Nashik: Elderly Devotee Falls To Death In 300-Foot-Deep Gorakshnath Cave Near Brahmagiri

A 73-year-old devotee from Andhra Pradesh tragically died after falling into the 300-foot-deep Gorakshnath cave area near Brahmagiri late on September 16.

The deceased has been identified as Maitar Ramrao Bhairavi, a resident of Veravanapatti, Ambugam. He had traveled to Brahmagiri to seek darshan at the source of the Godavari River. After visiting the Jata temple, he mistakenly took the difficult route towards Durgbhandar Fort.

In the evening, locals heard him calling for help and immediately alerted Metghar Fort Police Patil, who then informed Trimbak Police Station. Acting swiftly, Police Inspector Mahesh Kulkarni dispatched a team comprising Constables Sachin Jadhav, Amol Borade, and Nandkumar Musale. Additionally, a rescue team was summoned from Nashik.

Officials from the Forest Department, police, rescue personnel, and local residents climbed Brahmagiri via Gangadwar and proceeded towards Durgbhandar. Unfortunately, before reaching him, the devotee slipped and fell into the Gorakshnath cave around midnight.

He was later found approximately six feet from the edge of the cave. Despite efforts by the rescue teams to pull him out, Maitar Ramrao Bhairavi was declared dead at the scene.

The police conducted a panchnama on the spot and brought the body down around dawn.

**Chennai:** In a shocking display of aggression, a Special Sub-Inspector of Police in Tirunelveli, south Tamil Nadu, was caught on video driving his car with a young man clinging to the bonnet for nearly 200 metres after a minor traffic accident spiraled out of control.

The incident took place on Wednesday night when Gandhirajan, a Special Sub-Inspector from Tirunelveli Town Police Station, was driving his car. A sudden stop by a bus ahead caused the biker in front of him to brake sharply. Unfortunately, the car then collided with the bike, throwing it to the roadside. The rider, a young man, sustained minor injuries.

When the man confronted Gandhirajan, the officer appeared agitated. In an alarming move, he accelerated his car in an attempt to intimidate the young man, who refused to move. The force of the car pushed the man onto the bonnet, where he held on desperately, screaming for help as the officer sped off.

For a horrifying distance of nearly 200 metres, the officer continued driving with the man clinging to the front of the vehicle. Onlookers recorded the shocking incident, which quickly went viral and sparked widespread outrage across social media.

In response to the incident, Gandhirajan has been transferred to the Armed Reserve Police Camp. Additionally, a departmental inquiry has been initiated to investigate the matter further.

The remarks came during a hearing of an appeal from Kerala’s petroleum dealers association. The appeal challenged a single judge’s earlier order mandating petrol pumps on national highways to keep their washrooms open to the public at all times.

Justice Amit Rawal, one of the judges on the Division Bench, recounted his recent journey from Jodhpur to Ranthambore. He highlighted the absence of public toilets on that long highway stretch. “Recently, when I was traveling from Jodhpur to Ranthambore, we could not find a single public toilet on the NH. It is such a long stretch. We oversped and got four challans. So challans are there but no public toilet,” he remarked, emphasizing the inconvenience faced by travelers.

### International Comparison

Justice Rawal also compared the situation in India with that in other countries. He noted, “Basically, this is the duty of the NHAI. Frankly speaking, if you go any foreign country, after you cover a certain distance you will always find a convenience stop. [In India] Whatever National Highways toilets are there, they are not working. Nobody is there. Ultimately the entire brunt has fallen on them (petrol pump owners). This is very, very bad.”

### Modification of the Earlier Order

The Division Bench, comprising Justices Amit Rawal and PV Balakrishnan, modified the earlier directive. The revised order states that petrol pumps not located directly on national highways may decide at their discretion whether to allow public use of their toilet facilities. However, these toilets must remain accessible to customers and transit travelers.

For petrol pumps situated along national highways, the court stipulated that washrooms should be available to customers, transit travelers, and staff only during working hours.

In an emotional interview with PEOPLE, Priscilla revealed that Lisa Marie was profoundly changed after Benjamin’s suicide in 2020. “He was absolutely the love of her life,” Priscilla said. “She didn’t want to be here anymore [after his suicide].”

### A Mother’s Concern

In her memoir *Softly, as I Leave You: Life After Elvis*, Priscilla revealed the difficult choice she had to make to take Lisa Marie off life support.

“They had restarted Lisa’s heart, but there was no guarantee it would keep beating,” she wrote. “I asked the doctor, ‘What kind of life will she have if we keep her on that machine?’ He looked at me with compassion and shook his head. ‘No quality of life at all.’”
