The San Francisco 49ers are adding a former first-round pick to their practice squad. On Tuesday, they announced the addition of offensive lineman Andre Dillard, the 22nd overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
The 6-foot-5, 315-pound Dillard was originally with the 49ers this past offseason before landing on injured reserve following ankle surgery. He was released in August as the team trimmed down its roster for final cuts. In a corresponding move, the 49ers released offensive lineman Brandon Parker from the practice squad.
**Dillard Had Offseason Ankle Surgery**
After three seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, Dillard joined the Tennessee Titans on a three-year, $29 million contract in March 2023. The Washington State product was named the starting left tackle and made 10 starts. However, the Titans released Dillard the following offseason, and he spent the 2024 campaign with the Green Bay Packers, playing primarily on special teams.
The 49ers signed Dillard in May, expecting him to be their swing tackle. He began training camp on the PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) list due to offseason ankle surgery but was placed on injured reserve even after the 49ers cleared him to practice.
**49ers O-Line Holding Up Amid Injuries**
While injuries have been a significant factor for San Francisco this season, the 49ers remain relatively healthy along the offensive line. The only immediate concern up front is center Jake Brendel, who missed last week’s 26-15 loss to the Houston Texans with a hamstring injury.
Depth could soon be an issue with backups Ben Bartch and Spencer Burford also sidelined, but there’s hope that Dillard can provide veteran insurance moving forward.
The 49ers (5-3) will visit the New York Giants in Week 9.
**Purdy Inching Closer to Return**
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan hasn’t ruled out the possibility of quarterback Brock Purdy returning this Sunday. “It’s too early to say,” Shanahan commented, keeping fans hopeful as the team prepares for the upcoming game.
