Ducks quick passing game kept sluggish offense moving during CFP victory

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – No. 5 Oregon’s offense hoped to cut loose against No. 4 Texas Tech’s formidable defense during their College Football Playoff quarterfinal Thursday at the Orange Bowl. But the Ducks were also fully prepared to accept that the Red Raiders’ pass rush, ranked No. 3 nationally with 3.2 sacks per game, and their stout run defense could force adjustments.

That reality came early. Oregon quarterback Dante Moore and his receivers proved efficient enough in the short passing game to generate the offense needed during a 23-0 victory at Hard Rock Stadium.

The redshirt sophomore completed 26 of 33 passes to 11 different receivers for 234 yards with one interception.

“Of course, everybody loves the deep throw,” Moore said. “Everybody likes the long runs. But like Coach (Dan) Lanning said, you’ve got to keep chipping away.”

Moore did not throw a touchdown pass for just the third game this season. The earlier instances came during rain-soaked games at home against Wisconsin and at Iowa, where the Ducks leaned heavily on their rushing attack. Thursday’s game, played under sunny Florida skies, seemed perfect for a more robust aerial display. However, the Ducks struggled to provide adequate pass protection, limiting opportunities for receivers to get open downfield.

Part of the challenge stemmed from Texas Tech’s defensive dominance on the ground, holding Oregon to just 64 yards rushing on 47 carries. This allowed the Red Raiders’ pass rushers to relentlessly pursue Moore. Texas Tech sacked Moore twice while applying frequent pressure throughout the game.

Despite the pressure, Moore remained crisp in the short passing game, keeping the chains moving, producing field goal attempts, winning the field position battle, and supporting Oregon’s defense, which dominated the Red Raiders.

Of Oregon’s 16 first downs, 11 came through the air, as Moore countered the pass rush with quick, accurate throws.

“Shout out to Texas Tech, they have a good front, but we just knew we had to get it quick and fast,” said Oregon wide receiver Malik Benson, who caught five passes for 51 yards. “Whatever we have to do to get it done, that’s just the way it had to be.”

Seven of Moore’s completions came on quick passes to four running backs for 51 yards. Dierre Hill Jr. caught three passes, while Jordon Davison and Jayden Limar had one reception each. Noah Whittington snagged two.

Limar’s 27-yard reception on a short flat route in the fourth quarter was the team’s longest of the game. On the play, Moore took a quick look upfield before dumping off to a wide-open Limar.

“That comes with having a good quarterback,” Whittington said. “Quick reads. See the defense. See the coverage. He knows where his answers are at.”

The quick passes kept Moore’s receivers active and kept Texas Tech’s secondary on its heels.

“And it helps out the O-line,” Davison added.

On the defensive side, Oregon applied similar pressure to Texas Tech quarterback Behren Morton. The Ducks held the Red Raiders to 78 yards rushing on 30 carries and sacked Morton four times.

However, unlike Moore, Morton struggled to find rhythm. The fifth-year senior completed 18 of 32 passes for 137 yards with two interceptions.

Moore’s poise under pressure impressed his teammates.

“When you don’t have time, you’ve got to make those quick decisions,” Whittington said. “That’s a huge trait for a young quarterback.”

Whittington and tight end Kenyon Sadiq, who caught four passes for 22 yards, praised Texas Tech’s defense, especially its pass rush led by linebacker David Bailey, whose 13.5 sacks ranked second nationally.

Moore’s ability not to hold onto the ball too long or force passes into coverage makes him special, Sadiq said.

“He’s not one-dimensional,” Sadiq explained. “He’s able to do so many things. Those little quick dinks and dunks are huge. It’s not easy when there’s pressure in your face almost every play.”

Looking ahead, Moore might have to replicate this type of performance in Oregon’s next game against No. 1 Indiana (14-0) in the semifinals on January 9 in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta.

The Hoosiers won 38-3 over No. 9 Alabama in their quarterfinal game at the Rose Bowl following Oregon’s victory. Notably, Oregon’s lone loss this season was a 30-20 home defeat to Indiana, a game in which the Hoosiers sacked Moore six times and limited the Ducks to just 13 points.

After Thursday’s game, Oregon coach Dan Lanning was uncertain of the next opponent but acknowledged there was room for improvement on offense.

“There’s some plays we were really efficient at today, and then there were some plays that weren’t,” Lanning said. “When you have a player like David Bailey, when you have players that you’re going to see in the College Football Playoff, you’ve got to have a plan for them. At times our plan was really good, and then there was sometimes that we could certainly improve that.”

Marlon Humphrey thanks NFL scriptwriters for setting up Ravens-Steelers showdown

The Baltimore Ravens did their part in Week 17 of the NFL season. Needing a win and a Pittsburgh Steelers loss to stay alive in the playoff hunt, the Ravens delivered an impressive performance. Derrick Henry led the charge with a remarkable 216-yard, four-touchdown eruption, powering Baltimore to a victory over the Green Bay Packers.

The Ravens also got a crucial boost from the Cleveland Browns, who defeated the Steelers. This Week 17 victory by Cleveland set the stage for a winner-take-all showdown for the AFC North division title in the season finale. The 8-8 Ravens will face the 9-7 Steelers in Pittsburgh on Sunday, with the division crown on the line.

Marlon Humphrey is embracing the intensity of the upcoming clash. “The NFL script writers, they did a good job with this one,” Humphrey joked, according to ESPN’s Jamison Hensley. The Ravens cornerback is clearly excited about the bitter rivals facing off in a decisive Week 18 matchup.

The Steelers, meanwhile, could have avoided this do-or-die scenario by beating the Browns last Sunday. Pittsburgh had the chance to clinch its first division title since 2020 but fell short in a sluggish 13-6 loss where neither team managed to surpass 300 total yards of offense.

Now, the Ravens have an opportunity to capture their third straight AFC North championship. Coming into Week 17, Baltimore looked nearly out of contention, trailing Pittsburgh by two games and playing without their star quarterback, Lamar Jackson. However, the Ravens’ victory keeps their playoff hopes alive, with a No. 4 seed and a home playoff game on the line this Sunday.

Jackson returned to full practice on Wednesday after missing time due to a back injury. While his availability for the critical season finale remains uncertain, his participation in practice is a positive sign that he will suit up.

Pittsburgh won’t be at full strength when Baltimore arrives. Wide receiver DK Metcalf will miss a second consecutive game following a suspension related to an altercation with a fan. Metcalf’s absence has significantly impacted the Steelers’ offense, which has struggled without him.

With so much at stake, this AFC North showdown promises to be a thrilling and high-stakes battle. Ravens and Steelers fans alike will be eagerly anticipating the decisive game that will crown the division champion.

Quinn Gray gets massive support from Florida A&M coaching legend

Quinn Gray is now officially the head coach of Florida A&M, and he’s already receiving a ringing endorsement from a coaching legend with whom he’s very familiar.

In a promo posted by the O&G Strike Zone to secure donations for the football program, legendary Florida A&M coach Billy Joe spoke highly of Gray and gave his former player a strong endorsement.

“He was a member of my FAMU program from 1997 to 2001—five years. Those five years were FAMU’s golden years. We never lost to BCU during that time. We made the NCAA playoffs five straight years, and Quinn ran my Gulf Coast offense with precision and intelligence,” Joe said.

“We beat Troy State University twice and blew out Appalachian State on their own home field during those playoff runs. No HBCU football team has ever won three games in the NCAA playoffs in Division I-AA,” he continued. “No SWAC team has ever won a game in the NCAA playoffs. Quinn will bring the golden years back to FAMU, but he needs your help.”

Gray was one of Billy Joe’s greatest players during his tenure with the Rattlers. Serving as the signal caller in Joe’s “Gulf Coast Offense,” Gray eventually became the Rattlers’ all-time leader in passing yards (7,378), pass attempts (1,113), pass completions (562), and touchdown passes (57).

It’s clear that Gray learned a lot as a player under Joe’s mentorship, as his teams have demonstrated a penchant for moving the ball through the air quickly and efficiently.

In 2022, Gray became the head coach of Albany State, where he led the team to two SIAC Championship appearances, ultimately winning the conference title in November. The team also earned the top seed in NCAA Super Region Two in the Division II playoffs, advancing to the regional final with wins over Valdosta State and Benedict.

On December 6th, Albany State concluded a historic 12-2 season with a 31-24 loss to Newberry.

Perhaps Gray can be the coach that Florida A&M faithful believe he can be—carving out his own legacy similar to what Billy Joe accomplished during his time.

Bison women forge best winning streak in 20 years

**NDSU Women’s Basketball Rolls to Ninth Straight Win, Longest Streak in Two Decades**

FARGO — Putting together a women’s basketball schedule for North Dakota State in the 2004-05 season was more of an open invitation than anything, with no school deemed unworthy of a game. That original schedule even included a team in South Dakota—the now-defunct Si Tanka-Huron—that then-head coach Amy Ruley had never heard of. Si Tanka-Huron came to Fargo for a Saturday afternoon game in February, just a few months before the college permanently closed.

That season, the Bison notched 28 wins, starting with an impressive 26-game winning streak until a trip to high-major Texas Christian University (TCU) ended their run.

Why does that history matter now?

On Monday, NDSU defeated Saint Mary’s University (Minn.) 94-36 to secure its ninth straight victory, marking the longest winning streak for the program since that landmark 2004-05 reclassification season two decades ago.

Bison head coach Jory Collins emphasized focusing on the present, especially with Summit League play kicking off this week. Still, he acknowledged the significance of the streak in the program’s recent history.

“That’s something to be proud of,” said Bison forward Avery Koenen. “It doesn’t really surprise me with this team and I’m just super proud of how we’ve handled everything. To go on the road the last few weeks and come out with those wins is huge.”

Twenty years ago, after leaving the Division II North Central Conference, the Bison played as an independent without a league affiliation.

“But we still went after each game as if it were an important conference game,” Ruley recalled.

This year’s squad has adopted a similar mentality and has not lost since mid-November, when they fell to the University of Nebraska.

Others are taking notice of NDSU’s hot streak. The Bison were ranked 15th in the latest mid-major poll, which comprises the 23 Division I leagues outside the Power 4 conferences plus four others.

**Key Players Leading the Charge**

– *Avery Koenen* is averaging a double-double with 18.5 points and 10.2 rebounds per game.
– *Karrington Asp*, a 6-2 freshman forward, has emerged as a key contributor, averaging 12.4 points and 5.7 rebounds.
– *Guard Marisa Frost* is also putting up 12.4 points per game.

The addition of transfer guard *Jocelyn Schiller* running the point guard position has provided the team with greater completeness and balance.

“I liken them to some of our teams of old,” Ruley said. “I feel like they like each other as far as playing together, and you see that enthusiasm and camaraderie that seems to be out there. You have all the pieces.”

**Looking Ahead to Summit League Play**

The pieces now turn their attention toward Summit League play, which begins Thursday at Oral Roberts University and continues Saturday at the University of Denver. The conference home opener is scheduled for January 8 against Kansas City.

Oral Roberts enters league play with a 6-6 record after enduring an early five-game losing streak. Defending champion South Dakota State (10-4) is once again the league favorite, while the University of South Dakota is off to a solid 9-4 start.

“We start Summit League play and I think it’s pretty obvious what you’re up against and what’s won the league the last few years,” Collins said. “We’re going to have to win a whole bunch of games if we want to be in contention.”

Koenen added, “These are the games that matter a lot more going forward. You have to focus on what’s ahead.”

**Dominant Performance Against Saint Mary’s**

On Monday, the Division III Cardinals of the MIAC, who came in with a 9-1 record, faced a sharp NDSU team that hadn’t played in 12 days. The Bison jumped out early with a dominant 22-2 lead after the first quarter.

Koenen finished with 19 points and 7 rebounds in just 21 minutes, ending a streak of six straight games with a double-double. Five NDSU players reached double figures in scoring.

NDSU held backup guard Abby Graham out as a precaution following a minor injury.

“I think our confidence is really high right now, especially coming after a break and playing that hard,” Frost said.

With momentum building, the Bison hope to carry this energy into the crucial stretch of Summit League competition ahead.
