‘Dependence mustn’t turn into compulsion’: RSS chief amid US tariffs

**‘Dependence mustn’t turn into compulsion’: RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat on US Tariffs**

*By Chanshimla Varah | Oct 02, 2025, 10:46 AM*

At the Vijayadashami event in Nagpur, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat addressed the recent tariff policy imposed by the United States on Indian goods. He stated that the US’s move was primarily “done keeping in mind the interest of their own.”

Bhagwat emphasized the reality of global interdependence but cautioned that it should never turn into compulsion. He urged India to focus on *swadeshi* (self-reliance) as the only viable path forward. “Our harmony must be our own,” he remarked, underlining the importance of national self-sufficiency.

**Regional Stability: Concerns Over Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh**

The RSS chief also commented on the recent unrest in neighboring countries such as Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. He warned that such violent disturbances could invite foreign interference and lead to chaos.

“Violent uprisings only lead to anarchy,” Bhagwat said, adding that forces intent on creating disorder in Bharat are active both inside and outside the country. He distinguished between democratic movements, which bring change, and violent revolts, which do not. Reflecting on history, he noted, “France rose against its king and Napoleon became emperor. So many so-called socialist movements happened; all these socialist countries are now capitalist.”

**National Harmony: Response to the Recent Attack in Pahalgam**

Addressing India’s rich diversity, Mohan Bhagwat stressed the need to embrace differences within the framework of law. He condemned actions that provoke communities and called for fair administration.

“The administration must act fairly, but the youth must also stay alert and intervene if needed. The grammar of anarchy needs to be stopped,” he asserted. He further emphasized that an “us” versus “them” mentality is unacceptable in a united India.

**Economic Focus: Supporting Swadeshi and Prime Minister Modi’s Push for Local Products**

The call for self-reliance echoes Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeals encouraging Indians to buy products made in India. Modi highlighted the importance of recognizing and supporting locally crafted goods produced through the hard work of the country’s youth.

“Often, we don’t even know if the comb in our pocket is made in India or abroad. We should buy products that are Made in India, crafted through the hard work of our country’s sons and daughters,” Modi said in one of his speeches.

As India navigates international economic challenges and regional uncertainties, leaders continue to stress the importance of self-reliance, national harmony, and democratic change driven by peaceful means.

‘Dependence mustn’t turn into compulsion’: RSS chief amid US tariffs

**‘Dependence Mustn’t Turn into Compulsion’: RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat on US Tariffs**

*By Chanshimla Varah | October 2, 2025*

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has responded to the recent tariff policies imposed by the United States on Indian goods. Speaking at the Vijayadashami event in Nagpur, Bhagwat remarked that the US tariff measures are primarily designed to safeguard their own national interests.

He emphasized the reality of global interdependence but cautioned that such reliance should never amount to compulsion. “We must move towards swadeshi and self-reliance; there is no alternative. Our harmony must be our own,” he stated.

**Regional Stability: Concerns Over Neighboring Countries**

Addressing recent unrest in neighboring nations such as Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, Bhagwat warned that such disturbances could invite foreign interference. He stressed that violent uprisings only lead to anarchy and instability.

“Those who seek to create disturbances in Bharat are active both inside and outside our country,” he said. Highlighting the distinction between democratic movements and violent revolts, Bhagwat recalled historical examples: “Democratic movements bring change; violent uprisings don’t. France rose against its king and Napoleon became emperor. So many so-called socialist movements happened, and all these socialist countries are now capitalist.”

**National Harmony: Embracing Diversity and Fair Administration**

Speaking on India’s diverse social fabric, the RSS chief underlined the importance of embracing differences within the bounds of law. He condemned acts that provoke communal tensions and urged for fair and impartial administration.

“The administration must act fairly, but the youth must also stay alert and intervene if needed. The grammar of anarchy needs to be stopped,” he added, condemning the ‘us vs them’ mentality as unacceptable.

**Economic Focus: The Drive Towards ‘Make in India’**

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent calls to promote swadeshi products and self-sufficiency align with Bhagwat’s message. Modi has urged Indians to reduce dependency on foreign-made goods and consciously choose products made in India.

“Often, we don’t even know if the comb in our pocket is made in India or abroad. We should buy products that are made in India, crafted through the hard work of our country’s youth—products that carry the sweat of our sons and daughters,” the Prime Minister said in one of his speeches.

The emphasis on self-reliance and indigenous production by both the RSS chief and the Prime Minister underscores a growing national narrative that advocates economic independence and cultural harmony amid global challenges.

Malaysia’s data centre pioneer, Basis Bay takes it to the next level with its “eco-premium” Tier-4 DC

**Basis Bay’s Green Commitment Predates Today’s Mega Trend of Sustainability**

Engineered to Tier-4 standards, the new Cyberjaya centre ensures no single point of failure.

Basis Bay is putting the finishing touches on a new eco-premium, Tier-4 infrastructure, world-class data centre in Cyberjaya, slated to go live in October. Speaking at the MDX Summit 2025 fireside on 17 September, Dinesh Manoharan, Data Centre Project Lead at Basis Bay, outlined three core value propositions: fault-tolerant resilience, designed-in sustainability, and the critical guarantee of data sovereignty in a single Malaysian-owned facility.

### Where Uptime is the Baseline, Not a KPI

Every minute of downtime hurts, but for financial services, insurers, and government workloads—sectors where Basis Bay has nearly two decades of experience—it can be existential. This is why the new Cyberjaya data centre is engineered with no single point of failure, mirroring Tier-4 design principles where each critical system has a full redundant pair.

“It may be Tier-4, yet our data centres are built above and beyond the industry standards,” said Dinesh, adding, “Maximum uptime isn’t a target; it’s table stakes.”

He was quick to share a remarkable record: since 1996, Basis Bay has not lost a single client due to a service-level agreement (SLA) breach—a bar it intends to carry into its new generation of facilities.

### Green by Design, Not by Afterthought

Basis Bay’s green commitment predates today’s mega trend of sustainability. Proof lies in the fact that in 2009, it built Asia’s first purpose-built green data centre in Cyberjaya. That site, and the experience of running it for almost two decades for demanding world-class clients, led to what Dinesh calls an eco-premium approach—merging environmental considerations into form, fabric, and operations from day one.

The new Cyberjaya DC2 extends Basis Bay’s green DNA under an eco-premium banner. Clarifying what this means, Dinesh explains:

“When we say eco-premium, it is the amount of effort and thought process that is put in before even building. That shows up in EIA-led site planning, transplanting trees, sourcing local, lower-impact materials, and hydrology features.”

Dinesh is specific about cooling logic: “We have a bathtub rooftop design that drops shadow on the roof, which enhances cooling. Every degree Celsius of cooling power that you save translates into energy saved, and energy saved is income saved.”

Not surprisingly, the design input for the new facility involved the best consultants—local and global—with 17 consultants engaged.

### Key Highlights Include:
– A unique bathtub rooftop that channels rainwater to improve cooling efficiency.
– A BioSwell pond to support local ecosystems.
– Relocating trees and flora during construction to preserve local biodiversity.
– Sourcing eco-friendly building materials from local suppliers.

“It’s about designing with the environment in mind, not just the data,” he explained. “In today’s world, both matter equally.”

### Selling White Space is Not Basis Bay’s Game

Plenty of data centre providers sell white space. That is not Basis Bay’s approach. Instead, the company focuses on pushing its service layer as the differentiator.

A 24/7 ‘Smart Hands’ team acts as an on-site extension of client operations, handling installs, swaps, and triage without waiting for off-site engineers. This is reinforced by preventive lifecycle management, which aims to keep assets running past vendor end-of-life labels through checks and maintenance cycles.

### Sovereignty by Design

With global hyperscalers expanding across ASEAN, control over where data lives has re-entered board agendas. Dinesh stresses that Basis Bay’s facilities are Malaysian-owned and operated, offering enterprises and public sector clients a sovereign alternative with a single point of accountability across design, build, operations, and management.

“Everything is done by us in-house,” he emphasized.

Its value proposition is clear: “We are offering world-class compliance certainty, reduced supply-chain ambiguity, and data residency on home soil.”

In other words, one accountable Malaysian owner-operator for design, build, operations, and facilities management.

Mexican authorities investigate vigilante killings of 5 in remote community

Authorities believe residents of a remote community in the mountains of southern Mexico’s Oaxaca state beat five people to death and burned their bodies, the state prosecutor’s office said on Wednesday.

Oaxaca state authorities and the National Guard arrived in the community of Llano Amarillo in Santa Maria Texcatitlan on Tuesday, searching for five missing individuals. They discovered a burned-out vehicle containing the remains of five people, according to a statement from the Oaxaca state prosecutor’s office.

Officials believe the killings occurred on Monday, but forensic investigators were still working to identify the remains.

Preliminary information suggests that the five victims had arrived in the mountain community—located about 125 miles (200 km) from the state capital—on Monday to collect on a high-interest loan from a woman, the prosecutor’s office reported.

Such vigilante killings occasionally occur in Mexico, particularly in remote areas with limited government presence. In March, a mob killed and burned a man who worked as a clown after accusing him of child abuse in another Oaxacan town. Last year, a mob killed a woman accused of being involved in the kidnapping and killing of a girl in Taxco, Guerrero.

A 2019 report from the governmental National Human Rights Commission—the most recent available—described these killings as the most serious expression of public distrust toward authorities and the widespread impunity in the country. The report recorded 271 vigilante killings in 2018 alone.

Goldy Brar gangsters, hired to kill comedian Munawar Faruqui, arrested

**Goldy Brar Gangsters Hired to Kill Comedian Munawar Faruqui Arrested**

*By Chanshimla Varah | October 2, 2025, 11:19 AM*

Two alleged members of the notorious Rohit Godara-Goldy Brar-Virender Charan gang were arrested in Delhi on Thursday for allegedly planning to murder stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui.

The suspects, identified as Rahul and Sahil, hail from Panipat and Bhiwani in Haryana. According to police investigations, they were acting under the orders of foreign-based gangster Rohit Godara, who is known to collaborate with Goldy Brar and Virender Charan.

### Investigation Details: Suspects Conducted Recce in Mumbai and Bengaluru

Authorities revealed that the suspects had conducted reconnaissance operations in Mumbai and Bengaluru to track Munawar Faruqui’s movements. Faruqui is not only a prominent comedian but also a popular reality TV star, having won *Bigg Boss* in 2024 and boasting 14.2 million Instagram followers.

Of note, Rahul was already wanted in connection with a triple murder case that occurred in Yamunanagar, Haryana, in December 2024.

### Arrest Operation: How Police Nabbed the Suspects

The police acted swiftly after receiving a tip-off about the presence of the suspected shooters near New Friends Colony. A trap was set up on Kalindi Kunj-Pushta Road, where a suspicious motorcycle was observed around 3:00 AM.

When officers signaled the suspects to stop, they opened fire, triggering an exchange of gunfire. Both Rahul and Sahil sustained gunshot injuries to their legs before being apprehended.

### Evidence and Aftermath

Both injured suspects were immediately rushed to a hospital for treatment. During the operation, the police seized the firearms used in the encounter along with the motorcycle.

This incident comes against a backdrop of increased attacks on celebrities in the region. Just weeks earlier, on September 12, two gunmen on a motorcycle fired shots outside actress Disha Patani’s residence in Bareilly. The Rohit Godara-Goldy Brar gang claimed responsibility for that attack as well.

Authorities continue to investigate the gang’s activities as security measures around public figures are heightened.

Zubeen Garg death case: Manager and organiser held in Delhi

Zubeen Garg’s manager Siddhartha Sharma and festival chief organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta were arrested from Delhi on Wednesday morning in connection with the singer’s death in Singapore last month, Assam Police confirmed.

The duo has been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, criminal conspiracy, and causing death by negligence. Following their arrest, they were brought to Guwahati and produced before the Kamrup Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court, which sent them to 14 days of police custody.

Since the courts were closed for Durga Puja, the hearing took place at the residence of the judge.

Special DGP (CID) Munna Prasad Gupta stated that investigations into the singer’s death will be conducted in accordance with the law. A lookout notice through Interpol had already been issued against both individuals. Based on this notice, immigration authorities detained Mahanta when he arrived at Delhi airport from Singapore and handed him over to Assam Police.

Regarding Sharma, Gupta said, “We tracked his location to Delhi and Rajasthan. Last night, we located him near the Delhi-Haryana border and arrested him.”

The state government recently banned Mahanta, the chief organiser of the North East Festival — which Garg had attended in Singapore before his death — from holding any function or event in Assam.

Zubeen Garg’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, expressed her full faith in the investigating team and hoped that they would soon uncover what exactly happened.

The Assam government had earlier constituted a 10-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the singer’s death in Singapore, which allegedly occurred due to drowning on September 19.

Russian President Putin set to visit India in early December

Ahead of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s upcoming visit to India, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is scheduled to travel to New Delhi next month to finalize the finer details of the presidential trip. Putin last visited India in 2021, and preparations are now underway for the next summit between the two nations.

Sources indicate that prior to Putin’s arrival, India and Russia are expected to hold a meeting under the framework of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Military and Military-Technical Cooperation (IRIGC-M&MTC). This meeting will focus on advancing the various dimensions of bilateral cooperation.

At the annual India-Russia summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Putin are anticipated to deliberate on further expanding the “Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership” that defines the close ties between the two countries. While official dates for Putin’s visit have not yet been announced, the discussions are likely to emphasize deepening collaboration in key sectors such as defense and security, trade, and energy.

India and Russia have a longstanding mechanism where their leaders meet annually to review the full spectrum of bilateral relations. To date, 22 annual summit meetings have taken place, alternately hosted in India and Russia. The most recent summit was held in Moscow in July last year, when PM Modi visited for the annual meeting.

Russia has been a steadfast and time-tested partner for India, serving as a cornerstone of New Delhi’s foreign policy. Reports suggest that India is considering procuring additional batches of the S-400 air defense missile systems from Russia, especially after these weapons played a significant role during Operation Sindoor.

In October 2018, India signed a USD 5 billion deal with Russia for five units of the S-400 missile system, despite warnings from the US administration at the time about potential sanctions. So far, Russia has supplied three of the five ordered S-400 regiments, with the remaining two expected to be delivered by 2026. However, the delivery schedule has faced delays due to Russia’s ongoing conflict with Ukraine.

Just a month ago, PM Modi and President Putin held talks on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) annual summit in Tianjin, China. During this meeting, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening strategic ties. This encounter occurred shortly after the US doubled tariffs on Indian goods to 50%, including a 25% additional duty linked specifically to India’s purchase of Russian crude oil.

India has defended its procurement of Russian crude, maintaining that its energy strategy is driven by national interest and prevailing market dynamics.

In his televised opening remarks at the summit meeting, PM Modi welcomed President Putin warmly, saying, “140 crore Indians are eagerly waiting to welcome you in India this December.” He emphasized that this anticipation reflects the depth and scope of the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between the two nations.

Modi further noted, “India and Russia have always stood shoulder-to-shoulder even in the most difficult situations.” He underlined that close cooperation between the two countries remains important not only for their own people but also for fostering global peace, stability, and prosperity.

In their forthcoming summit talks, both leaders are also expected to deliberate on the ongoing Ukraine conflict, reflecting the significance of this issue in their bilateral discussions.

Stay tuned for updates on the official dates and outcomes of the India-Russia annual summit.
