Managing HR through data, not feelings

Human resources (HR) management, which focuses on people, relationships, and culture, has traditionally been viewed as the “soft side” of business. While these aspects remain crucial, modern organizations demand more than just intuition.

Today, senior executives are seeking concrete evidence that HR efforts deliver direct financial benefits. This is where the importance of numbers comes into play. By leveraging data and analytics, HR can demonstrate its impact on the bottom line and support strategic decision-making.

Man with No Medical Expertise Gives Pregnant Women Pain Advice

This week, Emily Bazelon, John Dickerson, and David Plotz discuss how Donald Trump is using the powerful mechanisms of government prosecution to reverse-engineer crimes supposedly committed by his enemies. They also cover his diatribe against Tylenol at the disastrous press conference on autism, as well as the echoes of past Red Scares in today’s free speech climate.

Joining the conversation is historian Beverly Gage, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning *G-Man: J. Edgar Hoover and the Making of the American Century*, who provides insight into these historical parallels.

Bereaved Siblings of Fallen Soldiers Express Lack of Government Support to Knesset Panel

The siblings of fallen soldiers have voiced their need for increased government support, similar to the benefits provided to widows and parents of fallen soldiers. They emphasize that their grief and sacrifices also warrant recognition and assistance from the state.

On Memorial Day, bereaved families, friends, and Israeli soldiers visit the graves of fallen soldiers to honor their memory. This solemn commemoration takes place at Mount Herzl Military Cemetery in Jerusalem, which serves as the central site for remembering fallen Israeli soldiers and victims of terror.

MP Human Rights Commission To Remain Vacant After Acting Chairman Rajiv Tandon’s Tenure Ends On September 26

**Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): MP Human Rights Commission Faces Vacancy Amid Growing Backlog**

The Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission (MPHRC) will have no members available to hear public grievances starting Saturday, as the tenure of acting chairman Rajiv Tandon ends on Friday. The post of chairman has remained vacant for an extended period, and with no members currently in the commission, public complaints risk going unheard.

In response to this situation, the state government has scheduled a meeting at 4 pm on September 29 to discuss new appointments to the commission. A committee responsible for these appointments includes the Chief Minister, Home Minister, Leader of the Opposition, and the Speaker. This committee will consider the appointment of the new chairman as well as two additional members.

Sources indicate that AP Singh, the Principal Secretary of the Vidhan Sabha, is a leading candidate for one of the commission’s member positions. Singh’s tenure at the Vidhan Sabha ends on September 30, and since he is not receiving an extension, he may be appointed to the Human Rights Commission.

While the committee may select the chairman and two members, the final number of appointments will depend on the committee’s decisions.

**Over 4,600 Complaints Pending**

The MP Human Rights Commission currently has over 4,600 pending complaints. Since the end of Manohar Mamtani’s tenure as chairman, no successor has been appointed. Rajiv Tandon, initially a member of the commission, was designated as acting chairman, but with him being the sole commission member, the backlog of cases has continued to grow.

The upcoming appointments are crucial to ensure that public grievances are addressed promptly and effectively by the MPHRC.

Ladakh Violence: 4 Dead In Protests, Calls For Dialogue And Non-Violence Amid Statehood Demand

The violence that shook Leh on Wednesday is unfortunate. No grievance, however genuine, can justify the loss of four lives, the torching of public property, or the injury of dozens of police personnel and protesters. What Ladakh witnessed was tragic—and avoidable.

There is no denying that the people of Ladakh are exercised over their demand for statehood. This is not a sudden outburst but a long-standing aspiration, dating back to the days of Sheikh Abdullah. When Ladakh was carved out of Jammu and Kashmir in 2019 and made a Union Territory, many saw it as only a halfway house to full statehood.

The Centre has indeed invested heavily in Ladakh’s infrastructure. Roads, communications, and basic facilities have improved significantly. Yet, for many Ladakhis, development is no substitute for political empowerment. Their demand is rooted in a sense of cultural identity and local control over land, jobs, and resources.

The question that remains is whether a sparsely populated region of 300,000 can realistically sustain a separate state. Leaders, past and present, have grappled with this. The late Kushak Bakula, the undisputed leader of Ladakhi Buddhists, did not extend his support to the idea of full statehood.

More recently, activist-engineer Sonam Wangchuk, whose innovative work brought him national recognition, has emerged as the face of the demand. His hunger strike gave visibility to the cause but also coincided with a disturbing outbreak of violence.

It is for the investigating agencies to determine whether he provoked the mob or whether frustration among unemployed youth spilled over into anger. He has denied responsibility and appealed for peace. Yet, history reminds us that true leadership requires the foresight to sense when passions are running beyond control. Mahatma Gandhi himself had called off agitations when they threatened to turn violent.

The tragedy should, therefore, serve as a sobering reminder: violence destroys more than it builds. The burning of offices and vehicles, the deaths of young men, and the tarnishing of an essentially peaceful movement will only make resolution harder.

Ladakh’s strength has always been in its composite culture—where Buddhists and Muslims, despite differing past aspirations, now speak in one voice for dignity and rights. That unity must not be allowed to fracture under the weight of anger.

Dialogue remains the only way forward. The committees already set up and the fresh round of talks scheduled should be pursued in good faith. Leaders must ensure that their followers do not stray from peaceful means. At the same time, citizens must recognise that negotiations, however slow, are more productive than street violence.

Ladakh is a land of unmatched beauty, strategic importance, and peace-loving people. Its future must rest on mutual trust, patient dialogue, and non-violence—the true path to peace and progress.

Maharashtra rains: 790 rescued in Solapur floods by local administration, army

In the wake of severe flooding caused by torrential rains from September 21 to 23, several villages in Solapur District, particularly in Madha Taluka, were left inundated and in urgent need of assistance.

Responding to a call from the NDRF and local administration, a team from the RESQ Charitable Trust-Sahyadri Vanyajeev Rakshanarth Samajik Sanstha (SVRSS), working in close coordination with the Indian Army, the tehsildar, and the local MLA, launched large-scale rescue operations to safeguard human lives and animals stranded by the floodwaters. The operations commenced at dawn on Tuesday.

Over the course of the mission, approximately 790 citizens were successfully evacuated to safe locations. Among those rescued were vulnerable individuals, including a three-week-old infant, elderly citizens, and people suffering from chronic illnesses. Importantly, no human lives were lost during these floods.

Recognising that floods also pose a serious threat to animal life, the team extended its mission to include veterinary-supported evacuations. Nearly 90 animals, including cows, buffaloes, calves, and dogs, were rescued and relocated to safety. Tragically, hundreds of livestock that could not be untied in time perished in the floods. However, all the remaining animals were successfully moved to safer ground once the team reached them.

The operations were not without challenges. Even under the cover of darkness, a dramatic night rescue in Kedav village led to 13 citizens being brought out safely from life-threatening conditions.

While lives were saved, the devastation has left a trail of destruction: several families have lost their homes, and hundreds of animals were lost to the deluge.

The operation was executed by dedicated RESQ-SVRSS team members, including Sagar Dahimbekar, Prayag Bamgude, Sanket More, Sachin Yevale, Aadesh Patekar, Paresh Mahabale, Ashutosh Shinde, Shubham Singh, Dr. Satvik Pathak, Dr. Anisha Bhisey, and Suresh Ghadge, whose coordinated efforts helped ensure the success of this life-saving mission.

Mumbai Fraud: Builder Duo Duped Of ₹1.85 Crore In Fake ₹50 Crore Loan Scam; Vinoba Bhave Nagar Police Register 2 FIRs

**Mumbai Construction Businessmen Duped of Rs 1.85 Crore in Elaborate Loan Fraud**

In a shocking case of financial fraud, two construction businessmen have been cheated of a total Rs 1.85 crore by scammers posing as loan arrangers promising Rs 50 crore loans for their businesses. The Vinoba Bhave Nagar police have registered two separate FIRs and launched detailed investigations into the matter.

### First Case: Advocate and Brother-in-Law Defrauded of Rs 1.37 Crore

Advocate Prasad Gurunath Shelke (44), a resident of Shirgaon Yadavnagar, Badlapur East, filed a complaint alleging that he and his brother-in-law, Avinash Bhoir, were duped of Rs 1.37 crore.

According to Shelke’s statement, in 2023, Bhoir was seeking a substantial loan to expand his construction business. Shelke approached his friend, Atul Bhopi, who connected him with Khalid Khan, proprietor of S.K.K. Builders and Developers. Khan claimed he could arrange large loans secured only by post-dated cheques, without requiring immediate collateral.

In June 2023, Shelke and Bhoir met Khan, who offered to secure a loan of Rs 50 crore but demanded 1.25% of the loan amount as “stamp duty” charges. Following this, Rs 62.5 lakh was paid in July 2023.

Khan also collected their PAN cards, Aadhaar cards, and cancelled cheques, stating that the loan process would be initiated through Central KYC and the funds credited shortly. He reassured them that the transaction would be legal and under proper RBI approval.

However, by August 2023, no loan had materialized. Upon inquiry, Khan promised the funds would be released by December and requested additional payments to expedite the process. Trusting him, Shelke made further payments into bank accounts linked to Khalid Khan, Rinku Rajguru, and Nimit Digra of Nimit Exim House. A further Rs 75 lakh was paid in cash, bringing the total amount lost to Rs 1.37 crore.

When the loan remained undisbursed, Shelke grew suspicious and filed an official complaint. The police have since named Khalid Khan, Nimit Digra, and Gurudeep Singh alias Rinku Singh Rajput as accused in this financial scam.

### Second Case: Pune Builder Loses Rs 76 Lakh in Similar Fraud

In a separate but similar incident, Pune-based builder Arimardan Ramsumer Singh (43), who runs AMS Buildtech Pvt. Ltd., was allegedly cheated of Rs 76 lakh by Khalid Khan and Nimit Digra.

Singh was introduced to Nimit Digra in August 2023 by a business acquaintance, Awadh Kishore Thakur. Digra presented himself as Khalid Khan’s manager and arranged a meeting with Khan. Khan claimed he could secure a Rs 50 crore loan from SKK International Builders and Developers, located at Premier Residency, Kohinoor City, Kurla (West), Mumbai.

Khan demanded a 2% processing fee for the loan. When Singh stated he could not pay the full amount upfront, he was asked to pay 50% initially.

On September 21, 2023, Singh transferred Rs 11 lakh via RTGS into the finance company’s account. Later, on October 6, he issued an ICICI Bank cheque worth Rs 65 lakh, which was deposited into Nimit Exim House’s account.

Despite these payments, Singh never received the loan. When he demanded a refund, Khan delayed and dodged the repayment. Singh deposited a cheque given by Khan, but it bounced. After repeated follow-ups, Singh managed to recover Rs 28 lakh, but Rs 48 lakh remained unpaid.

Frustrated and convinced he was defrauded, Singh filed an official complaint with the Vinoba Bhave Nagar Police Station against Khalid Khan and Nimit Digra.

### Police Action and Investigation

The Vinoba Bhave Nagar police have registered two separate FIRs under Sections 316(2), 318(4), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) related to these fraud cases and are actively investigating the matter.
