Russia’s top diplomat has assured world leaders that his nation has no intention of attacking Europe. However, he warned that any aggression against Russia would be met with a decisive response.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made these remarks amid rising concerns in Europe over unauthorized flights into NATO airspace. These incidents have been attributed to Russia, especially following NATO jets downing drones over Poland and Estonia’s claims that Russian fighter jets entered its territory.

Russia has denied these accusations, stating that its planes did not enter Estonian airspace and that the drones were not targeting Poland. Moscow’s ally Belarus suggested that Ukrainian signal-jamming caused the drones to go off course.

Lavrov emphasized that Russia perceives itself as the party facing threats. “Russia has never had and does not have any such intentions of attacking European or NATO countries,” he said. “However, any aggression against my country will be met with a decisive response.”

These statements come three years into Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, an action widely condemned by the international community.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump expressed optimism this week that Ukraine can reclaim all the territories lost to Russia. Just three weeks prior, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Russia and the US had reached a mutual understanding, praising the previous Trump administration for “listening to us.”

Trump’s new stance followed a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday. This meeting, occurring seven months after a heated televised exchange between the two in the Oval Office, was conducted behind closed doors and reportedly had a much more positive tone. Zelensky described it as “a good meeting” during his address to the assembly the following day.

For the fourth consecutive year, President Zelensky appealed to the gathering of world leaders, urging them to expel Russia from Ukraine. He warned that failure to act could endanger other countries, stating, “Ukraine is only the first.”

Russia has offered various justifications for its war in Ukraine, including concerns over its own security following NATO’s eastward expansion over the years.

Slovakia passes constitutional amendment recognising only two sexes

Slovakia’s parliament has passed a constitutional amendment recognizing only two sexes, along with other measures that critics say may breach the country’s international obligations and undermine human rights protections.

The amendment, drafted by the government of populist Prime Minister Robert Fico, required a three-fifths majority to pass. It was approved with 90 votes in the 150-seat National Council, with support from twelve conservative opposition politicians who helped the ruling coalition secure the vote.

Justice Minister Boris Susko told parliament that the amendment aims to bolster traditional values. However, the move has faced strong condemnation from human rights organizations.

Amnesty International criticized the decision, stating: “Today, the Slovak government chose to follow the lead of countries such as Hungary, whose policies have led to an erosion of human rights.”

Michael O’Flaherty, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, had previously urged Slovak politicians not to approve the changes. He warned that “seeking to disapply specific rights because they touch upon ‘national identity’ would be fundamentally incompatible with the Slovak Republic’s international obligations.”

O’Flaherty also highlighted that the amendment denies the realities of trans and intersex people and may negatively affect human rights guarantees, including access to legal gender recognition.

Robert Fico has long been a divisive figure in Slovak politics. Critics argue that under his leadership, Slovakia has abandoned its pro-Western trajectory, instead aligning more closely with Hungary under Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

Europe’s Jon Rahm got the 45th Ryder Cup underway in a frenzied atmosphere on the first tee at Bethpage Black on Friday. On a day when United States President Donald Trump was due to visit, Europe hoped to make a strong start in their defence of the trophy.

Rahm was playing alongside Tyrrell Hatton in the opening foursomes match against Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas of the US. The hosts were backed by the majority in a lively crowd, but it was Rahm who had the honour of playing the first shot at 7:10 am local time (12:10 pm UK).

The Spaniard played a nervy opener before DeChambeau launched the host’s challenge with a superb straight drive, followed by a birdie putt to win the hole.

Prior to the start, DeChambeau and Thomas, carrying a US flag, had entered the arena to a huge roar from the crowd gathered in the 5,000-capacity grandstand at the first tee. US captain Keegan Bradley had earlier encouraged fans to raise the volume, adding to the vibrant atmosphere.

There was also an early taste of the potential hostility to come as European linchpin Rory McIlroy was booed when shown practising on the large screen.

The opening match was set to be followed by three more in the morning session. In match two, Ludvig Aberg and Matt Fitzpatrick faced world number one Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley. Europe’s strong pairing of world number two McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood, who both won their foursomes outings in 2023, took on Collin Morikawa and Harris English. Robert MacIntyre and Viktor Hovland completed the morning proceedings against Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay.

Trump’s visit prompted a huge increase in security measures, and he was expected to arrive at Bethpage prior to the start of the afternoon fourballs session. Gates opened at 5 am to allow the crowd ample time to enter the course, with many heading straight to the first tee to soak up the electric atmosphere.
