South Korea Says Nuclear Submarine Will Scare Kim Jong Un’s North

A South Korean official has stated that the country’s future nuclear-powered submarines—being developed with the assistance of the United States—will pose a significant threat to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Speaking on a program of South Korean broadcaster KBS on Sunday, South Korea’s Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back emphasized that the endurance and stealth capabilities of the proposed nuclear-powered submarines would make North Korean leader Kim Jong Un unable to “sleep well.”

“Theoretically, as long as food supplies are maintained, [a nuclear-powered submarine] does not need to surface,” the minister explained. He added that these vessels could be deployed undetected to various locations around the Korean Peninsula to intimidate Pyongyang.

Following the announcement of the submarine deal, questions arose about the Philadelphia Shipyard, which Trump said would be responsible for building the submarines for South Korea. The shipyard was acquired last year by South Korean conglomerate Hanwha.

Ahn stated that building submarines in South Korea is “the most rational approach” because Philly Shipyard (the new name of Philadelphia Shipyard) currently lacks the necessary facilities. The defense minister also recalled his meeting with U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who noted that “Trump’s will” to support the South Korean submarine project is strong.

“They have pledged active support,” Ahn said.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Ahn mentioned on October 30 that South Korea should acquire a fleet of at least four nuclear-powered submarines using enriched uranium supplied by the U.S. The country’s navy estimates it will take about 10 years to receive the first vessel.

On the Sunday television program, the minister highlighted that South Korea’s military has prepared relentlessly for building nuclear-powered submarines for over 30 years.

“We assess that we have reached a significant level, nearing completion as long as fuel is available,” he added.

Will Kirk has opened up about his family life in the countryside after leaving his flat in Peckham and relocating to a Victorian house in the Surrey Hills.

Appearing on Tuesday’s episode of *Lorraine*, the antique furniture restorer was on hand to promote *The Repair Shop*’s Remembrance Day episode, when he was asked about his personal approach to DIY. After presenter Lorraine Kelly noted that Will and his wife, Polly Snowdon, were in the process of renovating their rural home in Farnham, the father-of-two joked, “So many wellies, you wouldn’t believe,” now that they’ve left London.

Quizzed about his DIY efforts at home, Will told Lorraine: “I can’t sit still really. When I’m not in the barn, then I have to be making or doing something. So, that’s the fireplace in our bedroom,” he pointed out, while a video of his latest restoration played on-screen. “All those bits there I got online second hand, all part of that don’t throw away furniture culture [and] ethos. And they were really cheap, and they’re authentic to the house as well, so I love getting hands-on.”

Will, who moved to Surrey “about a year and a half” ago, frequently shares before-and-after transformations from his spacious property on Instagram. “After moving some of the earth from the top, I realised there was another layer of metal and stone. Editorial: Philly voters joined national rejection of Trump’s GOP

Democrats swept major races in Philadelphia, the suburbs, statewide judicial contests, and in New Jersey in the first general election since President Donald Trump returned to the White House.

In Philadelphia, District Attorney Larry Krasner defeated Republican challenger Pat Dugan by approximately 52 percentage points, easily securing a third term. Krasner captured 75.9% of the vote compared to Dugan’s 24%. For City Controller, Democratic incumbent Christy Brady defeated Republican challenger Ari Patrinos by more than 72 percentage points, winning 86.14% of the vote compared to Patrinos’ 13.79%.

Despite a well-funded campaign by conservative activists aligned with Trump to unseat three Democratic justices on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, all three justices up for retention were chosen to remain by voters.

In other judicial contests, Democrat Brandon Neuman won the Pennsylvania Superior Court race against Republican Maria Battista and Liberal Party candidate Daniel Wassmer. Alice DeBow retained her seat as well. For the Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court, Democrat Stella Tsai defeated Republican Matt Wolford, while Judge Michael Wojcik retained his seat.

Democrats also dominated in the suburbs. In Delaware County, Democrats maintained unanimous control of Delaware County Council. In Bucks County, Democrats swept all row offices, with Joe Khan elected as district attorney and Democrat Danny Ceisler ousting Republican Fred Harran in the sheriff’s race.

In New Jersey, Democrat Mikie Sherrill beat Republican Jack Ciattarelli in the governor’s race, a contest that drew national attention as a possible prelude to next year’s midterms.

Voter turnout was notably high in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. In Philadelphia, 34% of registered voters cast ballots — the highest turnout for an off-year election in at least a decade, according to unofficial results posted by the City Commissioners office.

Polling and exit surveys indicated that President Trump was a major motivating factor behind Democratic victories across the region, statewide, and nationally, including the gubernatorial race in Virginia and the mayoral race in New York.

In New York, Democrat Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old Democratic Socialist, defeated former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent and was endorsed by Trump.

On Election Day, voters told the Tribune that dissatisfaction with the current state of government was a primary concern. As the Tribune reported, “While President Donald Trump was not on the ballot Tuesday, his policies and their effects were heavily on the minds of voters.”

Last Tuesday, Philadelphians joined voters nationwide in expressing opposition to Trump’s economic policies and the government shutdown, which polls indicate voters mainly blame on Trump and Republicans in Congress.
