Tamil Nadu cancels licence of Sresan Pharmaceuticals, shuts down company

The Tamil Nadu state health department has confirmed the shutdown of Sresan Pharmaceuticals following an investigation that revealed the presence of toxic contaminants, specifically Diethylene Glycol (DEG), in their product Coldrif syrup. This development comes after multiple deaths have been linked to the consumption of the adulterated medicine.

In response to the findings, the health department has ordered comprehensive inspections across all pharmaceutical manufacturing units throughout Tamil Nadu. Large-scale inspections are currently underway to ensure compliance with safety standards, ANI reported.

On October 9, the owner of Sresan Pharmaceuticals, Ranganathan, was arrested in Chennai by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) from Madhya Pradesh. He has been remanded in 10-day police custody by a Parasia court. Additionally, two senior drug inspectors have been suspended due to dereliction of duty, as reported by ANI.

The Tamil Nadu government has reiterated its directive for thorough inspections of all pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities in the state to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader K Annamalai criticized the Tamil Nadu government’s handling of the crisis. He highlighted that despite the deaths of 23 people in Madhya Pradesh and three children in Rajasthan linked to the toxic Coldrif syrup, only two drug inspectors had been suspended. Annamalai accused the state government of attempting to shirk responsibility.

“A drug manufactured by a private pharmaceutical company in Kanchipuram has reportedly caused multiple deaths, yet the Tamil Nadu government is trying to create an illusion of having no connection or accountability,” he said. He also underscored the company’s history of quality violations and the apparent lack of proper inspections by state drug authorities.

Meanwhile, the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has issued a directive to all states and Union Territories to ensure strict compliance with the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945. This includes mandatory testing of raw materials and finished pharmaceutical products before approval.

Earlier, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted searches at seven locations in Chennai linked to the Sresan Pharmaceuticals case, addressing money laundering charges connected to the Coldrif syrup deaths. Multiple ED teams from the Chennai Zonal Office carried out simultaneous raids based on specific intelligence inputs.

According to officials, searches are ongoing at premises including the residences of senior officials from the Tamil Nadu Drug Control Office. The agency is investigating financial transactions and suspected proceeds of crime related to the production and distribution of the adulterated medicine.

The deaths caused by toxic cough syrups have raised national concern and prompted swift regulatory actions. Following these events, the Delhi government banned the sale, purchase, and distribution of Coldrif syrup after declaring it “not of standard quality,” according to an official order dated October 10.

The order stated:
“Coldrif Syrup (Paracetamol, Phenylephrine Hydrochloride, Chlorpheniramine Maleate Syrup), manufactured in May 2025 by Sresan Pharmaceuticals in Tamil Nadu, was found to contain Diethylene Glycol (46.28% w/v), a toxic chemical known to be hazardous to human health.”

All stakeholders were directed to immediately halt the sale, purchase, and distribution of the affected batch. The public has been strongly advised against consuming the product due to its potential health risks.

This incident underscores the critical importance of stringent quality control and regulatory oversight within the pharmaceutical industry to safeguard public health.

As part of this collaboration, ICAI is finalizing a digital platform to facilitate mergers among CA firms, aiming to strengthen the domestic audit sector. These regulatory enhancements are expected to roll out in the coming months alongside the legislative changes.

**Proposed Amendments to Conflict-of-Interest Provisions**

In addition to partner composition reforms, amendments to Section 144 of the Companies Act are also being considered. Section 144 governs conflict-of-interest provisions, and the proposed changes intend to ensure the regulatory environment evolves in line with new business models in auditing and advisory services.

**Towards a Level Playing Field**

Collectively, these proposed amendments and policy initiatives are designed to create a more level playing field for Indian audit firms by enhancing their capacity to compete against international counterparts. The government’s focus on strengthening domestic capabilities signals a strategic move to nurture local talent and increase indigenous participation in the critical audit segment.

US: Four killed, 20 injured in South Carolina bar shooting

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting incident on St. Helena Island that left four people dead and several others injured.

According to a post on X, the Sheriff’s Office stated:
“Sheriff’s Office investigating shooting that injured multiple people on St. Helena.”

Officials reported that shortly before 1 a.m. on October 12, 2025, the Communications Center received numerous calls about a shooting at Willie’s Bar and Grill, located at 7 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive on St. Helena Island.

Upon arrival, deputies found a large crowd with several individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. It was learned that hundreds of people had gathered at the location when the shooting occurred. Multiple victims and witnesses reportedly ran to nearby businesses and properties seeking shelter from the gunfire.

Several victims were transported by Beaufort County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to area hospitals, while others arrived on their own seeking medical attention for injuries sustained during the incident.

At this time, at least 20 people have been injured, with four victims transported to hospitals in critical condition. Unfortunately, four victims were pronounced deceased at the scene. The names of the victims have not been released.

The Beaufort County Coroner’s Office will share additional information once next of kin have been notified.

“This is a tragic and difficult incident for everyone. We ask for your patience as we continue to investigate this incident. Our thoughts are with all of the victims and their loved ones,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

The Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating persons of interest and expressed appreciation for the support of multiple law enforcement agencies, area fire departments, and Beaufort County EMS personnel who assisted at the scene.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Investigator Master Sergeant Duncan at 843-255-3418. Residents are also encouraged to report suspicious or criminal activity through the non-emergency dispatch line at 843-524-2777 or by calling 844-TIPS-BFT (844-847-7238).

Siddhant Chaturvedi’s much-anticipated action creature film, tentatively titled *Ramree*, has been shelved by Netflix India due to budget constraints. The project, which was to mark the directorial debut of Neha Sharma (not to be confused with the actor), was also expected to star Mohit Raina alongside Chaturvedi.

**Production Challenges**

A source revealed to Mid-Day, “Work on the film had been going on for over a year. Given the subject and the period setting, it was an expensive project. For an OTT film, this would have set a benchmark in scale and imagination, but budget constraints caught up with it. Even though the platform heads were excited about the story, there was too much at stake financially. So they decided to not move forward with it.”

**Project Details**

Set in 1945, *Ramree* was intended to explore a genre rarely seen in Hindi cinema. The film was planned as a two-hero project and was to be produced by Ajay Devgn. Neha Sharma, who had previously worked on *The Zoya Factor* (2019) and *Tere Bin Laden: Dead or Alive* (2016), was set to make her directorial debut with this ambitious venture.

**Industry Perspective**

Another industry source commented, “‘Ramree’ was an idea in development that did not move forward, a natural part of the creative process where multiple concepts are explored. While some take shape, some don’t.”

Meanwhile, Siddhant Chaturvedi was last seen in *Dhadak 2*, which is now streaming on Netflix.
