Carson Daly Reveals On-Air Mix-Up Involving Leonardo DiCaprio

Congratulations to Post Malone, who cleverly incorporated his surname into his stage name. However, the rapper prefers his close friends to call him by his real name. During the 2024 MTV VMAs, Taylor Swift referred to him as “Austin” when they won the Best Collaboration award for their duet “Fortnight.”

Though she portrayed Lilly on *Modern Family* under the name Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, the actress changed her moniker to Frances Anderson to mark a new era as a musician. “Frances is actually part of my legal name—it’s my middle name, and it’s after my mom’s old family friend,” she explained in a 2025 E! News interview. “I thought, one, it was a bit shorter than ‘Aubrey Anderson-Emmons.’ I do have a long, hyphenated last name.”

The *Summer House* star shocked Bravo fans by revealing that his legally given first name isn’t actually Carl. “My I.D. and my passport—my first name is William,” Carl, who has appeared on the reality show for all nine seasons, told PopViewers in August 2025. “So, my middle name is Carl, but I’ve always, since day one, been called Carl.”

Sterling K. Brown went by his middle name Kelby until he was a teenager. “My dad’s name is Sterling Brown Jr., my grandfather is Sterling Brown Sr.,” he said during an April 2025 appearance on *The Kelly Clarkson Show*. “I wanted my own name and it felt like Sterling was an old man’s name.” But years after his dad died from a heart attack, the *This Is Us* alum decided to revert back to his first name as a way to honor his father.

“Because he passed away when I was 10, by the time I turned 16 and I hadn’t heard his name for five, five-and-a-half years,” he continued, “I was like, ‘I kinda just want to hear that name again.’ So I asked people to call me Sterling.”

Kat Dennings adopted a stage name at age 9, years before she made her official onstage acting debut on a 2000 episode of *Sex and the City*. The *2 Broke Girls* alum told Kylie Kelce on the March 13, 2025 episode of her podcast *Not Gonna Lie With Kylie Kelce* that she didn’t think her real name should “be displayed on a poster.”

The actress drew inspiration for her stage name from Christina Ricci’s character Kat in the film *Casper* as well as the surname of Janine Denni, the French wife of late *The Black Cauldron* author Lloyd Alexander—a writer she said was her mother’s best friend.

For more than three decades, Cher was made to believe that her legal first name was Cherilyn. It wasn’t until the late ’70s, when she obtained her birth certificate in order to change her full name to just Cher, that she discovered she had been registered as “Cheryl.” In her 2024 memoir, *Cher: The Memoir, Part One*, the pop icon recalled her mom Georgia Holt’s reaction to this discovery.

She said her mother, who gave birth to her at age 19, responded, “Let me look at that!” and then, recalling her postpartum experience, added, “I was only a teenager, and I was in a lot of pain. Give me a break.”

Shania Twain shared the origin story of her stage name during an appearance on Apple Music’s *Home Now Radio*:

“In short, I was born Eilleen Regina Edwards, and then I was adopted and I became Eilleen Regina Twain. Then I became a professional singer and I needed a stage name that sounded a little less like my grandmother’s name, because I’m named after my grandmother, both my grandmothers, Eilleen and Regina. I think, in my mind, I was just not really wanting to be called my grandmother’s name onstage, so I decided to change it to Shania Twain. I met somebody with the name Shania, thought it was beautiful, and Shania Twain was born.”

The Night When Bob Dylan Went Electric: Watch Him Play “Maggie’s Farm” at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965

The phrase “when Dylan went electric” once carried as much weight in pop culture history as “the fall of the Berlin Wall” carries in, well, history. Both events have receded into what feels like the distant past, but in the early 1960s, they likely seemed equally unlikely to many a serious Bob Dylan fan in the folk scene. They also seemed equally consequential.

To understand the culture of the decade, we must understand the import of Dylan’s appearance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965, backed by Mike Bloomfield and other members of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band.

The death of rock and roll in the ’50s is often told through the lens of tragedy, but there was also anger, disgust, and mass disaffection. The Payola scandal had an impact, as did Elvis joining the army and Little Richard’s return to religion. Rock and roll was broken, tamed, and turned into commercial fodder. Simply put, it wasn’t cool at all, man, and even the Beatles couldn’t save it singlehandedly.

Their arrival on U.S. shores is mythologized as music history Normandy—and has been credited with inspiring countless numbers of musicians—but without Dylan and the blues artists he imitated, things would very much have gone otherwise.

In the early ’60s, Dylan and the Beatles’ “respective musical constituencies were indeed perceived as inhabiting two separate subcultural worlds,” writes Jonathan Gould in *Can’t Buy Me Love: The Beatles, Britain, and America*.

“Dylan’s core audience was comprised of young people emerging from adolescence—college kids with artistic or intellectual leanings, a dawning political and social idealism, and a mildly bohemian style. The Beatles’ core audience, by contrast, was comprised of veritable ‘teenyboppers’—kids in high school or grade school whose lives were totally wrapped up in the commercialized popular culture of television, radio, pop records, fan magazines, and teen fashion. They were seen as idolaters, not idealists.”

To evoke anything resembling the commercial pablum of Beatlemania, and at Newport, no less, spoke of treason to folk authenticity. Some called out “Where’s Ringo?” Others called him “Judas.”

Dylan’s set “would go down as one of the most divisive concerts ever”—and that’s saying a lot—“putting the worlds of both folk and rock in temporary identity crisis,” Michael Madden writes at *Consequence of Sound*.

The former folk hero accomplished this in all of three songs: “Maggie’s Farm,” “Like a Rolling Stone,” and “Phantom Engineer,” an early take on “It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry.”

Pete Seeger famously “threw a furious tantrum” upon hearing the first few bars of “Maggie’s Farm,” though he’s since said he was upset at the sound quality.

The moment was defining—and Dylan apparently decided to do it on a whim after hearing Alan Lomax insult the Paul Butterfield Band, who were giving a workshop at the festival.

He came back onstage afterward to play two acoustic songs for the appreciative audience who remained, unfazed by the vehemence of half the crowd’s reaction to his earlier set.

Yet the revolution to return rock to its folk and blues roots was already underway. Within six months of meeting Dylan in 1964, Gould writes, “John Lennon would be making records on which he openly imitated Dylan’s nasal drone, brittle strum, and introspective vocal persona.” (Dylan also introduced him to cannabis.)

In 1965, “the distinctions between the folk and rock audiences would have nearly evaporated.” The two met in the middle.

“The Beatles’ audience, in keeping with the way of the world, would be showing signs of growing up,” while Dylan’s fans showed signs of “growing down, as hundreds of thousands of folkies in their late teens and early twenties” rediscovered “the ethos of their adolescent years.” They also discovered electric blues.

Newport shows Dylan accelerating the transition, and also signified the arrival of the great electric blues-rock guitarists, in the form of the inimitable Mike Bloomfield, an invading force all his own, who inspired a generation with his licks on “Like a Rolling Stone” and on the absolute classic Paul Butterfield Blues Band debut album, released in The Year Dylan Went Electric.

How NBA 2K uses music to tap into basketball culture

NBA 2K26 Season 2 Brings Iconic Songs from Past Games to the Soundtrack

NBA 2K26 Season 2 will add iconic songs from previous 2K games to its soundtrack, hitting fans with a dose of nostalgia while showcasing the series’ history of delivering memorable tunes for players to enjoy while hooping. I recently caught up with David Kelley, the Director of Global Partnerships & Licensing for the NBA 2K series, to discuss his team’s work in assembling the perfect basketball soundtrack. The following questions and answers were exchanged over email between myself and a representative for David Kelley.

Shacknews: What’s the process like when it comes to selecting which songs make the cut for a new NBA 2K game? Do you ever run into issues getting licenses for songs that you want?

David Kelley: We approach every soundtrack as a reflection of both basketball and culture. Our 2K Music team, composed of myself, Richie Menchavez, and Simon Weedn, all almost literally eat, sleep, and breathe music to build something that feels true to the moment and to our community.

We all come from different walks within the music industry—artists, DJs, managers, music supervisors, live events, studio engineers, composers—so we are able to bring a really well-rounded and unique perspective. We work closely with our development team at Visual Concepts to find new, dynamic ways music can enhance the NBA 2K experience.

With additional support from Take-Two’s world-class music team, we’re able to tap into incredible expertise across the board. Of course, licensing is a huge part of that process. We work with incredible partners like Fox Sound Studios and have long-standing relationships with labels, publishers, and artists around the world.

There are always songs we wish we could include that, for one reason or another, don’t clear in time but that’s part of the fun and challenge. The passion our team has for music keeps us pushing until the soundtrack feels right.

Shacknews: The popularity of some songs is short-lived. Are there ever any concerns that players will grow tired of certain tracks, particularly ones tied to viral trends or cultural moments?

Kelley: That’s definitely something we think about, which is why NBA 2K’s live service model has been a game-changer for us. We refresh the soundtrack every six weeks, which allows us to stay up-to-date with what’s happening in music right now.

Shacknews: There’s an old Drake lyric that goes, “I swear sports and music are so synonymous, ’cause we want to be them, and they want to be us.” Can you talk about the relationship between music and basketball, and how it informs your work on NBA 2K?

Kelley: That lyric nails it. Basketball and music are indelibly linked. The culture around the game goes hand-in-hand with the sound that fuels it. Players walk into the arena with headphones on, artists sit courtside at games, etc. — it’s all one ecosystem of creativity.

When we’re building the NBA 2K soundtrack, we think about how a track feels in that context. Music amplifies those emotional beats of the game, and our job is to make sure every track supports that energy. NBA 2K26 Season 2’s new Greatest Hits soundtrack really captures that philosophy.

It doesn’t matter when a song was released, who’s behind it, or where they are from; if the song captures the energy that resonates with our community, we want our audience to hear it in NBA 2K.

Shacknews: There’s a lot of nostalgia wrapped up in the 2K soundtracks of years past. How many of the “greatest hits” are you bringing back for Season 2 of NBA 2K26? What songs immediately jumped out as ones you had to bring back?

Kelley: We’re bringing back a mix of iconic tracks that have defined the NBA 2K experience over the years. Without giving away the full list yet, there are some unmistakable records from both classic and newer artists.

The selection process was guided heavily by community feedback. Fans have been incredibly vocal about which songs they still associate with certain eras of NBA 2K, and that passion made it easy to see what belonged on the Greatest Hits list.

This season really is a celebration and a chance to honor the music that shaped the game’s identity while introducing those classics to a whole new generation of players.

Ryukyu Opera Premieres With Tale of Kingdom’s King and Queen

Composed by Urasoe native Arakatsu, the opera masterfully blends traditional Ryukyuan performing arts—such as classical dance and folk songs—with Western orchestral music, creating a unique cultural fusion.

Spectators praised not only the powerful vocal performances and live orchestration but also the inclusion of elements like karate demonstrations and traditional island rituals, which deepened the production’s local flavor.

“I was amazed by how many traditional arts were woven into the story from singing and dance to karate,” said one audience member. “It was both fun and deeply moving.”

Another attendee added, “I saw the production last year too, and I’m always impressed. It’s a kind of opera that could only exist in Okinawa, and the love between the two leads was so powerful.”

As the final notes of the live orchestra echoed through the theater, the audience responded with thunderous applause. Many praised the work as a celebration of Okinawa’s “chanpuru” spirit—the blending of cultures—and a powerful new expression of tradition through contemporary art.

“Traditional arts combined with new forms of expression make them even more compelling,” said one commentator, summing up the mood of a night when history, music, and emotion came together on stage.
