Wanda Sykes Loves Hiring Women Over Men: ‘And If She’s a Black Woman, You Got the Job’

Wanda Sykes accepted honors at Variety’s Power of Women L.A. event on Wednesday evening, taking the stage for a candid speech in which she shared her preference for hiring women over men as a producer.

“My joy is when I’m able to hire somebody. And you know who I like to hire? Women. I’ll be upfront with you. When it comes to a position and I look on the paper she might be right here, and he’s up there,” Sykes said, putting out both of her hands, with the “man” one slightly elevated above the “woman” one. “I’m hiring the woman. That’s just how I operate. And I’ll be honest with you, if she’s a black woman oh, pssh. Girl, you got the job.”

Sykes drew applause from the crowd before returning to build to a laugh line: “When women thrive, the community thrives. We make everyone around us better. When you get women, when we win, everybody wins. When men win, sometimes they get a younger wife.”

The comedian and producer went on to elaborate on why she sees a responsibility in her work as a producer to uplift women.

“What I plan on doing is to continue to create projects and even in my stand-up to speak and represent more of what powerful women can do. We’re at a moment in time where, with everything that’s going on in the government, we need to create projects where life imitates art,” Sykes said. “Looking at what’s happening with cutting SNAP benefits that’s going to affect single mothers. I want to do things that speak to them and uplift them. Use your power to uplift women. If we did that, and if that’s the way we moved, we would have two female presidents by now.”

For Variety’s Power of Women L.A., Sykes was introduced by Jane Fonda. During her speech, Sykes also highlighted the Ruth Ellis Center, a Detroit-based nonprofit that offers housing and resources to homeless, runaway, and at-risk queer youth.

“The kids expressed how much that place meant to them and you could see it,” Sykes said about visiting the group’s premises for the first time, as detailed in her Variety cover story. “Immediately I was like, ‘I’m on board. What do y’all need? What can I do?’”

This playful exchange highlights the chemistry between the 76ers’ dynamic backcourt duo.

Edgecombe has delivered on the court from day one, dropping 34 points in his debut against Boston. That performance ranks third all-time for a rookie’s first game, trailing only Wilt Chamberlain and Frank Selvy. Through four games, he’s averaging 22.3 points while leading the league’s rookie leaderboard.

His four-year rookie contract is worth roughly $50.4 million, with a first-year salary of $11.1 million. Add in his Adidas endorsement deal that Maxey mentioned, and it’s clear the walls will likely remain bare by choice, not budget.

For now, Edgecombe’s walls can stay bare. At this rate, he’ll have plenty of accolades to decorate them soon enough.

Students braved cold and rainy weather at The University of Mississippi to attend the “This Is The Turning Point” tour stop hosted by Turning Point USA (TPUSA). The event featured Vice-President J.D. Vance and Erika Kirk, widow of Turning Point founder Charlie Kirk, who now serves as CEO of TPUSA.

The crowd began forming early in the morning outside The Pavilion at Ole Miss and stretched across the campus. Many students wore MAGA hats and “Freedom” shirts as a tribute to the slain founder, Charlie Kirk.

Fox News Digital spoke with attendees about their reasons for coming and their support for J.D. Vance and TPUSA. Ole Miss student Nicholas called the event a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” noting, “We’re honoring Charlie Kirk and his message to the world, and I think that it’s really important as a student to stand for what you believe in. That’s why I’m here, and we’ve been standing in the rain.”

Another student added, “I’m here because I joined the club at the beginning of the school year, and I just want to support the movement.” Others expressed excitement about seeing the speakers. Grant said, “I’m so excited to see J.D. Vance and Erika.” Jack remarked, “We’re all very excited to see J.D. Vance. He could be the next president.”
