Western Australia (WA) health authorities have issued a fresh warning about a measles outbreak that has now reached 47 confirmed cases so far this year. On Wednesday, officials reported eight new cases linked to an outbreak in the Pilbara region.
Measles is a highly contagious and potentially fatal disease. Health experts warn that airborne droplets can still infect people entering a room up to 30 minutes after an infected person has left. Anyone who is not already immune and has visited an exposure location during specified dates and times should monitor themselves for symptoms over the next 7 to 18 days.
WA Health has identified several exposure sites across South Hedland, Karratha, Port Hedland, and Redbank. People who have received two doses of the measles vaccine or were born before 1966 are considered immune. However, unvaccinated individuals remain at risk of severe health complications, including death.
The disease poses particular dangers to children, pregnant women, and those who are immunocompromised. Early symptoms include fever, tiredness, runny nose, cough, sore red eyes, followed by a red blotchy rash appearing three to four days later. According to Dr. Armstrong, people with measles usually feel very unwell, with some requiring hospitalisation.
Complications from measles can be serious and include pneumonia and, less commonly, encephalitis (inflammation of the brain). Despite the recent cases, Dr Armstrong noted there is no ongoing risk of measles at the Pilbara locations currently.
Health authorities strongly recommend vaccination as the best protection against the disease.
Measles cases are surging worldwide, with several Australian states also reporting infections. Last week, a health alert was issued for Sydney’s Northern Beaches after an infected person visited multiple locations in Dee Why and Manly.
In mid-September, Victoria Health announced a confirmed measles case in a traveller returning from Europe and Bali. Dr Caroline McElnay, Victoria Health’s Chief Health Officer, highlighted the ongoing risk of measles importation through international travellers.
Several outbreaks are currently active across South-East Asia — including Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Indonesia. Recently, Queensland and Western Australia have reported cases in travellers returning from Bali.
– Ensure you are vaccinated against measles with the recommended two-dose vaccine.
– If you have visited any of the exposure sites during the specified times, monitor yourself for symptoms for at least 18 days.
– Seek medical advice promptly if you experience symptoms suggestive of measles.

While reviewing fuel expenses, Bhatia found discrepancies related to a Maruti car with a diesel tank capacity of 35 liters being recorded as having received 621 liters of fuel. When she confronted Naresh Singh for clarification, his answers were unsatisfactory. He claimed to possess only one fuel card, for both petrol and diesel.
Upon further investigation of the fuel card history, Bhatia discovered that Singh had used three separate cards—all registered under Farhan Akhtar’s name. She also uncovered a purchase of vehicle oil for a car that had been sold seven years ago, raising further concerns.

Bhatia arranged a meeting with Honey Irani during which Singh confessed to the fraudulent activity. He revealed that in 2022, he had obtained three fuel cards from Akhtar’s former driver, Santosh Kumar.
Since then, Singh had been filling petrol and diesel exclusively at the SV Road petrol pump near Bandra Lake, where he conspired with the petrol pump employee, Arun Singh. The driver frequently swiped the cards without actually fueling the vehicles and received cash payments after deducting Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 as his share from each transaction.

**Mumbai: BMC Begins Restoration of Public Properties Damaged During Maratha Reservation Protest**
A month after thousands of Marathas across Maharashtra gathered in and around Azad Maidan in South Mumbai demanding reservation, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started the process of reinstating public properties damaged during the protests.
Significant locations affected during the demonstrations include beautified traffic islands, plants on major road dividers, carpet lawns, and other smaller green belts. These restoration works fall under the jurisdiction of the civic garden department and are expected to cost the public at least Rs 10 lakhs.
The BMC’s garden department has invited quotations from at least four contractors for reinstatement work at key sites such as dividers on Mahapalika Marg (near BMC headquarters close to Azad Maidan), DN Road, NS Road bus stop, Amar Jawan Traffic Island, and LT Road traffic island. The restoration efforts include planting new trees, creating fresh carpet lawns, and replacing damaged tiling.
An officer from the BMC garden department stated, “Many small plants in traffic dividers and traffic islands were damaged during the Maratha protest. Tiles and green carpets at these traffic islands have also suffered damage and need to be replaced. Since the rains are still ongoing, plants can be transplanted immediately.”
Each restoration project is estimated to cost around Rs 3 lakhs, bringing the total expenditure by the garden department for damage caused during the Maratha Morcha to at least Rs 10 lakhs.
The protest demanding Maratha reservation began on August 29 at Azad Maidan and continued until September 3, effectively bringing South Mumbai to a standstill with thousands of agitators joining from across the state. Following the protest, about 153 metric tonnes of garbage were collected, and the affected roads were thoroughly cleaned with water sprays and machines.

Mosaic Books in downtown Kelowna, B.C., has experienced its fair share of disruptions over the years, many caused by repeat offenders.
“Our business downtown has been plagued with this for so long, we’ve just kind of given up,” said Mosaic Books owner Michael Neill.
Neill explained that shoplifting, loitering, and property damage are among the regular issues impacting his business and many others across the city.
“It’s been very frustrating,” Neill told Global News. “So much so, staff have a binder with photos of the repeat offenders and a description of the offence. This has been our book of shame, I guess. An incident book,” he added. “So that we can at least let the staff know who they’re looking for.”
Despite these challenges, Neill has newfound hope that better days may be ahead as the City of Kelowna pushes for meaningful judicial changes at the provincial and federal levels.
The city recently sent a 14-page letter to both levels of government titled *Chronic Offenders – Closing the Revolving Door*.
“Municipalities cannot deal with this on their own,” said Kelowna Mayor Tom Dyas.
The document is very Kelowna-specific. It states that in 2024, 15 offenders accounted for 1,335 police files generated at the Kelowna RCMP detachment. The letter also highlights a fourfold increase in non-compliance with bail conditions in the past five years.
The report reveals significant gaps regarding British Columbia’s charge rate, including in Kelowna. While the national charge rate has declined by 11 percent over the past decade, B.C.’s rate has plummeted by 43 percent. In Kelowna, charges are down by 48.5 percent, while incidents of crime have risen by 5.5 percent during the same period.
“What’s happening is we’re not holding those individuals accountable,” Dyas said.
One of the key calls for action in the letter involves increasing the number of Crown prosecutors. The city is asking the province to assign at least five more prosecutors in Kelowna to keep up with growing demand.
The city is also amplifying its calls for bail reform and wants the province to introduce mandatory compassionate care.
“As a community, we have worked towards creating an avenue forward for those individuals who want to find a better way,” Dyas said. “Examples would be tiny homes, our supportive housing, also our social network. But there’s a group of individuals who need more care, and it is not compassionate to leave them on our streets.”
Neill is hopeful that the badly-needed changes can be implemented to help turn the page for everyone who works and lives in the city.
“I’m just so happy to hear about this and read about this,” Neill said. “It’s long overdue.”

She emphasized the importance of Australians gaining confidence from an external investigation and advice, rather than hearing only from Optus that the issues will be resolved.
Shortly after the minister’s media address, Optus chair John Arthur told reporters the company was committed to working with the government “to do whatever needs to be done,” but he was unable to provide specific details about the independent review. “We are always welcome to external perspectives and external views, and that remains the case here,” he said.
Over the weekend following the initial outage, a second failure left thousands of customers in the New South Wales town of Dapto unable to make emergency calls. Ms. Wells highlighted that having two outages “in short succession” has caused a “very serious lack of confidence” in Optus’s ability to deliver reliable triple-0 services.
She further revealed that she sought assurances from Optus chief executive Stephen Rue and Singtel’s chief Yuen Kuan Moon that corrective action would be taken. “No-one is shying away from the fact that Optus has not complied with their obligations to the Australian people and that is what needs to be fixed here,” Ms. Wells said. “I think Optus accepts that, that this is a compliance issue on their part.”
