‘Dependence mustn’t turn into compulsion’: RSS chief amid US tariffs

**‘Dependence Mustn’t Turn into Compulsion’: RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat on US Tariffs**

*By Chanshimla Varah | October 2, 2025*

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has responded to the recent tariff policies imposed by the United States on Indian goods. Speaking at the Vijayadashami event in Nagpur, Bhagwat remarked that the US tariff measures are primarily designed to safeguard their own national interests.

He emphasized the reality of global interdependence but cautioned that such reliance should never amount to compulsion. “We must move towards swadeshi and self-reliance; there is no alternative. Our harmony must be our own,” he stated.

**Regional Stability: Concerns Over Neighboring Countries**

Addressing recent unrest in neighboring nations such as Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, Bhagwat warned that such disturbances could invite foreign interference. He stressed that violent uprisings only lead to anarchy and instability.

“Those who seek to create disturbances in Bharat are active both inside and outside our country,” he said. Highlighting the distinction between democratic movements and violent revolts, Bhagwat recalled historical examples: “Democratic movements bring change; violent uprisings don’t. France rose against its king and Napoleon became emperor. So many so-called socialist movements happened, and all these socialist countries are now capitalist.”

**National Harmony: Embracing Diversity and Fair Administration**

Speaking on India’s diverse social fabric, the RSS chief underlined the importance of embracing differences within the bounds of law. He condemned acts that provoke communal tensions and urged for fair and impartial administration.

“The administration must act fairly, but the youth must also stay alert and intervene if needed. The grammar of anarchy needs to be stopped,” he added, condemning the ‘us vs them’ mentality as unacceptable.

**Economic Focus: The Drive Towards ‘Make in India’**

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent calls to promote swadeshi products and self-sufficiency align with Bhagwat’s message. Modi has urged Indians to reduce dependency on foreign-made goods and consciously choose products made in India.

“Often, we don’t even know if the comb in our pocket is made in India or abroad. We should buy products that are made in India, crafted through the hard work of our country’s youth—products that carry the sweat of our sons and daughters,” the Prime Minister said in one of his speeches.

The emphasis on self-reliance and indigenous production by both the RSS chief and the Prime Minister underscores a growing national narrative that advocates economic independence and cultural harmony amid global challenges.

Zubeen Garg death case: Manager and organiser held in Delhi

Zubeen Garg’s manager Siddhartha Sharma and festival chief organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta were arrested from Delhi on Wednesday morning in connection with the singer’s death in Singapore last month, Assam Police confirmed.

The duo has been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, criminal conspiracy, and causing death by negligence. Following their arrest, they were brought to Guwahati and produced before the Kamrup Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court, which sent them to 14 days of police custody.

Since the courts were closed for Durga Puja, the hearing took place at the residence of the judge.

Special DGP (CID) Munna Prasad Gupta stated that investigations into the singer’s death will be conducted in accordance with the law. A lookout notice through Interpol had already been issued against both individuals. Based on this notice, immigration authorities detained Mahanta when he arrived at Delhi airport from Singapore and handed him over to Assam Police.

Regarding Sharma, Gupta said, “We tracked his location to Delhi and Rajasthan. Last night, we located him near the Delhi-Haryana border and arrested him.”

The state government recently banned Mahanta, the chief organiser of the North East Festival — which Garg had attended in Singapore before his death — from holding any function or event in Assam.

Zubeen Garg’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, expressed her full faith in the investigating team and hoped that they would soon uncover what exactly happened.

The Assam government had earlier constituted a 10-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the singer’s death in Singapore, which allegedly occurred due to drowning on September 19.

Hamas accepting proposal could end war now: Trump

US President Donald Trump stated on Monday (local time) that the Gaza peace proposal, if accepted by Hamas, would mean the immediate end of the war. He made these remarks during a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

According to the proposal, if Hamas accepts, all remaining hostages would be released immediately, within 72 hours. Trump emphasized that this would signify the immediate end of the war itself, not just in Gaza.

Arab and Muslim countries have committed in writing to demilitarize Gaza and to decommission the military capabilities of Hamas and all other terror organizations immediately. This includes destroying all terror infrastructure, such as tunnels, weapons, and production facilities. “They have a lot of production facilities that were destroying,” Trump noted.

Expressing hope for an end to the violence, Trump said that Arab and Muslim countries likely have an understanding of how to deal with Hamas. He added that all parties would agree on a timeline for Israeli forces to withdraw in phases.

“No more shooting, hopefully,” Trump said. He stressed that as progress is made toward achieving these goals, Arab and Muslim nations need to be given the chance to fulfill their commitments in dealing with Hamas. However, if they are unable to do so, Israel would have the absolute right and full US backing to take further action.

“Israel will have my fallback to finish the job of destroying the threat of Hamas,” Trump added.

While not ruling out the possibility of Hamas rejecting the deal, Trump reiterated his full support to Israel in addressing the danger posed by Hamas.

Prime Minister Netanyahu detailed the plan, including the disarming of Hamas. He called for a peaceful civilian administration to govern Gaza and explicitly ruled out any role for Hamas or the Palestinian Authority.

“All our hostages, alive and dead, will return home. Hamas will be disarmed. Gaza will be demilitarized. Israel will retain security responsibility, including a security perimeter for the foreseeable future,” Netanyahu said.

He continued, “Gaza will have a peaceful civilian administration, run neither by Hamas nor by the Palestinian Authority. If Hamas agrees to your plan, the first step will be a withdrawal, followed by the release of all our hostages within 72 hours.”

World Para Athletics Championships 2025, Day 3: India Adds Two New Medals to Their Tally

India’s Medal Hunt Accelerates on Day 3 at the World Para Athletics Championships

India’s quest for medals at the World Para Athletics Championships gained significant momentum on Day 3, as the nation added a gold and a silver to its tally. This impressive performance lifted India’s total medal count to five, following a medal-less Day 2 after a strong start on Day 1 that yielded three medals.

### Dual Podium Finish in Men’s Javelin Throw F46

The highlight of the day was the Men’s Javelin Throw F46 event, where India celebrated a spectacular one-two finish. Rinku Hooda clinched the gold medal, breaking the Championship Record with an opening throw of 63.81m. He further improved his mark to a winning distance of 66.37m on his fourth attempt.

Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 bronze medallist Sundar Singh Gurjar secured the silver medal. Gurjar briefly took the lead after his third throw of 64.11m, but his best effort of 64.76m on the fifth attempt placed him just behind Hooda. The bronze medal was claimed by Cuba’s Guillermo Varona Gonzalez with a throw of 63.34m.

### Near Podium Finishes for Other Indian Athletes

While the javelin throw brought glory, other Indian athletes fought valiantly but narrowly missed the podium. In the Men’s Javelin Throw F46 final, besides Hooda and Gurjar, Ajeet Singh finished fourth with a best throw of 61.77m, just shy of a medal.

In the Women’s Javelin Throw F46 final, Bhavanaben Ajabaji secured eighth place with a throw measuring 35.34m.

### Strong Performances in Men’s 100m T37 Heats

Indian sprinters also showed promise on Day 3. Rakeshbhai Bhatt and Shreyansh Trivedi competed in the Men’s 100m T37 Round 1 heats. Rakeshbhai finished third in his heat with a time of 11.62 seconds, setting a new personal best. Shreyansh Trivedi finished second in his heat clocking 11.94 seconds, also a personal best.

Both athletes advanced from the heats, fueling India’s hopes for a medal in the Men’s 100m T37 final.

### Looking Ahead

With Day 3’s successes providing a boost, the Indian contingent looks forward to Day 4 of the World Para Athletics Championships with great anticipation. More thrilling performances and potential medals await as the competition intensifies. Stay tuned for further updates!

‘Old men afraid of death’: Obama’s veiled jab at Trump

**‘Old Men Afraid of Death’: Obama’s Veiled Jab at Donald Trump**

*By Snehil Singh | Sep 27, 2025, 03:20 PM*

Former United States President Barack Obama recently made remarks that many interpreted as a subtle criticism of his successor, Donald Trump. Speaking to British historian David Olusoga in London, Obama stated, “It’s fair to say that 80% of the world’s problems involve old men hanging on who are afraid of death and insignificance.” He elaborated that such men build “pyramids” and put their names on everything out of anxiety.

### A Subtle Reference to Trump’s Age

Obama’s comments come just a month after 77-year-old Donald Trump defended his controversial decision to deploy National Guard troops in Washington, DC. Trump justified the deployment by citing the need to address what he described as an explosion of violent crime.

These remarks also resonate with Obama’s previous criticisms of aging political leaders. In 2019, Obama pointed out that older leaders often fail to step aside for younger generations, highlighting generational tensions in leadership.

### Criticism Over Public Health Statements

During the same London event, Obama took aim at Trump for making unfounded claims linking the painkiller Tylenol to autism in infants. He condemned such statements as “violence against the truth,” warning that they could undermine public health efforts and potentially harm pregnant women.

Trump’s comments on Tylenol drew widespread backlash. The UK Health Secretary, Wes Streeting, publicly advised women to ignore these claims.

### The Political Tug of War

Obama also reflected on the current political landscape in America, describing it as a “tug of war” between two competing visions for the country’s future.

He explained that while progressives seek change through democratic means, populists like Trump aim to revert to an older, more traditional worldview. Obama further criticized progressives for being “complacent” and “smug” in past decades, acknowledging that their values are now being tested in these challenging times.

Barack Obama’s recent remarks highlight the ongoing generational and ideological battles shaping the American political arena, with pointed references that many have connected directly to Donald Trump’s leadership style and rhetoric.
