businesses, have shown resilience through recent wildfires and flooding. Support from loved ones and the community keeps them motivated. Despite the possibility of closures, they invite people to visit their small town.

“It’s beautiful here in Three Rivers. You have the rivers, the creeks, hiking trails, and you can take a bike ride through the back. People need to understand this isn’t just about the park; there are other activities to enjoy in this beautiful environment,” Maritza and Tony express.

Tony’s Taverna grand opening will happen this Saturday, starting at 2 p.m., government shutdown or not. Everyone is invited to join the celebration.

The government is scheduled to run out of money at 9 p.m. Tuesday here on the West Coast if a spending plan deal isn’t reached.

What did Ariana Grande say about Trump? White House responds to singer’s viral Instagram repost about the president

The White House Deputy Press Secretary, Kush Desai, has responded to singer Ariana Grande’s viral Instagram repost criticizing the Trump administration. Grande shared the post on Sunday, which targeted the current government regarding ICE raids and alleged transphobic views.

In a statement to Entertainment Weekly published on September 29, Desai seemingly mocked the singer by incorporating some of her popular song titles into his response, including *Save Your Tears*, *Get Well Soon*, and *Just Like Magic*. The statement read:

“Save your tears, Ariana. Because President Trump’s actions ended Joe Biden’s inflation crisis and are bringing in trillions in new investments. He even signed an executive order just like magic that paved the way for the FTC to crack down on Ticketmaster for ripping off Ariana Grande’s concert-going fans. Get well soon, Ariana!”

### Ariana Grande’s Instagram Repost and Criticism

On September 28, Ariana Grande reposted a message by podcaster and activist Matt Bernstein that criticized Donald Trump and his administration. The post questioned Trump supporters with rhetorical queries, highlighting issues such as ICE raids and the targeting of the trans community.

It said:
“I want to check in with Trump voters. I have one very genuine question: It’s been 250 days now that immigrants have been violently torn from their families and communities have been destroyed, now that trans people have been blamed for virtually everything and live in fear, now that free speech is on the brink of collapse for us all — has your life gotten better?”

The post continued:
“Have your groceries gotten cheaper? Has your health insurance premium gone down? Has your work/life balance improved? Can you take a vacation yet? Are you happier? Has the widespread suffering of others paid off for you in the way he promised it would, or are you still waiting?”

### The FTC Lawsuit Against Ticketmaster and Live Nation

In his response, Desai referenced the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) recent lawsuit against Ticketmaster and Live Nation. The lawsuit alleges that the companies misled ticket purchasers through deceptive resale prices.

Additionally, about a month ago, the FTC filed a similar lawsuit against Key Investment Group and its affiliates. This ticket resale company is accused of illegally sourcing tickets and reselling them at inflated prices for high-profile concerts, including Taylor Swift’s *Eras Tour* and some of Ariana Grande’s concerts.

### Ariana Grande’s Political Stance and Upcoming Projects

This is not the first time Ariana Grande has spoken out against former President Trump. She has openly supported former Vice President and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential elections.

Earlier this month, Grande also criticized the temporary cancellation of Jimmy Kimmel’s live show by reposting a message from SAG-AFTRA, showing her support for the actors’ union.

In other news, Ariana Grande is preparing for her upcoming tour to promote her latest studio album, *Eternal Sunshine*. This will be her first tour in seven years and is set to begin next year.

Fans can also look forward to the sequel to her critically and commercially successful film, *Wicked*, titled *Wicked: For Good*, which is scheduled for release next year.
