David’s pick sets up winning FG as Bucs beat Seahawks 38-35 in duel between Mayfield and Darnold

SEATTLE (AP) — Lavonte David slid toward the middle of the field in anticipation as Buccaneers teammate Antoine Winfield Jr. pressured Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold. After a deflection off defensive end Logan Hall’s helmet, David found himself in the right spot to intercept Darnold with 58 seconds left.

His pick set up Chase McLaughlin’s 39-yard field goal as time expired, and Tampa Bay escaped with a thrilling 38-35 win over Seattle on Sunday.

“Got a good read, and was able to make it to a good spot to read the quarterback,” David said. “When I (saw) the ball coming in the air, I had to have it.”

Baker Mayfield tied it for the Bucs (4-1) by throwing an 11-yard touchdown pass to Sterling Shepard with 1:08 remaining. That left time for Darnold and the Seahawks (3-2), but David made one of the few standout defensive plays in a game dominated by offense as the teams combined for 889 yards.

In a duel between quarterbacks who struggled with the teams that drafted them, then spent a season together in Carolina before reviving their careers elsewhere, Mayfield and Darnold combined to throw for 720 yards with just 10 incompletions.

Mayfield finished 29 of 33 for 379 yards and two touchdowns, and his 87.9% completion percentage was the highest by any quarterback in a game this season. The Bucs needed every one of those successful throws to bounce back from last week’s loss to Philadelphia.

“He was sharp,” Tampa Bay coach Todd Bowles said. “Baker doesn’t try to have two subpar games in a row. He was still (ticked) from last week.”

Darnold was 28 of 34 for 341 yards with four TDs and the one costly interception while throwing off his back foot toward the middle of the field.

“At the end of the day,” Darnold said, “I got to protect the football in that situation and can’t give them a short field to put the game away like that.”

Tampa Bay took over at the Seattle 36. Rachaad White ran three times for 15 yards to get the Bucs well within McLaughlin’s range, Mayfield took a knee to run the clock down, and McLaughlin ended it with his third field goal of the day.

Entering the afternoon, Seattle’s defense had allowed the third-fewest points in the NFL. But without injured regulars DeMarcus Lawrence, Julian Love and Devon Witherspoon, the Seahawks struggled to slow down the Bucs, who converted 7 of 11 third downs.

“I have to do better with our defensive game plan and execution and how we call it,” coach Mike Macdonald said. “When you put up a performance like that, it means that I didn’t prepare them well enough. It hurts. It stings.”

Tampa Bay led 13-0 late in the second quarter thanks to two field goals by McLaughlin and one of two rushing TDs by White, but Seattle went ahead 14-13 early in the third on a 5-yard TD run by Zach Charbonnet.

The Bucs pushed back ahead 28-21 near the end of the period. Darnold threw two TD passes in the fourth quarter, the second a 21-yarder to Tory Horton that gave Seattle a 35-28 lead.

“Sam was great. Played a tremendous football game,” Macdonald said. “Thought we were going to have a chance to win the game there at the end.”

Instead, Tampa Bay became the first team in NFL history with four wins by three points or fewer in its first five games.

“I think this was the fourth two-minute drive that we’ve had this year out of five games,” wide receiver Emeka Egbuka said. “NFL is down to the wire a lot of the time. So, you have to have someone at quarterback that has that capability, and Baker has that for sure.”

**Buckeyes Have a Big Day**

Two receivers out of Ohio State were the main beneficiaries of the high-level quarterback play. Egbuka had seven catches for 163 yards and a touchdown while Seattle’s Jaxon Smith-Njigba finished with eight receptions for 132 yards and a score.

Mayfield, in his eighth season, said he’s never seen a rookie who’s more prepared than Egbuka.

“He’s well-rounded, and not just in football but in life,” Mayfield said. “I think he’s grounded, and I think he’s genuine in everything he does. He’s intentional, and you just don’t see that often.”

Egbuka leads all rookies with 445 receiving yards.

**Barner Breaks Out**

Seahawks tight end AJ Barner has four touchdown catches this year, matching his total from last season. Barner, in his second year out of Michigan, caught all seven passes thrown to him, including two for TDs.

The Seahawks released veteran Noah Fant in the offseason, clearing the way for Barner to break out.

“I am able to get open, get an opportunity, and I feel like Seattle’s a great fit for me,” Barner said.

**Sick Kicker McLaughlin**

McLaughlin, who went 3 of 3 on field goals, was on the Bucs’ injury report Saturday with an illness.

“He probably needs to be ill more often,” Bowles said. “It wasn’t quite the Michael Jordan flu game, but give Chase McLaughlin his flu game here in Seattle. He did a heck of a job.”

**Injuries**

– **Buccaneers:** RB Josh Williams was evaluated for a concussion in the third quarter and did not return.

– **Seahawks:** LB Derick Hall sustained an oblique injury and CB Riq Woolen was evaluated for a concussion, forcing both out of the game.

**Up Next**

– **Buccaneers:** Host San Francisco next Sunday.

– **Seahawks:** Visit Jacksonville next Sunday.

Malik Nabers good to go for Jaxson Dart’s starting debut

Wide receiver Malik Nabers will be available as a target for Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart in the rookie’s first NFL start.

Nabers did not practice on Wednesday and was limited on Thursday, but he did not receive an injury designation for Sunday’s home game against the Chargers. Although he was again limited on Friday, Nabers is listed with a shoulder injury and is expected to play.

Jaxson Dart will be the fifth starting quarterback for the Giants since Nabers joined the team as a first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

In other injury news, the Giants have ruled out kicker Graham Gano (groin), defensive lineman Chauncey Golston (ankle), and running back Tyrone Tracy (shoulder) for Sunday’s game. Defensive lineman Rakeem Nunez-Roches (foot) is the only player listed as questionable heading into the matchup.

Patriots define 'bad football,' but Steelers still nearly lets it slip away

**FOXBOROUGH — Mike Vrabel’s Lesson in Taking Advantage of Opportunities**

When Mike Vrabel was hired as head coach of the New England Patriots before the 2025 season, he made a very telling statement about the team’s expectations for the future.

“We just want to be good enough to take advantage of bad football,” Vrabel said during his introductory press conference in January. “That’s where we’re going to start.”

However, in Sunday’s Week 3 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Patriots themselves played some very bad football at key moments — mistakes that ultimately led to their loss. Fortunately for New England, the Steelers did not capitalize fully on these opportunities, perhaps forgetting Vrabel’s lesson about taking advantage of opponents’ errors.

The Patriots finished the game with five turnovers. Two of those were fumbles by running back Rhamondre Stevenson, while Antonio Gibson added another fumble. Quarterback Drake Maye contributed both an interception and a fumble.

How can a team expect to win a game when they give away that many chances to their opponent?

“It was a tough lesson for us,” Vrabel admitted after the loss. “We don’t need to lose a football game to know that turnovers are very hard to overcome. They erase all the good things that you do. They take away momentum. They take away points and give the other team good field position.”

“We didn’t need to turn it over as many times as we did to learn that lesson. I think we knew it before. It was very unfortunate. We just have to not give them so many chances with the turnovers. We have to take care of those things,” he added.

“There’s a lot to clean up. There’s a lot of good in there, but unfortunately just not enough to get us the win or to really have any sort of advantage in a football game. Every time I felt like we were going to take the momentum and be able to score and move forward, and the defense did a great job there, it ended up being one too many opportunities for their side.”

There have been flashes of brilliance this season, and the team appears to have everything needed to win in this league. But ultimately, they continue to beat themselves with costly mistakes.

The first step for the Patriots is clear: eliminate the bad football. From there, they must develop the ability to consistently take advantage of opponents’ errors. With Mike Vrabel’s strong leadership and accountability, along with the leadership within the locker room, that progress seems well within reach.

Mensah, Castle lead Duke to comeback past N.C. State, 45-33

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Darian Mensah threw three touchdown passes as Duke snapped a two-game losing streak, overcoming a 13-point deficit to beat N.C. State 45-33 on Saturday.

The Blue Devils (2-2, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference opener) scored 21 points in less than four minutes of game time spanning the two halves to surge into the lead. Anderson Castle added three rushing touchdowns, including a clinching 66-yard dash on third down with 2:19 remaining.

For N.C. State (3-1, 1-1), CJ Bailey tossed two touchdown passes to Terrell Anderson but was intercepted three times. Hollywood Smothers rushed for 123 yards and one touchdown, while Will Wilson had two 1-yard TD runs. Anderson picked up 166 yards on six catches.

Mensah was 19-for-28 for 269 yards passing. Castle gained 92 rushing yards on 12 attempts.

N.C. State drove 99 yards to score on the second play of the second quarter on Bailey’s 6-yard throw to Anderson and later extended the lead to 20-7. However, a pivotal play came inside of two minutes in the first half when Duke linebacker Tre Freeman intercepted Bailey’s fourth-down pass, returning it 67 yards to set up a go-ahead 1-yard touchdown run from Castle.

**The Takeaway**

*N.C. State:* The Wolfpack racked up 535 yards of total offense but experienced too many defensive lapses to secure a second consecutive in-state road victory.

*Duke:* The Blue Devils were at minus-6 in turnover margin entering the game, but their plus-4 effort proved crucial in toppling the Wolfpack for the third season in a row. Duke, which also blocked a third-quarter field goal attempt, has now won five of the last six meetings.

**Up Next**

– *N.C. State:* Saturday at home vs. Virginia Tech
– *Duke:* Saturday at Syracuse
