Terrified passengers began screaming as the vehicle hung precariously above the Ganga River. The impact was so severe that the bridge’s railing broke, leaving half of the bus dangerously suspended over the edge.

A video of the incident quickly surfaced on social media, showing the bus hanging off the bridge and highlighting how narrowly a major tragedy was avoided. The footage has since gone viral, drawing widespread attention.

Police officials rushed to the spot immediately after receiving the information. A crane was called in to safely remove the bus from its precarious position. Fortunately, all passengers were safely rescued without injury.

Authorities have launched a detailed investigation into the cause of the accident and are conducting safety inspections on both the bus and the bridge. According to a report by Jagran, had the bus slid just a few inches further, it could have plunged entirely into the Ganges River.

It is heartening to learn that basic facilities such as toilets, petrol pumps, and food malls will soon be available along the Samruddhi Mahamarg. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation to appoint consultants to set up these essential amenities along the route. This move should help stem commuter criticism about the current lack of such facilities on the expressway.

These amenities are not luxuries or frills; they are necessities aimed at preventing driver fatigue and reducing the risk of accidents. Fadnavis rightly suggested that while constructing any road in the future, an ecosystem should be developed in the surrounding area to support commuters’ needs.

This point is especially important as experts have highlighted the rise of residential projects, particularly high-rise towers, without adequate supporting infrastructure. Where is the ecosystem to support these developments? We need a holistic, comprehensive approach to infrastructure, ensuring that adjunct facilities are built alongside core projects.

Travelers to the West often experience highways and expressways equipped with toilets, basic stores, food and drink kiosks, or even malls conveniently located en route. Unfortunately, this is not yet the case here. Many stretches of roads lack toilets, causing discomfort and distress, and causing potential travelers to hesitate or even cancel road trips altogether.

People traveling with senior citizens, in particular, think twice before using routes that lack basic amenities. This underscores the importance of setting deadlines not only for road construction projects but also for the development of all supporting infrastructure.

A visionary approach is needed when shaping the road transport of the future. Beyond superior road quality, lighting, good signage, visibility, and safety warnings, we must also prioritize restrooms, food facilities, and fuel stops along the way.

Such a comprehensive plan makes the project complete, focusing not just on the vehicle or the road itself but also on the human factor—closing the loop for a safer and more comfortable commute for all.

The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) is facing rising public concern over the absence of a protective roof at the entrance of the newly constructed underground Hutatma Chowk Metro Station. Official images released by MMRCL on Sunday reveal that the station’s entry and exit points are completely open to the sky, raising fears about commuter safety, especially during Mumbai’s intense monsoon season.

Commuters and Activists Raise Concerns

Passenger safety advocates have expressed apprehensions that rainwater could flow down the exposed stairways and escalators, resulting in slippery surfaces and an increased risk of accidents. “The absence of a roof raises serious concerns about water entering the station during rains. Wet escalators and stairs could easily become hazardous for commuters,” said a passenger activist.

Heritage-Sensitive Design Explanation

Responding to these concerns, an MMRCL spokesperson told FPJ on Monday that the design of the Hutatma Chowk station was deliberately planned to respect the heritage character of the surrounding D.N. Road precinct, which includes iconic landmarks such as Flora Fountain and the Hutatma Chowk memorial.

“The station design was developed in consultation with heritage architects and has received a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee. To preserve the visual and architectural integrity of this historic area, all structures except lift shafts and some ventilation elements have been constructed underground.

The entry and exit points—made of stone and glass—are open to the sky and have been designed to blend seamlessly with the surrounding heritage environment, in line with global practices in heritage zones,” the MMRCL said in an official statement.

Safety Measures and Infrastructure Features

MMRCL further clarified that the escalators installed at the entrance are rated for full outdoor usage and that rainwater drainage and flood-prevention systems are already in place.

“Commuter safety has been a key consideration. We assure the public that this is a conscious and approved heritage-sensitive design, aimed at enhancing the urban character of this historic area,” the spokesperson added.

Virar–Dahanu Rail Quadrupling Nears Completion; Seven Potential New Stations Proposed

Seven potential new stations have been identified along the Virar–Dahanu section. These include Wadhiv, Sartodi, Makunsar, Chintupada, Panchali, Wanjarwada, and BSES Colony. The ambitious Rs 3,578 crore Virar–Dahanu Road quadrilateral rail corridor project has reached a significant milestone, with 86% of the earthwork — including cutting and filling — now completed, according to officials from the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC). This corridor is a key component of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) Phase III and is set to transform suburban rail connectivity in the far northern suburbs. The project aims to reduce congestion and enhance the commuter experience between Virar and Dahanu.

So far, over 23.5 lakh cubic metres of earthwork filling and 2.18 lakh cubic metres of cutting have been successfully executed. The scale of civil engineering efforts underscores the corridor’s strategic importance in expanding Mumbai’s suburban rail network.

**Infrastructure Developments Along the Corridor**

Several bridges and Road Under Bridges (RUBs) were planned under the project, most of which have now been structurally completed. These include key crossings and waterway structures essential for uninterrupted rail traffic.

At Virar and Vaitarna, construction of RPF/GRP and RRI buildings, substations, gang tool rooms, and water tanks has been completed. Currently, deck and station building works are underway.

At Palghar, Saphale, Kelve Road, Boisar, Vangaon, Umroli, and Dahanu Road, the construction of new station buildings, foot over bridges (FOBs), connecting overpasses (COPs), staff quarters, relay huts, and operational control buildings is at an advanced stage. Finishing works are nearing completion at Umroli, Boisar, and Vangaon.

Signalling and telecom-related activities, including cable laying and other outdoor works, are progressing steadily across all locations.

**Expected Benefits**

Once operational, the upgraded corridor is expected to significantly increase the frequency and capacity of suburban services on the Western Railway line. This will ease the burden on existing infrastructure and improve daily commute times for thousands of passengers, contributing to a smoother and more efficient travel experience.

**Project Completion Timeline**

The quadrupling of the Virar–Dahanu Road section is a key element of a long-term strategy to strengthen suburban rail connectivity across Mumbai’s extended metropolitan region. Despite challenges related to land acquisition and forest clearances, the project is moving forward steadily.

The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) remains fully committed to completing the project by the end of the Financial Year 2026–27, barring unforeseen circumstances such as legal, environmental, or force majeure issues beyond control, according to an official.

FAA extends flight restrictions at Newark Airport until Oct. 24, 2026

Air traffic controllers who handle flights arriving and departing from the airport faced significant challenges earlier this year due to multiple communications and radar outages. These issues led to thousands of cancellations, disrupting travel plans for many passengers.

While the FAA continues to limit flights, the number of takeoffs and landings is gradually increasing by four per hour, now reaching 72 operations per hour. However, this figure remains well below the more than 80 flights per hour that the airport experienced before the current caps were put in place.

United Airlines, which operates a major hub at Newark, has expressed support for limiting the number of flights into the airport. CEO Scott Kirby emphasized the importance of this approach, stating, “The reduced operations, along with continued focus on technology upgrades and ATC staffing increases, are critical milestones toward Newark’s long-term operational certainty. Things will only get better as we head into the fall and winter seasons.”

In testimony before members of the House in June, former acting head of the FAA Chris Rocheleau projected that by October, the Philadelphia air traffic control facility—which manages flights in and out of Newark—would reach healthy staffing levels and resolve ongoing technology issues.

The FAA has reported a successful transition to a brand-new fiber optic communications network linking New York and the Philadelphia TRACON. Staffing numbers have also improved, with 22 fully certified controllers and five certified supervisors currently on duty. Additionally, 27 controllers and supervisors are in training to further bolster the team.

These developments signal progress toward restoring more stable and efficient air traffic operations at Newark, with continued improvements expected in the coming months.
