**Mumbai: BMC Begins Restoration of Public Properties Damaged During Maratha Reservation Protest**

A month after thousands of Marathas across Maharashtra gathered in and around Azad Maidan in South Mumbai demanding reservation, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started the process of reinstating public properties damaged during the protests.

Significant locations affected during the demonstrations include beautified traffic islands, plants on major road dividers, carpet lawns, and other smaller green belts. These restoration works fall under the jurisdiction of the civic garden department and are expected to cost the public at least Rs 10 lakhs.

The BMC’s garden department has invited quotations from at least four contractors for reinstatement work at key sites such as dividers on Mahapalika Marg (near BMC headquarters close to Azad Maidan), DN Road, NS Road bus stop, Amar Jawan Traffic Island, and LT Road traffic island. The restoration efforts include planting new trees, creating fresh carpet lawns, and replacing damaged tiling.

An officer from the BMC garden department stated, “Many small plants in traffic dividers and traffic islands were damaged during the Maratha protest. Tiles and green carpets at these traffic islands have also suffered damage and need to be replaced. Since the rains are still ongoing, plants can be transplanted immediately.”

Each restoration project is estimated to cost around Rs 3 lakhs, bringing the total expenditure by the garden department for damage caused during the Maratha Morcha to at least Rs 10 lakhs.

The protest demanding Maratha reservation began on August 29 at Azad Maidan and continued until September 3, effectively bringing South Mumbai to a standstill with thousands of agitators joining from across the state. Following the protest, about 153 metric tonnes of garbage were collected, and the affected roads were thoroughly cleaned with water sprays and machines.

Bruce Willis and his wife Emma Heming Willis faced a heartbreaking challenge when the actor was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) in 2022. The 70-year-old star’s diagnosis left the couple feeling overwhelmed and unsupported.

Determined to understand more, Emma began researching the condition online. “After that appointment, I started digging into research to really understand: What was this diagnosis? How does it impact my husband? How does it impact our family?” she explained.

Emma described the challenges of coping with FTD, especially in its early stages. “With FTD, those early years are so hard because you’re trying to figure it all out in real time and learning things on the fly. It’s a progressive disease. So in the beginning, your person can still manage some things, and then slowly the needs start changing and the things that they used to be able to do, they can’t do anymore. You have to rev up the support.”

Emma, 47, a model and mother to daughters Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11, is now channeling her experience into helping others. She is working to develop a “really simple” resource for families coping with dementia diagnoses.

“It brings me joy to know people in my position will feel more supported as a result,” she said.

To create this resource, Emma collaborated with Dr. Bruce Miller, a neurologist and director of the UCSF Dementia Center. “I talked to Dr. Bruce Miller about what had happened at our diagnosis appointment and how I would love for a doctor’s office to have a piece of paper with a couple of resources on it—something really simple,” she shared.

Dr. Miller was eager to assist. “He said he’d love to do this with me. So we’re putting together these resources, and then I’m going to take this template to other institutions.”

Emma hopes this initiative will make a difference for other caregivers. “That brings me joy to know that other caregivers will walk out of that office, and even though it’s still going to be a traumatic visit, they’re going to know there is support.”

Republican Senator Ted Cruz attempted to troll Democrats who refused to vote for the Republicans’ temporary spending bill by copying President Donald Trump’s racist video that superimposed a mustache and sombrero onto House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

Taking to his X profile on Wednesday, Cruz indicated he would punish the 44 Senate Democrats who voted against the continuing resolution—which triggered a government shutdown—by placing sombreros and handlebar mustaches onto their photos. The two-minute-long video flashes altered photos of the Senators set to the 1993 pop song “Macarena.”

The idea appeared to be inspired by Trump’s recent AI-generated post mocking Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer after their meeting in the Oval Office ahead of the shutdown to try and negotiate a deal. Trump’s video featured Jeffries, who is Black, as a stereotyped Mexican with a sombrero and mustache, alongside Schumer and a deepfake of Schumer’s voice. Jeffries called the video racist.

However, Vice President JD Vance excused the video as funny and claimed Trump was poking a little bit of fun at Democrats. Vance said he’d make a solemn promise that the sombrero memes will stop if the Democrats help Republicans reopen the government.

In keeping with the spirit of Vance’s promise, Cruz vowed to continue “Sombrero posting” as long as the shutdown remains. “The 44 Senate Democrats who voted for Schumer’s Shutdown should know that the Sombrero posting will continue until they re-open our government,” Cruz wrote in his Wednesday post.

The Senate Democrats, joined by Republican Rand Paul and independent Bernie Sanders, voted against the continuing resolution on Tuesday evening out of protest because Republicans have refused to add Democrats-approved healthcare provisions to the temporary funding bill.

Democrats have blamed Republicans for the shutdown, saying they’re refusing to negotiate, thus backing them into a corner as they fight for those on Medicaid and low-income Americans using marketplace insurance.

Republicans have blamed Democrats for trying to add the healthcare provisions into an otherwise clean continuing resolution, meaning the bill does not seek to make dramatic changes to the current funding levels. Many Republicans have also falsely claimed Democrats want to give free health care to illegal aliens.
