The Indian film industry is mourning the loss of legendary actress Sandhya Shantaram, who passed away at the age of 94. The veteran star, celebrated for her graceful performances and remarkable contributions to Indian cinema, breathed her last on Saturday, October 4. Her final rites were performed at Vaikunth Dham in Shivaji Park, Mumbai.
While there has been no official statement from the family regarding the cause of her demise, reports suggest that the actress passed away due to age-related complications. Sandhya’s passing marks the end of an era in Indian cinema, as she was among the last surviving icons of the golden age of Hindi and Marathi films.
Tributes have been pouring in from across the film industry and political circles, as fans and colleagues remember her incredible body of work.
Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express his grief. He wrote:
“Saddened by the passing of legendary actress Sandhya Shantaram Ji. Her iconic roles in films like #Pinjra, #DoAnkhenBarahHath, #Navrang, and #JhanakJhanakPayalBaaje will forever be cherished. Her remarkable talent and mesmerizing dance skills have left an indelible mark on the world of cinema. 🙏 #OmShanti #LegendaryActress #CinematicIcon.”
BJP leader Ashish Shelar also paid his respects, acknowledging her impact on both Hindi and Marathi cinema. He wrote:
“Heartfelt Tribute! The news of the passing of Sandhya Shantaram ji, the renowned actress from the film ‘Pinjra’, is extremely heartbreaking. In the Marathi and Hindi film industries, she left a distinct impression on the audience’s minds with her unparalleled acting and dance skills. Her immortal roles in films like ‘Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje’, ‘Do Aankhen Barah Haath’, and especially in the film ‘Pinjra’ will forever remain etched in the hearts of the audience. May God grant eternal peace to her soul!”
Born as Vijaya Deshmukh on September 13, 1931, Sandhya rose to prominence under the direction of her husband, the legendary filmmaker V. Shantaram. Her filmography includes a series of classics that continue to be celebrated for their innovation and artistry, such as *Amar Bhoopali* (1951), *Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje* (1955), *Do Aankhen Barah Haath* (1958), *Navrang* (1959), and the Marathi masterpiece *Pinjra* (1972).
With her exceptional acting and mesmerizing dance performances, Sandhya Shantaram carved a niche for herself in Indian cinema, leaving behind a legacy that will forever resonate with audiences.

**Nagpur Family on Vacation in Europe Killed in Road Accident**

A Nagpur-based Indian family vacationing in Europe faced a tragic fate when they were involved in a fatal road accident in Italy. The victims have been identified as Javed Akhtar, a 55-year-old hotelier and entrepreneur, and his wife Nadira Gulshan, aged 47.
The couple was traveling with their three children—Arzoo Akhtar (21), Shifa Akhtar, and Jazel Akhtar—when the accident occurred on the Aurelia Highway near Grosseto.
**Accident Details and Investigation**
The family was en route to a sightseeing trip in a nine-seater minibus when a truck collided with their vehicle, which had broken down on the highway. Both Javed Akhtar and Nadira Gulshan, along with the minibus driver, died at the scene.
Javed Akhtar was a well-known hotelier in Nagpur, where his family owns the Gulshan Plaza hotel.
**Medical Response and Condition of Survivors**
Following the crash, the couple’s children sustained injuries of varying severity. Arzoo Akhtar suffered critical head injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Lee Scott Hospital in Siena. Shifa and Jazel Akhtar are recovering at hospitals in Florence and Grosseto respectively.
Notably, Jazel regained consciousness after the accident and promptly called a local helpline for assistance.
Reports from Italien.News mention that rescue efforts faced delays, as it took two fire department teams some time to reach the accident scene. After assessing the seriousness of the injuries, rescue helicopters were deployed to evacuate the victims to nearby hospitals.
**Diplomatic Support and Condolences**
The Indian Embassy in Italy has confirmed the deaths and expressed condolences to the grieving family. On social media platform X, the embassy stated, “The Embassy conveys its heartfelt and sincere condolences for the tragic loss of two Indian nationals from Nagpur in an accident near Grosseto.” They are actively coordinating with local authorities to provide support.

**Tragic Car Accident Claims Lives of Three Members of the Putman Family**

Three members of the Putman family, known from the TLC reality series *Meet The Putmans*, have died in a tragic car accident, with several others hospitalized, RadarOnline.com can report.
In an Instagram post on Saturday, September 27, family member Isabelle confirmed that “Papa” Bill Putman, Neenee, and Aunt Megan lost their lives in the crash. She also revealed that “Uncle Blake, Lulu, Alena, Noah, and Gia” were injured and remain in the hospital.
“We are asking for complete healing and strength for each of them,” she wrote.
Isabelle shared the family’s faith in her statement, writing:
“My entire family — Papa, Neenee, Billy, Jen, Brandon, Kacie, Blake, Megan, Jamie, Blair, myself (Isabelle), Abby, Emma, Addison, Bella, Mercy, Gabby, Noah, Mya, Nova, Lulu, Alena, Gia, Jonah, Eli, Solomon, Uriah, Samson, Luke, and Anna — all proclaim that Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior. He is our hope, our peace, and our salvation. Even in this time of heartbreak, we rest in knowing that God is in control.”
She also asked for “continued prayers for Uncle Blake, Lulu, Alena, Noah, and Gia as they recover, and for our whole family as we walk through this deep loss.”
*Meet The Putmans* originally aired on TLC in 2017 and was later revived on YouTube as *Growing Up Putman*.
Bill, the late patriarch of the Putman family, was previously sentenced to a year of probation and 200 hours of community service in 2022. He was convicted in September of that year on four counts of assault and battery following an incident outside the medical complex the Putman family is building in Caro.
The confrontation involved Bill and a couple of workers, and was caught on cell phone video. Before being sentenced, Bill apologized to one of the victims, Dylan Ireland, saying:
“We could have kept him from getting inside that car without me taking him to the ground and for that Dylan, I am sorry, truly. I’m sorry, I screwed up, but I was scared,” Bill said during his sentencing hearing.
The Putman family and their fans now mourn the loss of their loved ones and hope for the recovery of those injured.
