Sonam Wangchuk under investigation for Pakistan links: Ladakh DGP

**Sonam Wangchuk Under Investigation for Alleged Pakistan Links: Ladakh DGP**

*By Snehil Singh | Sep 27, 2025, 04:05 PM*

Ladakh’s Director General of Police (DGP), SD Singh Jamwal, has announced that climate activist Sonam Wangchuk is currently under investigation for alleged connections with Pakistan.

According to Jamwal, authorities recently arrested a person of Indian origin from Pakistan (PIO) who was reportedly transmitting sensitive information across the border. “We have a record of this,” the DGP stated.

Wangchuk stands accused of inciting violence in Leh on Wednesday, an incident that tragically resulted in four deaths and several injuries.

### Legal Actions and Investigations

Sonam Wangchuk has been detained under the National Security Act and transferred to a jail in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. The investigation is ongoing, focusing on possible foreign funding and violations of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA).

Highlighting Wangchuk’s travel history, DGP Jamwal described his foreign visits as suspicious. These include his participation in an event organized by Pakistan’s *Dawn* newspaper and a trip to Bangladesh.

### Accusations of Instigating Violence

Jamwal accused Wangchuk of attempting to “hijack the platform” and disrupt dialogue between the Central government and local representatives.

Despite being aware of an informal meeting scheduled for September 25, Wangchuk reportedly continued his hunger strike. The DGP claimed there was “a deliberate attempt to vitiate the atmosphere through provocative videos and statements,” which contributed to the violence on Wednesday.

### Ongoing Probe and Broader Concerns

The DGP also referenced Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta’s remarks suggesting the presence of a foreign hand in the violence. Notably, three Nepalese citizens were hospitalized with bullet injuries during the unrest.

Investigations into the involvement of others are ongoing. So far, 50 individuals have been arrested in connection with the violence, including at least six identified as suspected ringleaders.

### Summary

The Ladakh police continue to probe Sonam Wangchuk’s alleged links with Pakistan and foreign entities, as well as his role in the recent unrest. Authorities are also investigating potential violations of the FCRA and examining the involvement of external actors in the violence.
