Why gardening mishaps are a (sometimes painful) part of the process

By Jessica Damiano | The Associated Press I’ll be the first to admit there have been a few frights in my garden over the years, starting with the English ivy and pea-gravel mulch I inherited when I moved into the house and ending with the mint I foolishly planted directly in the ground many years ago, when I didn’t realize it would still be around to haunt me today. Did I say “ending with?” Who am I kidding? I’m still causing all sorts of mayhem in my beds and borders. Recently, I had to hire a landscaper to remove the creeping Liriope I mistook for the clumping type. The poor guy toiled with a pickaxe for more than three hours. I’m just glad he didn’t come after me with it. In the process, I lost many of the weedy groundcover’s mature perennial and bulb neighbors, and it will be years before the new plantings mature and the border returns to its former abundant glory. Plenty of blame Some ghastly garden scenarios, like my mint mishap, are clearly our own fault, but the blame for others can fall squarely on outsiders, like the nurseries that mislabel plants or the squirrels that “plant” invasive species among our natives. Either way, the cleanup falls to us. Nobody knows this better than John and Mary Richardson of Port Jefferson Station, New York, who wrote to tell me about that one time they were advised to apply cayenne pepper around their vegetable plants to repel the critters that were wreaking havoc on their harvests. “We happily and liberally sprinkled it in every bed in the garden,” they told me, adding that they took care to repeat the application after every rainfall to ensure “the protection would continue.” Before long, the couple said, pepper plants were taking over all their vegetable and flower beds. “It had never occurred to us to use ground cayenne and not pepper flakes, which are seeds,” they admitted. Speaking of seeds reminds me of a tale recounted years ago by a reader who was perplexed by the weekly disappearances of tomatoes from his vines. After checking to assess the ripeness of one particularly plump heirloom beauty, he decided to hold off on harvesting for one more day, when he planned to enjoy a tomato-sandwich lunch. But when the salivating sower went out to pick it, that tomato, too, was nowhere to be found. It was lawn-mowing day, he said, and it didn’t take long for him to discover “the landscapers had tomato seeds in their teeth.” I also once heard from a desperate reader who was battling the running bamboo that had been planted by his next-door neighbor. The viciously invasive, iron-rooted plant had grown under the fence dividing their properties and was poking up through his swimming pool liner. I wonder if he had to move. ‘The ultimate rookie mistake’ Then there’s Alyssa Sirek from Granbury, Texas: “With years of horticulture experience, I made the ultimate rookie mistake,” she admitted. “I put a bird feeder directly over our freshly landscaped rockscape and forgot that bird seed is, in fact, seed. “Between the birds flinging seeds like confetti and a few solid Texas rainstorms, our clean rockscape transformed into accidental chaos,” she said. Committed to avoiding pesticides, Sirek spent hours “hand-pulling surprise sprouts, collecting ant bites, knee scrapes, and a bruised ego along the way.” Months later, she said, stray seedlings still pop up from time to time, particularly after storms. Hoping for a fun project to do with her kids, she ordered ladybug larvae by mail. “I released them onto my zucchini plants, later to find out they were actually squash beetles,” she said. “They decimated all of my plants.” And sometimes, it comes with the job. Alice Raimondo says she sees a lot of strange things working as a horticultural lab coordinator at the Cornell Cooperative Extension’s diagnostic clinic in Riverhead, New York, where homeowners bring diseased plants and creepy insects for identification. Once, a woman brought in a wreath she was making out of cones that she’d collected, Raimondo remembers. “She liked the way the cones looked, but after working with a few of them, (she noticed) they wriggled,” she said. “Turns out, they were bagworms,” destructive pests that wrap themselves in “bags” that they construct from leaves and other plant parts. The woman “was pretty grossed out,” Raimondo said. As these brave gardeners can attest, one simple mistake can turn into a gruesome cautionary tale. ___ Jessica Damiano writes weekly gardening columns for the AP and publishes the award-winning Weekly Dirt Newsletter.

Liverpool learn HARSH Ibrahima Konate contract truth after Man City mauling

Liverpool have been concerned about Ibrahima Konate’s contract situation for quite some time. The 26-year-old’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the season, and as things stand, there is no renewal on the horizon. Unless Richard Hughes and the France international’s representatives can reach an agreement, Konate could leave the club for free.

This is far from an ideal scenario for the Reds, especially given that Konate is a key first-team player who cost the club £35 million. Liverpool’s decision-makers will be eager to avoid losing him for nothing, but securing his future may require some compromise from the club. At the same time, it appears Konate is standing firm in his contract negotiations.

**Konate’s Mammoth Renewal Demands**

The centre-back is reportedly seeking a significant pay rise from his current £140,000 per week. Reports suggest he wants at least £200,000 per week—a figure that would place him among the club’s top earners.

But there is an awkward question lingering, particularly after Liverpool’s recent defeat to Manchester City in the Premier League: **Is Konate worth it?**

Yes, Konate is proven at Premier League level, but this season he has struggled to find his best form. His performance against City was notably below par, marked by several errors. He was at fault for conceding a penalty to Erling Haaland, following a VAR review, and he lost his man in the build-up to Haaland’s opening goal—failing to win his header and allowing the Norwegian striker to profit.

**Is Konate Worth a New Deal?**

Liverpool would have expected Konate to one day step up as their defensive leader, especially as Virgil van Dijk nears the twilight of his career. Yet, the France international remains far too inconsistent. The Reds are not getting the best out of him, and there is a risk that this inconsistency could persist if he signs a lucrative renewal.

The harsh truth may be that Konate’s best days for Liverpool are already behind him. Considering the financial commitment required, the club might be better served allowing him to continue his career elsewhere.

Looking ahead to 2026, Liverpool could have an opportunity to refresh their backline by bringing in a new partner for Van Dijk. Players like Marc Guehi and Ronald Araujo have been linked with the club and could potentially offer an upgrade on Konate.

At this rate, Konate’s performances are not providing a strong case for a renewal—especially when weighed against his contract demands. When Mohamed Salah required a new deal last season, he responded with arguably the best individual season in Premier League history. Konate would be wise to take inspiration from that and rediscover his best form.

Everyone’s Buying Pickup Trucks But Almost No One’s Using Them That Way

Automakers often talk about following market trends, but in reality, they’re the ones steering them. Their instincts aren’t always perfect—sometimes they miss the curve, and other times they overshoot it entirely. But when the marketing lands, it cuts straight to emotion, leaving logic somewhere in the rearview.

**Read:** [New Ram Hemi Is A Supercharged Street Truck](#)

That might explain why so many people who buy and drive trucks today use them no differently than sedan or crossover owners. Most truck ads feature towing, hauling, or gnarly off-road heroics. They promise unmatched capability and performance. In practice, however, data shows most owners treat their trucks as lifestyle vehicles, not work tools.

### Everyday Trucks or Weekend Toys?

Carscoops spoke with Alexander Edwards, President of Strategic Vision, a research firm that surveys some 250,000 car buyers each year. His data paints a clear picture: truck owners love their rides, even if they’re not particularly engaging to drive compared to other segments.

Nearly 90 percent of truck buyers said they never use their truck for business towing, as a mobile office, or as a work site. Yet nearly 40 percent said they drive their truck strictly for pleasure at least once a week.

**Truck Use vs. Review:** [Ram’s Diesel 2500 Is Everything We Wanted But Nothing We Needed](#)

Those with standard and APT trucks are the most likely to use them for pleasure. Heavy-duty owners report the least amount of recreational driving, which makes sense given how differently each segment functions. APTs and standard trucks are often nimble, quick, and easy to park, while heavy-duty trucks are usually the opposite.

Here’s the kicker: while APT trucks might seem less likely to be used as trucks, the data says otherwise.

– **63.8%** of APT truck drivers haul something in the bed at least once a month, compared with **61.3%** of full-size truck owners.
– Towing habits differ slightly: **39%** of APT owners never tow, versus **32%** of full-size owners.
– Weekly towing breaks down as:
– **7.9%** of full-size truck owners
– **4.4%** of APT owners
– **12.2%** of heavy-duty truck owners

### How Truck Owners Actually Use Their Vehicles

All told, just over one in ten trucks on the road is never used as a truck at all. Their owners never haul, never tow, and would likely get by just fine with a car or crossover—which they might even enjoy driving more.

Still, as Edwards noted, truck ownership is often about identity:

> “They want that vehicle to take their self-perception and help them become their ideal self. When you get into your truck, you can be more confident, more capable, more reliable, more secure.”

**More:** [Tesla Owners Swapping For Diesels Might Be The Funniest Turn Of 2025](#)

That’s not to say every buyer is cosplaying as a cowboy. The data is clear: the larger the truck, the more likely it is to be used for its intended purpose. Yet even then, owners aren’t constantly hauling, towing, or rock-crawling. What matters most is that these vehicles *could* do those things if called upon. After all, not every Corvette owner hits a track every month, either.

### Bigger Machines, Bigger Questions

All of this data seems to point to one question: When our appetite for capability we rarely use leads to ever bigger vehicles on public roads, do we also carry trade-offs for safety?

Research from IIHS shows that vehicles with higher front ends—particularly pickups and SUVs with hood heights above 40 inches—are about **45 percent more likely to cause pedestrian fatalities** than lower-sloped cars with hoods 30 inches or less.

Additionally, studies show that extra weight in pickups adds almost no driver safety benefit beyond a point, but can increase risk for others involved in a crash.

Clearly, no one should be forced into buying a vehicle they don’t enjoy. But perhaps it is time we question how ethical it is for automakers to steer the market the way they do in advertisements, which may influence not just our perception, but the size, shape, and risk profile of vehicles we share the road with.

Zohran Mamdani’s rise: From Queens lawmaker to New York City mayor

NEW YORK (AP) — When he announced his run for mayor last October, Zohran Mamdani was a state lawmaker unknown to most New York City residents. But that changed dramatically after the 34-year-old democratic socialist shocked the national political scene with a stunning upset over former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in June’s Democratic primary.

On Tuesday, Mamdani completed his political ascension by once again defeating Cuomo, as well as Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, in the general election. The former foreclosure prevention counselor and one-time rapper becomes New York City’s first Muslim mayor, its first mayor born in Africa, and the first of South Asian heritage—not to mention the youngest mayor in more than a century.

“I will wake up each morning with a singular purpose: To make this city better for you than it was the day before,” Mamdani promised New Yorkers in his victory speech.

### Mamdani’s Progressive Promises for New York City

Mamdani ran on an optimistic vision for New York City, offering a campaign packed with ambitious policies aimed at lowering the cost of living for everyday residents. His proposals included free child care, free bus rides, a rent freeze for tenants in rent-regulated apartments, and new affordable housing—much of it funded by raising taxes on the wealthy.

Additionally, Mamdani proposed launching a pilot program for city-run grocery stores to combat high food prices.

Since his Democratic primary win, Mamdani has moderated some of his more polarizing rhetoric, particularly around law enforcement. He backed off a 2020 social media post calling to “defund” the New York Police Department (NYPD) and publicly apologized to NYPD officers for describing the department as “racist” in another post.

While Mamdani is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, he insists that he is running on his own distinct platform and does not embrace all of the activist group’s priorities, some of which include ending mandatory jail time for certain crimes and cutting police budgets.

### NYC’s First Muslim Mayor

Mamdani embraced his faith amid the anti-Muslim rhetoric that marked the campaign’s final weeks. Outside a Bronx mosque in late October, he spoke emotionally about the “indignities” long faced by the city’s Muslim population and vowed to fully embrace his identity.

“I will not change who I am, how I eat, or the faith that I’m proud to call my own,” he said. “But there is one thing that I will change. I will no longer look for myself in the shadows. I will find myself in the light.”

### A Famous Filmmaker Mother and Academic Father

Born in Kampala, Uganda, to Indian parents, Mamdani became an American citizen in 2018 shortly after graduating from college. He lived briefly with his family in Cape Town, South Africa, before moving to New York City at age 7.

His mother, Mira Nair, is an award-winning filmmaker known for works including *Monsoon Wedding*, *The Namesake*, and *Mississippi Masala*. His father, Mahmood Mamdani, is an anthropology professor at Columbia University.

Earlier this year, Mamdani married Rama Duwaji, a Syrian American artist. The couple—who met on the dating app Hinge—live in the Astoria neighborhood of Queens.

### Once a Fledgling Rapper

Mamdani attended the Bronx High School of Science, where he co-founded the prestigious public school’s first cricket team, according to his legislative bio. He graduated in 2014 from Bowdoin College in Maine with a degree in Africana studies and co-founded the college’s Students for Justice in Palestine chapter.

After college, he worked as a foreclosure prevention counselor in Queens, helping residents avoid eviction—a job he says inspired his run for public office.

Mamdani also had a notable side hustle in the local hip-hop scene, rapping under the monikers Young Cardamom and later Mr. Cardamom. During his first run for state lawmaker, he humorously described himself as a “B-list rapper.”

### Early Political Career

Mamdani began his political career by working on campaigns for Democratic candidates in Queens and Brooklyn. He was first elected to the New York Assembly in 2020, defeating a longtime Democratic incumbent in a Queens district covering Astoria and surrounding neighborhoods. Since then, he has been re-elected twice with ease.

One of the democratic socialist’s most notable legislative achievements has been pushing through a pilot program that made a handful of city buses free for a year. He has also proposed legislation banning nonprofits from “engaging in unauthorized support of Israeli settlement activity.”

Opponents, particularly Cuomo, dismissed Mamdani as unprepared to manage the complexities of running America’s largest city. But Mamdani framed his relative inexperience as an asset, saying in a mayoral debate that he was “proud” not to have Cuomo’s “experience of corruption, scandal and disgrace.”

### Viral Campaign Videos

Mamdani’s campaign benefited from buzzy videos, many featuring winking references to Bollywood and his Indian heritage, helping him connect with voters beyond his Queens base.

On New Year’s Day, he participated in the annual polar plunge into the chilly waters off Coney Island wearing a full dress suit to present his plan to “freeze” rents. He interviewed food cart vendors about “Halal-flation” and humorously promised to make the city’s beloved chicken over rice lunches “eight bucks again.”

On TikTok, he appealed to voters of color by speaking in Spanish, Bengali, and other languages. His viral clips were complemented by widely viewed television commercials aired during *The Golden Bachelor*, *Survivor*, and the Knicks’ season opener.

### Pro-Palestinian Views

A longtime supporter of Palestinian rights, Mamdani maintained a strong criticism of Israel throughout his campaign—a stance often seen as a political third rail in New York.

He accused the Israeli government of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza and said Israel should exist as “a state with equal rights” for all, not solely as a “Jewish state.”

Mamdani faced strong criticism from opponents and many leaders in the Jewish community; Cuomo accused him of “fueling antisemitism.” Early in the race, Mamdani also drew backlash for initially refusing to denounce the phrase “globalize the intifada.” He later pledged to discourage others from using the phrase.

To court Jewish voters, Mamdani met with rabbis and attended a synagogue during the High Holy Days.

In his victory remarks on Tuesday, Mamdani pledged that under his leadership, City Hall will stand firmly against antisemitism.

Dodgers vs. Blue Jays Game 7 prediction: World Series picks, odds, bets, props

It all comes down to this: Game 7 of the World Series. With everything on the line, the Dodgers are sending Shohei Ohtani to the mound on short rest. They didn’t have much of a choice.

Dealing with a struggling bullpen and clinging to a two-run lead, the Dodgers turned to potential Game 7 starter Tyler Glasnow to close out the thrilling Game 6 victory on Friday night. Glasnow recorded the final three outs, including a game-ending double play, securing a 3-1 triumph.

This win puts Ohtani—the Dodgers don’t want him coming out of the bullpen due to MLB’s quirky designated hitter rules that would strip him of his ability to hit—in the driver’s seat for the decisive game. While we shouldn’t expect Ohtani to pitch a full nine innings on such short rest, it’s unlikely the Dodgers will treat him with kid gloves.

Ohtani hasn’t been taxed like an ace arm might be during a deep postseason run. He has pitched just three games this October, tossing exactly six innings in each start and averaging 94 pitches per appearance.

As mentioned, the Dodgers’ relievers haven’t been great this postseason, posting a 4.30 ERA after struggling all season. With no game scheduled for Sunday, I don’t see manager Dave Roberts turning to Emmet Sheehan, Clayton Kershaw, Blake Treinen, or anyone else in the Dodgers’ bullpen before exhausting his two-way star.

This time, Ohtani won’t be taking the mound coming off an 18-inning marathon like he did in Game 4, when he took the loss. He should be given every opportunity to get as many outs as possible.

**The Play:** Shohei Ohtani Over 9.5 outs recorded (-115, FanDuel Sportsbook)

Ghost Of Yotei’s Side Content Is Some Of The Best I’ve Ever Played

Prior to the release of *Ghost of Yotei*, Sucker Punch made a concerted effort to assure players that the game’s open world would be bursting with meaningful activities. This promise isn’t new—it’s something I adored about their previous game—but I was curious about how they intended to improve on it.

Both *Ghost of Yotei* and its predecessor boast stunning worlds, without a doubt. However, beautiful environments alone don’t hold players’ attention for long. This is a common concern in almost all open-world games: the gameplay often becomes a slog. It’s not enjoyable to collect items just for the sake of achieving a platinum trophy. I want to genuinely enjoy the journey, with activities and collectibles that feel valuable and worthwhile.

### Meaningful Content Throughout the World

What sets *Ghost of Yotei* apart is the way its content carries equal weight. The cards that Atsu collects as she uncovers sidequest leads, Yotei Six hunts, and bounty missions are all neatly organized on the map screen. You can select a card, and it’ll direct you to the corresponding location.

One particularly brilliant addition is that the game shows exactly what reward you will receive for completing an activity right beneath the card’s description. I appreciate this feature, though I must admit it becomes a bit tempting—especially late at night—knowing that I could unlock a new armor set if I just play a little longer. The armor sets themselves are unique, both aesthetically and in the abilities they provide, but that’s a story for another time.

The crucial point is that sidequests aren’t treated as simple busywork or distractions; instead, they feel like worthy, intriguing avenues to explore as you traverse this beautiful world.

### Bounties That Tell Stories

I was particularly intrigued by the bounties. I love the game’s combat and cinematic duels, but initially worried that bounties would boil down to dozens of repetitive fights, where enemies are only visually distinct. Thankfully, that’s not the case. Each bounty presents a completely unique encounter.

Some of these missions weave emotional narratives—like the sad tale of the Blue Yamauba and her family tragedy. Others require unexpected objectives, such as playing music to various groups to lure out an assassin who detests the sound of the shamisen.

I found myself eagerly taking on each bounty, not just for rewards or completion, but to experience the individual stories. My personal favorite was the mission with Shiro the Swindler, where we storm a fortress brimming with enemies to seize their cash stash. Shiro’s ultimate betrayal of Atsu was hilariously inevitable—after all, his name gave it away—but the way it played out was genuinely entertaining.

### Lavish Mythic Tales and Rewarding Armor Sets

The *Mythic Tales* take storytelling and gameplay even further. Much like those in *Ghost of Tsushima*, these quests are presented with lavish intro cutscenes, feature creative and unique objectives, and culminate in challenging battles against legendary warriors.

Completing Mythic Tales typically rewards you with exclusive armor sets that offer unique abilities—perfect for tailoring Atsu to fit your preferred playstyle. For example, as someone who enjoys stealthy kusarigama assassinations (which boast brutally satisfying animations), I was thrilled to discover the Crimson Kimono armor set. It dramatically increases the range at which these stealth kills can be performed.

These exclusive armor skills can influence how you approach combat and exploration, which makes investing time in side content consistently worthwhile in *Ghost of Yotei*.

### Sidequests with Heart and Impact

Regular sidequests, or *Tales*, also leave a significant impact. While their rewards typically comprise cash or cosmetics rather than grand armor sets, many of these short adventures are deeply touching.

One standout moment involved calming a baby bear with music and leading it safely down a mountainside. Another saw me helping a terrified father defend his wife from Oni Raiders as she gave birth in a nearby cave. Although some Tales only take about ten minutes, Sucker Punch does an excellent job of quickly endearing players to various NPCs.

I stumbled upon the latter quest while speeding along on horseback—a common occurrence in this game—and was delighted when the new parents named their daughter Atsu in my honor. In many games, NPCs feel static and just serve to fill the world with dialogue. While *Ghost of Yotei* does have its share of these, it also features characters who genuinely enrich its world.

Atsu’s fight isn’t simply about vengeance; it’s about survival in a harsh world. Many others, like the parents, share this struggle. Taking a break from hunting the heads of the Yotei Six to help them felt refreshing and rewarding.

### Repetitive Tasks with Tangible Benefits

Some tasks, such as bamboo strikes and bathing in hot springs, can become somewhat repetitive. However, maintaining these activities as you explore different regions offers real benefits: increased maximum health and spirit circles, which are invaluable.

Even on the standard difficulty, enemies are numerous and aggressive, with boss encounters especially posing serious challenges if you aren’t consistent with dodging and parrying. While expert players may breeze through these fights, I appreciated watching Atsu grow steadily stronger as I explored the world.

In summary, *Ghost of Yotei* masterfully balances a captivating open world with side content that feels meaningful, varied, and emotionally resonant. Whether through deeply personal sidequests, unique bounty encounters, or rewarding armor sets tied to ambitious Mythic Tales, the game keeps players engaged and invested long after the main story beckons.
