Obituary: Arnold Frederick McLean

**Arnold Frederick McLean**

Lewiston — Arnold Frederick McLean, born July 19, 1935, in Woodstock, New Brunswick, was called home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, following a time of prayer and cherished hymns.

Arnold was the loving husband of Mary (Stevens) McLean, with whom he shared a lifetime of faith and unwavering commitment to family. Together, Arnold and Mary built their lives on the foundation of Scripture, devoting themselves to raising their children in the knowledge of God’s grace and truth. Their home was a place of prayer, hospitality, and joy—a reflection of the deep faith that guided every decision and season of life.

He was a proud and loving father to seven children: daughter Julie (McLean) Stewart and husband Tim; son Carl McLean and wife Donna; son Paul McLean; son Joel McLean; daughter Laurie Allen and husband Chris; son Philip McLean and wife Amy; and daughter Sharon Sterling and husband Allen. Arnold was also a cherished grandfather and great-grandfather to many, each of whom brought him immense joy and pride. His legacy lives on through the generations he nurtured with wisdom, kindness, and a spirited sense of fun.

Arnold was predeceased by his father Arthur McLean and mother Violette (Tompkins) McLean; sisters Norma and Marie; and brothers Willard and Merlin. He is survived by his sister Verna and brothers Glenn and Harold.

Arnold’s life was a testimony to the redeeming power of Christ. He believed in the promise of eternal life through faith in Jesus and lived each day with the assurance that his salvation was secure. His favorite verse, John 14:6—“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’”—shaped his outlook and brought him peace in his final days.

He will be remembered not only for his vibrant personality and unwavering devotion but also for the way he pointed others to the hope found in the gospel. His life was a reflection of God’s grace, and his passing is not the end, but the beginning of eternal joy in the presence of the Lord.

A service and reception in celebration of Arnold’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 20, at Riverside Drive Baptist Church in Auburn, Maine.

How NBA 2K uses music to tap into basketball culture

NBA 2K26 Season 2 Brings Iconic Songs from Past Games to the Soundtrack

NBA 2K26 Season 2 will add iconic songs from previous 2K games to its soundtrack, hitting fans with a dose of nostalgia while showcasing the series’ history of delivering memorable tunes for players to enjoy while hooping. I recently caught up with David Kelley, the Director of Global Partnerships & Licensing for the NBA 2K series, to discuss his team’s work in assembling the perfect basketball soundtrack. The following questions and answers were exchanged over email between myself and a representative for David Kelley.

Shacknews: What’s the process like when it comes to selecting which songs make the cut for a new NBA 2K game? Do you ever run into issues getting licenses for songs that you want?

David Kelley: We approach every soundtrack as a reflection of both basketball and culture. Our 2K Music team, composed of myself, Richie Menchavez, and Simon Weedn, all almost literally eat, sleep, and breathe music to build something that feels true to the moment and to our community.

We all come from different walks within the music industry—artists, DJs, managers, music supervisors, live events, studio engineers, composers—so we are able to bring a really well-rounded and unique perspective. We work closely with our development team at Visual Concepts to find new, dynamic ways music can enhance the NBA 2K experience.

With additional support from Take-Two’s world-class music team, we’re able to tap into incredible expertise across the board. Of course, licensing is a huge part of that process. We work with incredible partners like Fox Sound Studios and have long-standing relationships with labels, publishers, and artists around the world.

There are always songs we wish we could include that, for one reason or another, don’t clear in time but that’s part of the fun and challenge. The passion our team has for music keeps us pushing until the soundtrack feels right.

Shacknews: The popularity of some songs is short-lived. Are there ever any concerns that players will grow tired of certain tracks, particularly ones tied to viral trends or cultural moments?

Kelley: That’s definitely something we think about, which is why NBA 2K’s live service model has been a game-changer for us. We refresh the soundtrack every six weeks, which allows us to stay up-to-date with what’s happening in music right now.

Shacknews: There’s an old Drake lyric that goes, “I swear sports and music are so synonymous, ’cause we want to be them, and they want to be us.” Can you talk about the relationship between music and basketball, and how it informs your work on NBA 2K?

Kelley: That lyric nails it. Basketball and music are indelibly linked. The culture around the game goes hand-in-hand with the sound that fuels it. Players walk into the arena with headphones on, artists sit courtside at games, etc. — it’s all one ecosystem of creativity.

When we’re building the NBA 2K soundtrack, we think about how a track feels in that context. Music amplifies those emotional beats of the game, and our job is to make sure every track supports that energy. NBA 2K26 Season 2’s new Greatest Hits soundtrack really captures that philosophy.

It doesn’t matter when a song was released, who’s behind it, or where they are from; if the song captures the energy that resonates with our community, we want our audience to hear it in NBA 2K.

Shacknews: There’s a lot of nostalgia wrapped up in the 2K soundtracks of years past. How many of the “greatest hits” are you bringing back for Season 2 of NBA 2K26? What songs immediately jumped out as ones you had to bring back?

Kelley: We’re bringing back a mix of iconic tracks that have defined the NBA 2K experience over the years. Without giving away the full list yet, there are some unmistakable records from both classic and newer artists.

The selection process was guided heavily by community feedback. Fans have been incredibly vocal about which songs they still associate with certain eras of NBA 2K, and that passion made it easy to see what belonged on the Greatest Hits list.

This season really is a celebration and a chance to honor the music that shaped the game’s identity while introducing those classics to a whole new generation of players.

Ryukyu Opera Premieres With Tale of Kingdom’s King and Queen

Composed by Urasoe native Arakatsu, the opera masterfully blends traditional Ryukyuan performing arts—such as classical dance and folk songs—with Western orchestral music, creating a unique cultural fusion.

Spectators praised not only the powerful vocal performances and live orchestration but also the inclusion of elements like karate demonstrations and traditional island rituals, which deepened the production’s local flavor.

“I was amazed by how many traditional arts were woven into the story from singing and dance to karate,” said one audience member. “It was both fun and deeply moving.”

Another attendee added, “I saw the production last year too, and I’m always impressed. It’s a kind of opera that could only exist in Okinawa, and the love between the two leads was so powerful.”

As the final notes of the live orchestra echoed through the theater, the audience responded with thunderous applause. Many praised the work as a celebration of Okinawa’s “chanpuru” spirit—the blending of cultures—and a powerful new expression of tradition through contemporary art.

“Traditional arts combined with new forms of expression make them even more compelling,” said one commentator, summing up the mood of a night when history, music, and emotion came together on stage.

Sea of Thieves director Gregg Mayles leaves Rare after almost 37 years

A career spanning almost four decades came to an end at Rare this week, as longtime employee and Sea of Thieves director Gregg Mayles announced his departure from the company.

Mayles has been working at Rare for about 36 years and 10 months, during which he contributed to some of the studio’s most beloved franchises, including Donkey Kong Country, Viva Piñata, Battletoads, Banjo-Kazooie, and many others.

He shared the news of his departure in a post on social media this week, thanking fans for playing his games and expressing gratitude to his team for their unwavering support. In true creative fashion, Mayles crafted a lengthy and heartfelt rhyme dedicated to his many years at Rare.

This massive ditty was fitting, considering his career encompasses most of Rare’s greatest hits, as documented by his profile on MobyGames. Mayles began his journey with the studio in 1991, working on Battletoads. Over the years, he lent his talents to game design, art design, producing, and eventually directing a wide range of titles.

In the later stage of his career, Mayles took on the role of director for Sea of Thieves, Rare’s flagship live-service game. Now 17 seasons in, Sea of Thieves continues to thrive under the foundation laid during his leadership.

Gregg Mayles leaves behind a remarkable legacy that has shaped the history of Rare and influenced generations of gamers worldwide.

A Meow-tastical List of Cat Memes of Cats Being Absolutely Cat-astrophically Cat

The title says it all, and we all understand what it means. There’s a tacit implication behind being “cat.” Cat humor, cat behavior, cat anything is so iconically cat.

From their paranoid, crazy eyes to shifting instantly from calm to bouncing off the walls, cats really live up to their stereotypes. There’s never a time when I meet a cat and it isn’t just the most cat-like cat to me. Even a white, soft, fluffy, beautiful cat is still… a cat.

There’s something stripped of sophistication, in the most cat way. My cat is so cat he doesn’t even know it (or maybe he does). Sometimes I think he’s actually a little man in the body of a cat, or maybe a baby. His facial expressions are too human-like for me to believe he’s fully cat — but it’s exactly what makes him so cat. Cat-ception!

So, enjoy these adorable and hilarious cat memes, and take a moment to ponder: is your cat really that cat?
