Alaska Airlines Pilot Who Attempted Engine Shutdown While High on Shrooms Granted No Extra Jail Time [WATCH]

A former off-duty Alaska Airlines pilot who attempted to shut down the engines of a San Francisco-bound flight while under the influence of psychedelic mushrooms will not serve additional prison time, a federal judge ruled Monday, as reported by The New York Post. Joseph Emerson was sentenced to time served and three years of supervised release by U. S. District Court Judge Amy Baggio in Portland, Oregon. Federal prosecutors had sought an additional year in prison. “Pilots are not perfect. They are human,” Baggio said during the hearing. “They are people, and all people need help sometimes.” The incident occurred on Oct. 22, 2023, aboard a Horizon Air flight from Everett, Washington, to San Francisco. Emerson, who was riding off-duty in the cockpit, attempted to pull two red handles that could have activated the fire suppression system and cut the fuel supply to the engines. The plane was carrying more than 80 passengers. His attorney, Ethan Levi, described the episode as “a product of untreated alcohol use disorder.” Levi said Emerson had been drinking at the time and accepted mushrooms “because of his lower inhibitions.” After spending 46 days in jail, Emerson was released in December 2023 under conditions requiring sobriety, mental health treatment, and avoiding aircraft. Levi said Emerson has been sober since entering treatment. Before sentencing, Emerson told the court he took responsibility for his actions. “I’m not a victim. I am here as a direct result of my actions,” he said. “I can tell you that this very tragic event has forced me to grow as an individual.” His wife, Sarah Stretch, also addressed the court. “I am so sorry for those that it’s impacted as much as it has,” she said, adding that she was proud of her husband’s progress. One of the pilots on the flight, Alan Koziol, said he did not believe Emerson intended to harm anyone, describing him as appearing “more like a trapped animal than a man in control of his faculties. Assistant U. S. Attorney Geoffrey Barrow said Emerson’s actions were serious and credited the flight crew for preventing a disaster. “There were 84 people on that plane who could have lost their lives,” Barrow said. A passenger, Alison Snyder, told the court by phone that she and her husband will “never feel as safe flying as we once did.” Emerson pleaded guilty in September as part of an agreement with prosecutors. He faced federal charges of interfering with a flight crew. A separate Oregon state indictment charged him with 83 counts of endangering another person and one count of endangering an aircraft. At the state level, Emerson was sentenced to 50 days in jail with credit for time served and five years of probation. The court ordered him to complete 664 hours of community service, half of which may be completed at his nonprofit pilot health organization, “Clear Skies Ahead.” He must also pay $60,000 in restitution, mostly to Alaska Air Group, and comply with requirements related to sobriety, mental health treatment, and staying away from aircraft.

While Kardashian no longer finds peace in journaling, she still believes it can be an “incredibly therapeutic process” for others. “I wish I had those books just to see like, what were my thoughts then,” she said. “That’s the special part of journaling you look back, I don’t know, five years, 10 years, two years, and you’re like, ‘Wow, I was such an idiot. What was I writing about?’ Or, ‘I can’t believe that mattered to me the way it did then.’” “That’s what’s so special about journaling, is seeing your emotional state and how far you came or if you need something to reflect on or maybe inspire,” she continued. “It’s such a beautiful process to do, and so I do hate that I don’t do it anymore.” Kardashian said that there is a part of her that doesn’t want to “risk” that heartbreak happening again. “I’m not going to start a journal again and have someone destroy it, or I lose it. It’s more, I’m going to say traumatic for me, but I just don’t even want to open that up again,” she said. Instead, Kardashian uses the scarring memory as a lesson that nothing is permanent in life. “I think it just made me [realize] . you don’t get to really keep anything in this world, and it’s, maybe that’s OK,” she said. “I used to hold onto all these things, and sometimes I will write something, but then just throw it away. If you have a CD that’s about to expire in the coming weeks, it’s imperative to understand your options and be proactive. If you ignore your CD’s maturity date, it might auto-renew at a lower rate, or you could miss out on better options entirely. What should you do instead? If your CD is maturing this December, some experts recommend taking strategic steps now. Below, we’ll detail three that they suggest. Start by seeing how high your current CD rate offers are here. 3 moves to make if your CD account is set to mature this December With your CD account maturity date looming on the calendar now, experts recommend taking these three next steps now: Know your grace period and options When your CD reaches its maturity date, you have a short grace period, typically seven to 10 days, to move your funds, open a new CD or cash out your funds without a penalty. If you do nothing during this period, the bank will follow its default setting, which is usually an automatic renewal into a new CD at the bank’s current rate. Keep in mind, the grace period is the limited time in which you can withdraw or transfer your funds without penalty fees. As Geri Hopkins, chief operations officer at Skyla Federal Credit Union, points out, “It’s important to understand this period to avoid missing a deadline and unintentionally locking funds into a different term with a potentially lower rate. That determines whether you should roll, ladder or redeem.” Start by thinking about when you’ll need the money and then choose a term that matches your goals. “If you’ll need cash in the next year, stay short. If this is excess long-term cash, construct a CD ladder to mature every six to 12 months so a portion of your assets is always coming due within a new rate environment every year or so,” says Urquhart. If you need access to your money, a high-yield savings account is a good option because you can withdraw your funds at any time without a penalty. If you have a short-term goal and want a safe place to keep your money, a Treasury bill also makes sense because it pays a guaranteed amount at maturity. Glossy Black Snake Named in Honor of the Late Steve Irwin

Crikey, a new species of wolf snake has been discovered in India and named after the late Steve Irwin. Researchers decided to call the glossy black snake “Irwin’s wolf snake,” or “Lycodon irwini,” in honor of the Australian zookeeper, conservationist and television personality known as “the Crocodile Hunter.” “His passion and dedication to wildlife education and conservation have inspired naturalists and conservationists worldwide, including the authors of this paper,” they wrote. The species-which was found in a moist evergreen forest on Great Nicobar Island should be considered “endangered,” according to the team, who have called for conservation efforts to protect the area. “The species was previously mis-identified by researchers in the past. We present evidence that the snake is an entirely new species!” study author Zeeshan A. Mirza of the Max Planck Institute for Biology “The new species is only known from a single island in the Nicobar group of islands and is not common. That qualifies it for a rank of an endangered species.” “The adults of the species grow to about a meter and are glossy black, lacking any pattern or markings. They are strictly nocturnal and likely feed on small lizards, frogs and small mammals. The snakes are non-venomous but will bite when handled,” said Mirza. “The snake belongs to a group of snakes called wolf snakes, so called for their enlarged front teeth like the ones of a wolf.” The team said that they did not just grow up watching Irwin, but were inspired by him to follow their career paths. “All the authors are Indian, and if one considers a profession in India, it is usually inclined towards being a doctor, engineer or government employee. It was often difficult to convince parents if their children chose a career outside these lucrative fields, but Steve Irwin significantly helped change that mindset by demonstrating that one can pursue a career working with snakes!” Mirza explained. Entire Texas congressional delegation votes to release Epstein files

The U. S. House of Representatives voted nearly unanimously Tuesday to require the Justice Department to publish all of its files related to Jeffrey Epstein, including one Texas Republican who opposed the measure until a few days ago. For months, President Donald Trump resisted calls to release the files as he tried to distance himself from the deceased sex offender, including pressing Republicans against signing a discharge petition a tool through which a majority can circumvent House leadership and force a vote on a bill to compel the Justice Department to release material on Epstein. Last week, the petition garnered the support of all House Democrats and four House Republicans none from Texas to successfully require a vote. The vote comes after the House Oversight Committee released documents last week that draw ties between Trump and Epstein, including emails from Epstein that mention Trump. As it became clear that many Republicans would vote with Democrats to release the files, the president changed his mind. Trump posted on Truth Social Sunday evening that House Republicans should vote to release the Epstein files because they have “nothing to hide.” Trump also said Monday that he would sign the bill to release the files if it reached his desk. Later on Tuesday, the Senate agreed to pass the bill unanimously, sending it straight to Trump’s desk. On his podcast Monday, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said he supports the release of the files and added he suspected more Democrats would be harmed than Republicans. “The bulk of the evidence, from everything we know, is going to be evidence that is a real, real problem for, I suspect, a significant number of Democrats,” Cruz said. “I’m glad the President did this. I’m hopeful the House can vote. We can put this behind it, and then we can have some real accountability to people who committed criminal acts and hurt underage girls.” Though no Texas Republican joined the effort to compel a vote through the discharge petition, all of them voted in favor of releasing the files on Tuesday. Rep. Clay Higgins, R-Louisiana, was the only member who voted against the release. As recently as Friday, Rep. Troy Nehls, R-Richmond, spoke out against the measure. “I’ll be voting NO on the Epstein Hoax,” Nehls wrote on social media. “The Democrats are using the Epstein Hoax to distract us from the winning of President Trump and his administration.” But by Monday, Nehls was parroting Trump and telling reporters he would vote to release the files. The documents will exonerate Trump and prove that the president is not a pedophile, Nehls said. Nehls has previously said Republicans should be doing everything possible to help Trump achieve his goals. “If Donald Trump says ‘Jump three feet high and scratch your heads,’ we all jump three feet high and scratch our heads,” Nehls told reporters last November. Others, like Rep. Keith Self, R-McKinney, had consistently supported the bill, but refused to sign the discharge petition, saying a House panel probing the matter, with the blessing of leadership, was making good progress. Rep. Chip Roy, R-Austin, spoke on the House floor ahead of the vote, emphasizing the importance of transparency. “Today, a united Republican Party and a bipartisan super majority is going to pass a bill to increase transparency regarding the egregious abuses by Jeffrey Epstein,” he said. Rep. Julie Johnson, D-Farmers Branch, said the vote is symbolic because it shows that Congress is standing up for justice. For too long, Republicans have failed to hold people in positions of power accountable, she said. “It is political gamesmanship at its worst,” she said. “They’ve traded that accountability for complicitness to a president out of fear that they’re going to harm their great leader.”.
