VIDEO: Peter, Paul and Mary’s “Light One Candle” — in Yiddish
If, like me, you enjoy listening to old recordings of the iconic folk group Peter, Paul and Mary, you may want to check this out: a new Yiddish version of their Hanukkah song “Light One Candle,” sung by another talented trio Rabbi Avram, Elisha and Sarah Mlotek. (A transliteration of the lyrics appears beneath the video below.) The three siblings are the grown children of Zalmen Mlotek, musician and director of the Yiddish National Theater Folksbiene, and his wife, Debbie Mlotek. Rabbi Avram is a writer, Elisha is a filmmaker and Sarah is studying music at a conservatory in Israel and just became a mom. Their singing is backed up by C. Joseph Lanzbom on guitar and Elisha on percussion. The original song, which was written by Peter Yarrow, became an anthem for the Soviet Jewry movement in the 1980s, symbolizing their struggle for freedom. It was translated into Yiddish by the theater producer Moishe Rosenfeld and Avram Mlotek. “‘Light One Candle’ was one of our Bubbe’s favorite songs every time we got together for a Hanukkah sing-along,” Avram said. Their Bubbe was the renowned scholar of Yiddish song, Chana Mlotek. For many years, she and her husband, the Yiddish cultural activist Yosl Mlotek, ran a column about Yiddish songs and poetry in the Forward. Although Hanukkah is still a month away, Bubby Chana’s grandchildren had a meaningful reason for publishing it now: This week marks her yortzeit. Canton elementary students honor local veterans with special showcase
CANTON, MASS. (WHDH) — The hallways of Luce Elementary School in Canton were filled with cheers, clapping, and American flags as students welcomed dozens of local veterans of the Armed Forces who came to celebrate Veterans Day.
Students eagerly high-fived the heroes, some dressed in uniform, as they made their way past classrooms, lockers, and many smiling faces. The school noted that each veteran in attendance has a special connection to Canton. Some have children or grandchildren attending the school, while others are residents of the community.
After the warm welcome, the veterans joined the students in the school’s auditorium for a special program. The event began with the National Anthem, followed by a medley of Armed Forces anthems and a touching rendition of “Taps” performed by Canton Veterans Agent Arafat Knight.
The program also featured speeches from veterans and sixth-grade students who shared essays they had written specifically for this special day, honoring the service and sacrifices of those who have served the nation.

4 family members of Darren Bailey, GOP governor candidate, killed in Montana helicopter crash
The son of Republican candidate for governor Darren Bailey, along with two of Bailey’s grandchildren and daughter-in-law, were killed in a helicopter crash in Montana, the former state senator’s campaign announced early Thursday.
“On Wednesday evening, Darren and his wife, Cindy, received the heartbreaking news no parent ever wants to hear. Their son, Zachary, his wife, Kelsey, and their two young children, Vada Rose, age 12, and Samuel, age 7, tragically lost their lives in a helicopter accident in Montana,” the campaign said on Facebook.
The accident comes just weeks after Bailey announced his plans to run for the GOP nomination for governor for the second time. Bailey was the Republican nominee for the office in 2022 before losing by about 13 percentage points to Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker.
“Darren and Cindy are heartbroken by this unimaginable loss,” the Bailey campaign said on Facebook. “They are finding comfort in their faith, their family, and the prayers of so many who love and care for them. The Baileys deeply appreciate the kindness and support they have received and ask for privacy as they grieve and hold their loved ones close during this difficult time.”
Details of the crash were not immediately available.
In a statement on X, Governor JB Pritzker and his wife, MK, offered their condolences to the Bailey family.
“MK and I are devastated to learn of the tragic passing of Darren and Cindy Bailey’s son Zachary, daughter-in-law Kelsey, and their two young children Vada Rose and Samuel,” the governor said. “Our prayers and deep condolences are with the Baileys in this time of grief. May the memories of their loved ones be a blessing.”
This is a developing story.
