HYBE’s Weverse superfan platform is growing – and going big in China

HYBE’s superfan platform Weverse is making significant inroads into China through strategic partnerships with two of the market’s digital giants: Tencent Music Entertainment and Alibaba. These moves mark a pivotal moment in HYBE’s international expansion strategy, as the company confirmed that Weverse reached a record high of 11.6 million monthly active users (MAUs) globally in Q3 2025. This represented 20% year-over-year growth for Weverse, which received an undisclosed investment from Universal Music Group last year.

Last Thursday (November 6), Weverse announced its new collaboration with QQ Music, China’s largest music streaming platform owned by Tencent Music Entertainment. This partnership enables Chinese users to seamlessly access Weverse content and engage with their favorite artists. The tie-up eliminates barriers that previously complicated access for Chinese fans, creating a more integrated and user-friendly experience.

The second part of Weverse’s China expansion is the launch of a flagship Weverse Shop on Tmall, the e-commerce platform operated by digital giant Alibaba, earlier this year. The Tmall Weverse store, launched in June, sells official merchandise and light sticks for 17 Weverse artists. This provides Chinese consumers with authenticated products through one of the country’s most trusted retail channels.

The Tmall venture has already proven successful. In just five months of operation, the Weverse Shop earned Tmall’s “2025 Supernova Brand” award, a recognition given to overseas brands demonstrating strong sales performance, rapid growth, high search volume, and positive customer reviews.

HYBE CEO Jason Jae-sang Lee explained the company’s measured approach to the Chinese market during an earnings call with investors on November 10. The company’s strategy in China minimizes direct investment and operational challenges by leveraging the established infrastructure and user bases of Tencent and Alibaba.

“Rather than putting in our resources directly, we have been utilizing corporate partnerships. And so we have not been trying to maximize profits coming from China, but we understand that there are so many Chinese fans who love and support our artists,” Lee said.

He added, “We decided to partner with QQ Music, the strongest streaming platform in China, as well as Tmall, so that more Chinese fans can engage with our artists more actively. So it was more of a company-to-company partnership. And such partnerships are already receiving very positive responses.”

Lee also revealed that “in addition to the currently available Weverse DM,” HYBE is “discussing additional services to be available on these platforms.” He emphasized, “So in China, we’re not aggressive yet, but we are continuing to look for and implement solutions that can best serve our fans in China.”

Weverse’s expansion into China comes as the platform continues to experience strong growth globally. HYBE CEO Lee attributed the recent uplift in MAUs primarily to BTS members actively returning to the platform following their military service obligations, combined with diverse global activities by artists on Weverse.

China represents a crucial market for HYBE’s expansion ambitions, and the statistics reveal why. China’s two biggest music streaming providers, Tencent Music Entertainment (TME) and NetEase Cloud Music (NCM), accounted for around 171 million paying users combined at the end of 2024. Over 25 million paying music subscribers were added in China in 2024 alone, according to senior industry sources—compared to just 3.2 million added in the USA.

China is also rapidly gaining global market share in music streaming subscription revenues. According to IFPI data, China’s annual streaming subscription revenues surpassed USD $1 billion in 2024, up 18.9% year-over-year. In doing so, China surpassed Germany to become the world’s third-largest music streaming subscription market. MBW has previously predicted that China may leapfrog the world’s second-largest subscription market, the UK, by 2026.

Earlier this year, HYBE officially launched HYBE China, a subsidiary based in Beijing to support artist activities in the country, further underscoring the company’s commitment to strengthening its presence in this vital market.

Trump Is Bullying Air Traffic Controllers to Get Back to Work While They’re Still Going Unpaid

Air traffic controllers aren’t being paid right now, forcing many to call out sick as they scramble to scrape together enough money from second jobs to feed their families. But President Donald Trump is not happy about it, given all the delays that are happening at the nation’s airports. The president seems convinced he can just bully his way into getting air traffic controllers to keep working for no pay.

“All Air Traffic Controllers must get back to work, NOW!!! Anyone who doesn’t will be substantially ‘docked,’” Trump wrote on Truth Social Monday morning.

Trump went on to claim that air traffic controllers who were “GREAT PATRIOTS” and “didn’t take ANY TIME OFF” will potentially be getting a bonus of $10,000. To be more precise, Trump said he would be “recommending” a bonus, which doesn’t guarantee that anyone will actually receive it.

He referred to the government shutdown, which is currently on its 41st day, as the “Democrat Shutdown Hoax.”

The U.S. Senate made some movement on Sunday toward ending the shutdown, with eight Democrats voting in an early procedural step to push forward a final vote. However, ending the shutdown still faces several hurdles, including passage in the House. Democrats received no real concessions despite originally claiming they wanted Republicans to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits.

Trump stressed his disappointment in the air traffic controllers who had not been showing up for work. They were supposed to be paid last Tuesday but instead received notices that they would be paid $0, forcing many to work jobs like driving for Uber and DoorDash.

“For those that did nothing but complain, and took time off, even though everyone knew they would be paid, IN FULL, shortly into the future, I am NOT HAPPY WITH YOU. You didn’t step up to help the U.S.A. against the FAKE DEMOCRAT ATTACK that was only meant to hurt our Country. You will have a negative mark, at least in my mind, against your record,” Trump continued.

He also said that if air traffic controllers wanted to “leave service in the near future,” they shouldn’t hesitate to do so, but they would be getting no payment or severance.

Trump’s use of the phrase “near future” is noteworthy because he seems aware that telling people to quit immediately is the opposite of what he wants. Essentially, the president is telling those he views as disloyal to come back temporarily and then quit when it’s convenient for him.

This is troubling given the current shortage of somewhere between 2,000 and 3,000 air traffic controllers, according to Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. Losing more personnel would be devastating to the goal of getting more trained and hired, even if the government shutdown ends soon.

More than 2,600 flights were canceled Sunday, and at least 1,400 flights were canceled already on Monday — roughly 5.5% of all flights nationwide, according to USA Today. That’s more than the 4% threshold ordered by the FAA as the agency phases in more cancellations, which are expected to reach 10% this week. Not all the cancellations are due to FAA-mandated slowdowns; some winter weather in the Chicago area also disrupted flights.

Duffy appeared on CNN on Sunday to emphasize the real dangers caused by being short-staffed, including incidents described as “loss of separation in the airspace,” meaning that planes are flying too close together.

The president also claimed on Monday that his administration was acquiring new equipment for air traffic controllers, describing it as “in process.”

“You will be quickly replaced by true Patriots, who will do a better job on the Brand New State of the Art Equipment, the best in the World, that we are in the process of ordering. The last ‘Administration’ wasted Billions of Dollars trying to fix antiquated ‘junk.’ They had no idea what they were doing!” Trump wrote.

He concluded with a message to those still working and those not reporting:

“Again, to our great American Patriots, GOD BLESS YOU I won’t be able to send your money fast enough! To all others, REPORT TO WORK IMMEDIATELY. GOD BLESS AMERICA! PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP.”

It remains to be seen how Trump’s coercive approach will be received by air traffic controllers, who are already exhausted from trying to support their families, taking on second jobs, and doing their best during incredibly difficult times.

“I’m broken down. I’m sore. I’m mentally drained,” one controller based in the southeast U.S. told the New York Times. The controller said they had been using all their free time hanging Christmas lights to earn extra money.

“There’s some times where I felt like just going into the corner and crying because it’s been pretty tough to push through the physical pain, the tiredness and waking up the next day having to do it all over again,” the controller said.

Bengals’ Joe Burrow has practice window opened amid turf toe recovery

The Cincinnati Bengals have been relying on quarterback Joe Flacco following Joe Burrow’s turf toe injury, which sidelined Burrow for a significant period. However, there is now promising news regarding the star quarterback’s status.

Amid ongoing rumors about a potential Burrow return, recent updates from Ian Rapoport of NFL Network suggest that Burrow is indeed getting closer to taking the field again. According to Rapoport, Burrow’s “window opened” for a return to practice.

Burrow is set to resume practice activities, though he will be limited initially and remains on injured reserve. Rapoport shared the update on X (formerly Twitter), stating: “A major development for the Bengals: QB Joe Burrow is returning to practice. A little under two months after toe surgery, Burrow has his practice window opened, and he’ll be limited. Still on Injured Reserve, he has 21 days to be activated. A December return is real.”

This marks an encouraging step forward for the Bengals as they look to have their star quarterback back in action soon. Fans can now look forward to a possible Burrow return in December as he progresses through his recovery.

Cleveland ‘s Luis Ortiz to appear in court over allegations he took bribes to rig pitches

BOSTON (AP) — Cleveland Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz is due in court Monday on charges accusing him and teammate Emmanuel Clase of taking bribes to help bettors in their native Dominican Republic win prop bets placed on pitches they threw.

According to the indictment against the two, unsealed Sunday, the highly paid pitchers took several thousand dollars in payoffs to help two unnamed gamblers in their home country win at least $460,000 on bets placed on the speed and outcome of certain pitches, including some that landed in the dirt.

Clase, who was the Guardians’ closer, and Ortiz, a starter, have been on nondisciplinary paid leave since July, when MLB began investigating what it described as unusually high in-game betting activity when the two pitched. Some of the games in question took place in April, May, and June.

Ortiz, 26, was arrested Sunday by the FBI at Boston Logan International Airport. He is expected to appear in federal court in Boston on Monday. Clase, 27, is not in custody, officials said.

Ortiz and Clase “betrayed America’s pastime,” U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella Jr. said. “Integrity, honesty and fair play are part of the DNA of professional sports. When corruption infiltrates the sport, it brings disgrace not only to the participants but damages the public trust in an institution that is vital and dear to all of us.”

Ortiz’s lawyer, Chris Georgalis, said in a statement that his client is innocent and “has never, and would never, improperly influence a game not for anyone and not for anything.” Georgalis added that Ortiz’s defense team previously documented for prosecutors that the payments and money transfers between him and individuals in the Dominican Republic were for legal activities.

Major League Baseball said it contacted federal law enforcement when it began investigating unusual betting activity and has fully cooperated with authorities. “We are aware of the indictment and today’s arrest, and our investigation is ongoing,” a league statement said.

In a statement, the Guardians said: “We are aware of the recent law enforcement action. We will continue to fully cooperate with both law enforcement and Major League Baseball as their investigations continue.”

Clase and Ortiz are each charged with wire fraud conspiracy, honest services wire fraud conspiracy, money laundering conspiracy, and conspiracy to influence sporting contests by bribery. The top charges carry a potential punishment of up to 20 years in prison.

In one example cited in the indictment, Clase allegedly invited a bettor to a game against the Boston Red Sox in April and spoke with him by phone just before taking the mound. Four minutes later, the indictment said, the bettor and his associates won $11,000 on a wager that Clase would throw a certain pitch slower than 97.95 mph (157.63 kph).

Clase, a three-time All-Star and two-time American League Reliever of the Year, had a $4.5 million salary in 2025—the fourth season of a $20 million, five-year contract. The three-time AL save leader began providing the bettors with information about his pitches in 2023 but did not ask for payoffs until this year, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said Ortiz, who earned a $782,600 salary this year, joined the scheme in June and is accused of rigging pitches in games against the Seattle Mariners and the St. Louis Cardinals.

These charges are the latest bombshell developments in a federal crackdown on gambling in professional sports. Last month, more than 30 people, including prominent basketball figures such as Portland Trail Blazers head coach and Basketball Hall of Famer Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, were arrested in a gambling sweep that rocked the NBA.

New: USAID’s Secret Signal Chats Document Plot Against U.S. Leadership

Red State

One of the better posters and commenters on X is the aptly-named @DataRepublican, who is known for digging into data, crunching numbers, and exposing uncomfortable truths that challenge the left’s narratives. DataRepublican has truly outdone herself with a recent thread that is worth examining closely. Here are a few highlights.

### The Opening Post

DataRepublican writes in full:

> Ex-USAID employees describe how, before January 20, they moved internal groups off government systems and into encrypted Signal chats, then quickly linked with foreign partners and NGOs after the inauguration.

> This attempt at creating a color revolution isn’t new—this was already reported earlier this year by NOTUS. But what hasn’t been reported is the *international* aspect.

> One participant explicitly frames it as “a global anti-authoritarian movement,” connecting U.S. officials with “colleagues from around the world who have dealt with this directly.” They reference coordination with Johns Hopkins University, “international democracy and conflict mitigation spaces,” and efforts to mobilize across borders against what they perceive as domestic authoritarianism.

> At what point does this become treason?

As always, I am patiently pulling together this thread for you. I urge you to read the entire thread and listen to the video clips. There’s some very disconcerting content here—clips where the speakers appear to be engaging in efforts to conceal their international contacts and conversations from the legally constituted authority, namely President Trump.

### A Revealing Conversation

Consider this excerpt from the conversation shared:

> “We don’t have to be intermediaries, either. We can bring in actors, or colleagues from around the world, that dealt with this directly, very specific issues… Whether that’s on tackling corruption or how to respond to corruption, mobilizing around corruption, we can bring those folks in, and kind of be those facilitators. And so, again, I think those coordinations and structures are just starting to take place.”

Now, I’m not one to jump to wild conspiracy theories, but having a group of disgruntled former USAID employees talking on Signal about “tackling corruption” is more than disconcerting—it is downright unsettling. This sounds very much like Trump Derangement Syndrome mobilizing for battle.

### The Most Alarming Statement

Here is a passage that should raise some serious alarms:

> “The foment of our current constitutional crisis is our opportunity to catalyze and synergize a dynamic change-making. A dynamic change, making fractal ecosystems capable of co-generating the emergence of the new (driving them together? Unclear) based social-political-economic governance systems.”

It’s a long, jargon-heavy sentence, probably designed that way to obscure the meaning. But when you strip away the bureaucratic language, it sounds like a group planning major changes to “social-political-economic governance.”

Also, what constitutional crisis? To my knowledge, there is no constitutional crisis. President Trump was elected and inaugurated in accordance with the Constitution. His administration’s cabinet officials and appointees were nominated and confirmed as required. When judges, regardless of their bias, have ruled against actions taken by the Trump administration, they have complied pending further judicial review.

There. Is. No. Constitutional. Crisis.

But that could change if these behind-the-scenes maneuvers continue.

### Final Thoughts

I urge you to read the full thread, watch the videos, and understand precisely what is happening here. This is not something to dismiss lightly.

**MtnClimber:**
If you understand “Color Revolution” tactics, it’s easy to see that this one has been underway since Trump stepped down that escalator in 2016, continuing through the current lawfare and judicial stays against the Executive Branch.

Georgie And Mandy Season 2: The Tiny Joseph Detail You Likely Missed

**Spoilers Ahead: “Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage” Season 2, Episode 3 – “A Will and a Dead Man’s Wife”**

It’s been just over a year since George Cooper Sr. passed away, and Mary Cooper (Zoe Perry) is finally ready to re-enter the dating scene in *“Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage”* Season 2. The first man she meets as a single woman is Joseph (Jeremy Brandt), who is introduced to her by Connie “Meemaw” Tucker (Annie Potts).

There’s something fascinating about how Joseph dresses and behaves—he reminds viewers of Mary’s former crush, Pastor Rob (Dan Byrd). While this similarity may fly under the radar for some, a closer look reveals that Joseph and Pastor Rob share the same unctuous demeanor and a similar nerdy cool. Even their mustaches bear a striking resemblance. Joseph tends to be quieter and kinder than Pastor Rob, but with his flannel shirts and playful attitude, the two men are quite alike.

Given everything Mary has been through, it’s no surprise she’s drawn to a similar type of man as she tries to make a fresh start. Unlike Pastor Rob, Joseph is upfront about his intentions toward Mary. In *“A Will and a Dead Man’s Wife,”* the Cooper children have to come to terms with their mother’s new romance, each processing it in their own unique way.

Georgie (Montana Jordan) and Missy (Raegan Revord) agree that Mary has the right to live her personal life as she pleases. Mary embraces this freedom, even discussing what the future might hold with Joseph. But will this new relationship end differently than her past feelings for Pastor Rob?

Mary’s crush on Pastor Rob could never fully develop back when she was still married, as depicted in *“Young Sheldon.”* Nonetheless, they became very close during his stint as the youth pastor at Mary’s church. Pastor Rob even tried to coax her away to work with him at his parish in Arkansas, which sparked a confrontation between Mary and George (Lance Barber), who mistakenly believed she was having an affair.

Thanks to the tension he caused, Pastor Rob quickly became unpopular among fans of *“Young Sheldon.”* After Mary declines to move with him, he quietly exits the story.

Joseph, on the other hand, starts with a clean slate. Things look hopeful, and it’s clear he genuinely cares for Mary. Importantly, he doesn’t have Pastor Rob’s slippery, uncertain nature. That said, there’s still plenty of opportunity for Joseph to cause Mary pain, whether unintentionally or by design.

We already know they won’t end up together—the fact that Sheldon’s mother is single in *“The Big Bang Theory”* means something will likely go wrong in Mary and Joseph’s relationship. Hopefully, viewers will appreciate Joseph’s role in *“Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage”* even if his storyline is relatively short-lived.

Stay tuned to see how Mary’s journey of love and healing unfolds in this compelling season!

Warner Bros. Canceled DC Movie About Iconic Batman Character

A Catwoman movie was quietly canceled by Warner Bros. Discovery, disappointing fans eager to see a fresh take on the iconic character.

Created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, Catwoman first debuted in DC Comics in the 1940’s issue Batman #1. Since then, she has been a central figure in many Batman and DC storylines, portrayed in live-action by stars such as Michelle Pfeiffer, Halle Berry, Anne Hathaway, Zoë Kravitz, and more.

### What Do We Know About Warner Bros.’ Canceled Catwoman Movie?

According to DC Film News, Swaybox Studios—the production company currently working on the animated *Dynamic Duo* movie for DC Studios—was developing a Catwoman film that was canceled back in 2022. This project would have focused on a younger Selina Kyle, exploring her childhood.

In a now-deleted 2025 interview with Biz New Orleans, Swaybox’s Arthur Mintz revealed, “We were greenlit to make a project for HBO Max, a feature film based on Catwoman as a kid.” However, just three months into development, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav decided to slow down content production for streaming platforms, leading to the cancellation of the Catwoman project. Mintz added, “He canceled 42 projects, including ours.”

### Is There Any Hope for the Catwoman Project?

There is a silver lining. Matt Reeves, director of *The Batman*, reportedly saw some footage from the Catwoman movie. After putting together a sizzle reel and presenting it to Zaslav, the executive liked what he saw but mentioned that the project needed a “larger story.”

Whether this means the Catwoman film could be revived remains uncertain.

### What’s Next for Catwoman and DC Animated Movies?

The upcoming *Dynamic Duo* animated movie is set to focus on younger versions of Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. This raises the possibility that Selina Kyle could appear in the film. It’s also conceivable that elements from the canceled Catwoman project might be retooled and integrated into *Dynamic Duo*.

For now, however, audiences should not hold their breath for Swaybox’s Catwoman prequel movie to hit the screen anytime soon. Fans will have to wait and see if the character’s story finds a new home in future DC projects.

UN Diplomats Weigh Banning Surrogacy at Advice of Special Rapporteur

Recently, a United Nations human rights official appeared before a UN committee to present her research on the topic of surrogacy. For social conservatives skeptical of anything done by UN officials, it was a refreshing change of pace.

The report, written by Reem Alsalem, Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women and Girls, examined surrogacy through the lens of violence against women and girls. It concluded that the practice of surrogacy—whether in its “altruistic” form or commercial—commodifies and exploits women and children. And despite surrogacy’s rapid global expansion, the report noted, it is incompatible with human rights.

After detailing many of the ways surrogacy harms women and children, the new report ultimately recommends that all countries ban surrogacy completely, calling upon UN member states to adopt a legally binding treaty that would prohibit surrogacy globally while supporting its victims.

The special rapporteur’s report, first released in July, has already influenced policy discussions in several countries. In September, the Slovak Republic adopted a constitutional amendment prohibiting surrogacy. Meanwhile, governments in Australia, Ecuador, and San Marino are currently reviewing the legal status of surrogacy in their countries.

Other developed countries have a wide range of positions on surrogacy. Last year, Italy banned its citizens from going abroad to have a baby through surrogacy. Along with Spain, France, and Germany, it also outlaws all forms of surrogacy domestically. The UK limits the amount of money that commissioning parents can pay a surrogate, while in Greece the surrogate mother has no legal rights at all over the child.

### The Wild West

While most developed nations have outlawed or strictly regulated commercial surrogacy, the United States is in the minority in its explicit support of the practice. Surrogacy is a particularly underregulated industry.

Unsurprisingly, California and New York are the leaders in the American surrogacy market. Nearly all states permit surrogacy and enforce surrogacy contracts, while Louisiana, Michigan, and Nebraska are the only states in which it is illegal.

Sadly, in stark contrast to the screening processes for adoptive or foster parents, there are almost no limits to who can enter into a surrogacy contract. This allows all kinds of bad actors to commission a child. For this reason, the United States is a leading destination for foreigners seeking to commission a baby.

As Heritage experts Emma Waters and Simon Hankinson put it in a report last year, “The international ‘rent-a-womb’ industry is disproportionately fueled by Chinese nationals (41.7 percent), with France (9.2 percent) and Spain (8.5 percent) as the next highest nationalities” employing surrogates in the United States.

### Selling Children

Commercial surrogacy contracts amount to the sale of a child. As David Smolin, a leading legal expert on surrogacy, points out, “intending parents are not merely paying for a child to be created, gestated, and birthed, for they certainly would not be satisfied unless they were also given exclusive physical and legal custody of the child.”

It’s hard to see how this is different in kind from purchasing a designer puppy from a dog breeder. In fact, the primary legal difference between selling a baby—which is rightly illegal—and a commercial surrogacy contract is the timing. If the contract is signed prior to the child’s conception, it is a legal transfer of parental rights from the surrogate to the commissioning parents. However, if the parties sign the contract after the child is conceived, they’re guilty of child trafficking.

While not a party to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, the U.S. has signed and ratified the convention’s optional protocol banning the sale of children. Unfortunately, the official position of the U.S. is that “surrogacy arrangements fall outside the scope” of the protocol’s protections against child exploitation.

### Children’s Rights

Regardless of international law, a child has a natural right to know and be cared for by his or her parents. And parents have a duty to direct the upbringing of their child. A proper understanding of parental rights recognizes the family as the fundamental unit of society and the best protector of children.

In contrast, surrogacy puts the desires of adults over the needs of children. In doing so, it sacrifices the natural right of a child to be cared for by his or her mother and father.

Those who employ surrogates are usually those unable to have their own biological children: single men, same-sex couples, and women who are unable to carry a child. That means any child raised by commissioning parents will have been intentionally separated from at least one of his or her parents. The child born of a surrogate would never consent to the intentional loss of his or her mother.

As child rights advocate Katy Faust explains, surrogacy “splices what should be one woman, ‘mother,’ into three purchasable and optional women.” These are the genetic mother (the egg donor), the birth mother (the surrogate), and the social mother (commissioning parent).

According to Faust, “for children, none of these three mothers are optional, and anytime they are not found in the same woman, the child experiences loss. Surrogacy intentionally, and often commercially, forces a child to lose one or all of them.” That is an injustice against the child, no matter how much the commissioning parents desire to have him or her.

### To Regulate or to Ban?

Alsalem, the UN rapporteur, is no stranger to controversy. During her tenure at the UN, she has already tackled the contentious topics of gender ideology, prostitution, and violence against women and girls in sports. Her latest report on surrogacy was met by its own share of emotional exchanges.

While diplomats from several countries welcomed the report, many bristled at Alsalem’s unequivocal condemnation of surrogacy. The representative from Australia argued that surrogacy “is not inherently exploitative” and that Australia is committed to “ethical surrogacy in accordance with human rights law.”

The South African representative called for regulating surrogacy without banning it. And the diplomat from Spain spoke in favor of “the rights of LGBTQ people” in the context of surrogacy.

But in her conclusion, Alsalem rejected the idea that surrogacy can be both legal and protective of human rights. “The fact is,” she said, “that commissioning parents pivot to where there are the [fewest] regulations, the least safeguards and the cheapest options.”

Urine-based astronaut food to be tested aboard ISS: ‘A key capability for the future of space exploration’

**Call it Pee-cycling: How Astronauts Could Soon Eat Food Made from Urine and Thin Air**

Just in case people thought airline food was inedible, astronauts on future missions to the Moon and Mars could subsist on a brand-new “space food” concocted from thin air and urine, the European Space Agency (ESA) announced.

“This project aims at developing a key resource which will allow us to improve human spaceflight’s autonomy, resilience and also the well-being of our astronauts,” said Angelique Van Ombergen, the ESA’s chief exploration scientist, as reported by The Independent.

The key ingredient? Urea — an organic compound found in urine — which provides the essential nitrogen source for synthesizing protein in space. On Earth, this process is typically facilitated by ammonia.

### The HOBI-WAN Project: Turning Urine into Nutrition

The ESA’s goal is to test whether this “micturate moonshine” can be manufactured aboard the International Space Station (ISS) as part of a pioneering project called HOBI-WAN, which stands for “Hydrogen Oxidizing Bacteria In Weightlessness As a source of Nutrition.”

“The aim of the project is to confirm that our organism grows in the space environment as it does on the ground, and to develop the fundamentals of gas fermentation technology to be used in space — something that has never been done before in the history of humankind,” said Arttu Luukanen, senior vice president of space and defense at Solar Foods, in a statement cited by Space.com.

He also explained the unique challenges faced in microgravity: “The behavior of gases and liquids in microgravity is vastly different due to the lack of buoyancy, which can drastically affect the transport of nutrients and gases for Solein microbes.”

### Why This Innovation Matters

This initiative is not just a quirky experiment. With companies like SpaceX and international space agencies eyeing missions to Mars, sustaining astronauts on these long-distance voyages becomes increasingly crucial.

Currently, the ISS relies on food manufactured on Earth and shipped to the station. While this system works for low-Earth orbit missions, it would be impractical — both financially and logistically — for extended trips to the Moon or Mars.

“For human beings to be able to implement long-duration missions on the Moon, or even one day, to go to Mars, will require innovative and sustainable solutions to be able to survive with limited supplies,” Van Ombergen said.

“With this project, the ESA is developing a key capability for the future of space exploration.”

### What’s Next for Solein?

The team will initially focus on developing this sustainable technology here on Earth over the next eight months. If successful, the manufacturing process will then be trialed in a microgravity environment aboard the ISS.

The hope is that Solein — the protein produced from this process — will eventually become a staple food among astronauts.

“This project is just the beginning. We are working towards reaching operational capability: being able to produce Solein in a range of production scales in space,” Luukanen added.

“Our vision is that by 2035, Solein is the mainstay protein of space explorers.”

As space agencies push the boundaries of exploration, innovations like pee-cycling could transform not only how astronauts eat but how humanity survives beyond Earth.
