Bhopal News: No Prescription, No Problem; City Chemists Selling Almost All Medicines Over The Counter

**Medicines Readily Available Without Prescription in Bhopal Pharmacies, But Rules Remain**

*Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh):*

In many medical stores across Bhopal, almost all medicines are available for purchase without a doctor’s prescription. Except for some psychiatric medicines and high-end antibiotics classified as Schedule H1 drugs, pharmacies are reportedly selling other medicines without insisting on prescriptions from Registered Medical Practitioners.

Chemists, however, maintain that they strictly adhere to regulations and do not sell prescription-only drugs without a doctor’s authorization. Pharmacies are permitted to sell certain products Over the Counter (OTC), which include Ayurvedic and herbal preparations, dietary supplements, and cosmetics.

According to the rules, the owner of a medicine shop should be a pharmacy graduate, and at least one qualified pharmacist must be present in the shop at all times. However, not all employees working at the pharmacy need to be pharmacists.

Ansh Chawla, owner of Moolchand Pharmacy, explained, “I don’t require a prescription to sell electoral powder, Borolin, Strepsils, or multivitamins.” He added that entire product ranges from brands like Himalaya, Baidyanath, and Dabur fall under the OTC category.

Chawla emphasized that drugs listed under Schedules H1 and H of the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945 cannot be sold OTC, whether generic or branded. “They can be sold only when prescribed by a qualified and registered doctor,” he said. He further detailed the procedure followed if a prescribed medicine is not available: “We call the doctor to ask whether we can substitute it with another drug. If the doctor consents, we write the name of the substitute and then provide the medicine to the buyer.”

Ashish Yadav from Yadav Medicos shared that about 90% of their sales are based on prescriptions. Items such as Vicks, Bournvita, and Jhandu Balm are sold without prescriptions, he said, adding that they do not sell pediatric medicines without a valid prescription.

However, contrary to the claims made by chemists, a recent check by a reporter found that a strip of Meftal tablets and cough syrup were easily purchased from two different medical stores without a prescription.

Dr. Meet Dwivedi commented, “Chemists can sell nutraceuticals, cosmetics, and products like Dettol over the counter. However, medicinal drugs require a doctor’s prescription. Cough syrups are not OTC products. They can cause nausea and lethargy and should not be sold or consumed without a doctor’s advice.”

Jitendra Dhakad, President of the Chemists Association, Bhopal, added, “Medicines should be sold only on a doctor’s prescription. A pharmacist should be present at the shop at all times to supervise the sale of medicines and ensure that they are stored at the correct temperature and in proper conditions. However, there is no rule mandating that every staff member must be a pharmacist.”

IISER Kolkata Develops ‘Friendly Bacteria’ To Combat Cancer From Within Patient’s Body

Kolkata: A team from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Kolkata has developed a “friendly bacteria” that can safely and effectively fight cancer from within the patient’s body, the premier institute announced in a statement.

Alongside this breakthrough, the team is also developing a detection system capable of monitoring the progress of the therapy. Together, these innovations mark a new frontier in the combined therapeutic and diagnostic approach to cancer treatment, IISER Kolkata said.

Their project, titled ReSET (Reprogramming the Suppressive Environment of Tumour Microenvironment), addresses one of the biggest barriers in cancer therapy. According to the statement, “Cancer often hides behind special immune cells called T regulatory cells (Tregs), which suppress the body’s natural defence system. This makes standard therapies like immunotherapy or chemotherapy less effective.”

Taking a bold and innovative approach, the IISER Kolkata team is engineering probiotics that can detect tumors and disrupt Tregs activity, reactivating the immune system against cancer. In simple terms, they are converting friendly microbes into living, targeted medicines that could one day work from inside the patient’s body to make cancer treatment safer and more effective.

Moving beyond the lab, the students have integrated human practices into their design by engaging with oncologists, surgeons, cancer survivors, and NGOs. They have also organized outreach programs in schools, cancer awareness campaigns, and collaborated with hair donors and patient support groups. These dialogues helped shape the therapy to be scientifically sound, ethically responsible, and socially relevant.

The team emphasizes that their work is not only a scientific prototype but also a proof of concept demonstrating that India’s youth can drive world-class research. “By targeting the Tregs pathway with engineered bacteria, we hope to bring forward a completely new class of cancer therapeutics, one that will revolutionize the way we treat cancer,” the team noted.

The group of 11 undergraduate students from IISER Kolkata will represent their institute and India at the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) Grand Jamboree 2025, the world’s largest synthetic biology competition, to be held in Paris in October this year.

PIL filed in Supreme Court seeks inquiry into toxic cough syrup deaths of 14

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking an inquiry and systemic reforms in drug safety mechanisms. This comes in the wake of the deaths of 14 children in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, allegedly due to the consumption of toxic cough syrups.

The PIL, filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari, requests a court-monitored probe into the incidents. It also urges the constitution of a National Judicial Commission or an Expert Committee headed by a retired Supreme Court judge to oversee the matter.

Additionally, the plea seeks the transfer of all pending FIRs and investigations related to the deaths of children across various states to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The plea further urges the court to direct the Central government to constitute a national-level judicial or expert body to identify regulatory failures that allowed the distribution of substandard medicines. It also calls for mandatory toxicological testing of all suspected products before they are allowed for further sale.

‘No Cheat Meals, We Eat Everything’: Milind Soman & Ankita Konwar Share Their Diet

At 59, Milind Soman continues to defy age, proving that fitness isn’t about strict routines or fancy diets — it’s a way of life. In an exclusive chat with the Free Press Journal, Milind and his wife Ankita Konwar opened up about their wellness habits, daily rituals, and the philosophy that keeps them both mentally and physically strong.

Despite being one of India’s most admired fitness icons, Milind insists that his approach to health is refreshingly simple and flexible. “I don’t have a job,” he joked, explaining that his schedule is different every single day, yet he manages to work out and eat right. No excuses there!

### Different Morning Routines, Same Discipline

The couple may be different when it comes to how they start their day, but they share the same commitment to balance. Milind confessed that he enjoys sleeping in, but the moment he wakes up, he starts “moving and twisting” right in bed before heading out for a run.

Ankita, on the other hand, is an early riser who dedicates the first 15 minutes of her morning entirely to herself — no distractions, no rush. Both begin their day with a glass of water, a simple ritual they swear by.

“It’s the best way to flush out toxins and hydrate your body,” Ankita said.

Neither believes in fancy detox drinks or fad diets. For them, wellness is rooted in consistency, not complexity.

### No Diets, No Calorie Counting, Just Mindful Eating

One of the most striking revelations the couple made is that they don’t count calories or obsess over macros.

“We don’t differentiate between carbs, proteins, or fats,” Milind shared. “We just eat a balanced, home-cooked meal.”

Ankita added that they avoid processed or packaged foods as much as possible.

Surprisingly, the duo doesn’t believe in the concept of cheat meals either. Milind explained, “If I want to eat a gulab jamun or a pizza, I’ll eat it. When your mind and body are in sync, you automatically choose what’s right for you. Food doesn’t control you anymore.”

### Intermittent Fasting and the Power of Listening to Your Body

Milind recently experimented with intermittent fasting and found great results, losing 7–8 kilos without even realizing it.

“People said I looked fit already, but fasting helped me shed extra weight naturally,” he said.

The couple’s philosophy is clear: fitness is not about restriction but about awareness. By listening to their bodies, staying active every day, and maintaining a stress-free relationship with food, Milind Soman and Ankita Konwar continue to inspire millions across the country.

Their mantra is simple yet powerful: move daily, eat mindfully, and let fitness flow naturally.

Inhalers for asthma, COPD are climate change contributors, study finds

Inhalers that provide fast-acting treatment for people with certain respiratory conditions are contributing to greenhouse gas emissions, which can worsen both climate change and the conditions themselves, according to new research.

Published Monday in the *Journal of the American Medical Association*, the study found that inhalers approved for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) generated an estimated 24.9 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions in the United States from 2014 to 2024. This amount is equivalent to the emissions of about 530,000 gas-powered cars each year.

“Scaled across tens of millions of inhalers dispensed annually, these emissions drive global warming, exacerbating the very respiratory conditions inhalers are meant to relieve,” authors of a supplemental editorial note wrote.

Asthma and chronic lung disease affect millions of Americans. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, 28 million Americans have asthma, and 34 million live with chronic lung disease. These cases are expected to increase as climate change worsens air pollution, which in turn raises the risk and severity of respiratory symptoms.

Researchers identified metered-dose inhalers—the boot-shaped treatment devices many people picture—as the most harmful to the environment. These inhalers accounted for 98% of emissions over the decade-long period. However, it’s not the medication itself causing the issue.

The problem lies in the hydrofluoroalkane propellants contained in these inhalers. Hydrofluoroalkanes are potent greenhouse gases widely used in products like aerosol sprays, which significantly contribute to the carbon footprint.

“Inhalers add to the growing carbon footprint of the US healthcare system, putting many patients with chronic respiratory disease at risk,” said lead author Dr. William Feldman, a pulmonologist and health services researcher at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, in a news release. “On the upside, there is tremendous opportunity to make changes that protect both patients and the planet by utilizing lower-emission alternatives.”

The study also found that other types of inhalers, such as dry powder inhalers and soft mist inhalers, are less harmful to the environment. These devices deliver medication to the lungs without the need for propellants, offering a greener alternative for patients and healthcare systems alike.

Cough syrup deaths: PIL in SC seeks CBI probe

**Cough Syrup Deaths: PIL in Supreme Court Seeks CBI Probe**

*By Snehil Singh | October 7, 2025, 4:29 PM*

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the deaths of 14 children in Madhya Pradesh, allegedly after consuming a cough syrup. The PIL demands an investigation led by a retired Supreme Court judge into the manufacturing, regulation, testing, and distribution of contaminated cough syrups, ANI reported.

Several children across different states reportedly died after consuming Coldrif cough syrup, which was found to contain diethylene glycol (DEG), a highly toxic industrial solvent.

### Ban and Quality Concerns

The Union Health Ministry has confirmed that Coldrif cough syrup, produced by Sresan Pharma in Tamil Nadu, contained DEG levels beyond permissible limits. A Drug Testing Laboratory in Chennai declared the product “Not of Standard Quality” after testing a sample, a finding also confirmed by the Tamil Nadu Directorate of Drug Control.

Following these findings and mounting concerns due to child deaths linked to suspected renal failure, Tamil Nadu became the first state to ban the sale and distribution of Coldrif syrup.

### Actions Taken by Other States

In response to the crisis, Madhya Pradesh and Kerala have also banned Coldrif cough syrup. Telangana issued a public alert warning consumers about the product, while the Punjab government directed all retailers and healthcare institutions to cease purchasing or using Coldrif.

The tragic incident has led to widespread confiscation of stock nationwide and prompted stringent revisions to drug prescription guidelines in states such as Kerala and Karnataka.

### Historical Context: WHO Warnings Over Indian Cough Syrups

This is not the first time Indian-made cough syrups have been linked to fatal outcomes. In 2022, the World Health Organization (WHO) associated cough syrups from Maiden Pharmaceuticals with the deaths of 70 children in The Gambia due to acute kidney injuries caused by DEG and ethylene glycol (EG).

In 2023, Uzbekistan reported at least 18 child deaths linked to Indian-made cough syrup manufactured by Marion Biotech, triggering another WHO warning.

The ongoing investigation and regulatory actions highlight the urgent need for stricter quality control and oversight in pharmaceutical manufacturing to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.

Upper body workout: 5 must-do exercises

By Anujj Trehaan | Oct 07, 2025, 10:17 AM

**What’s the story?**

The trapezius muscle, commonly referred to as the trap, is an important muscle that spans the upper back and neck. It plays a vital role in shoulder movement and stability. Strengthening the traps can improve posture, enhance athletic performance, and reduce the risk of injury.

Here are five effective exercises to activate and strengthen the trapezius muscles.

### Tip 1: Shrug Your Way to Stronger Traps

Shoulder shrugs are an easy yet effective exercise to target the upper traps. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand. Lift your shoulders towards your ears while keeping your arms straight, then lower them back down.

Repeat for 10 to 15 reps. This exercise can be done with or without weights, making it ideal for both beginners and advanced lifters.

### Tip 2: Deadlifts for Full-Body Engagement

Deadlifts work multiple muscle groups, including the traps. Stand with feet hip-width apart, a barbell over your mid-foot. Bend at your hips and knees to grip the barbell, then lift by straightening your hips and knees simultaneously.

Focus on squeezing your shoulder blades together at the top of the movement. Perform three sets of eight to 12 reps.

### Tip 3: Face Pulls for Upper Back Activation

Face pulls are great for targeting both the upper traps and rear deltoids. Use a cable machine set at eye level or higher. Stand facing it with feet hip-width apart, grasping two handles with an overhand grip.

Pull the handles towards your face while keeping your elbows high and wide, then return slowly to the starting position. Aim for three sets of 12 to 15 reps.

### Tip 4: Bent-Over Rows to Build Strength

Bent-over rows target mid-trap fibers, while also working other back muscles such as lats and rhomboids. With feet shoulder-width apart, hold a barbell or dumbbells with an overhand grip.

Bend forward at your hips until your torso is almost parallel to the ground, then pull the weights towards your abdomen, squeezing your shoulder blades together at the top of each rep. Do three sets of eight to 12 reps.

### Tip 5: Upright Rows for Trap Focus

Upright rows specifically target upper trap activation when performed correctly, using either dumbbells or a barbell. Stand upright, holding weights with your palms facing you, close together at chin level.

Lift your elbows outward and upward, maintaining a slight bend in your knees throughout the movement. Lower back down slowly, completing the cycle. Repeat for three sets of eight to 12 repetitions.

Strengthening your trapezius muscles through these exercises can significantly improve your posture, enhance your workouts, and help prevent injuries. Incorporate them gradually into your fitness routine for best results!
