Navy sailor dies while rescuing children from high surf in Hawaii

A Navy sailor died in Hawaii while rescuing two children who were struggling to swim in the ocean, officials said Monday. The sailor was identified by the Kauai Police Department as Master-at-Arms 1st Class Jeffrey Diaz, 47. His wife Keyonna Fairley told CBS affiliate HawaiiNewsNow that he was swimming in Kauai’s Waiapua’a Bay with their two sons. The bay is on the grounds of the Pacific Missile Range Facility, where Diaz was stationed. Diaz and the boys were in the water when the younger child was pulled out by a strong wave, Fairley told HawaiiNewsNow. Fairley told the affiliate that Diaz instructed the older child to swim back to shore, then went out to rescue his younger son. “From what my son said, he was in the middle of the ocean and his dad was swimming with one arm trying to get him to safety,” Fairley told HawaiiNewsNow. “Then he got on his dad’s back and swam for a little bit and then my son said that Jeff told him, ‘Ok bub, you’re going to have to get off my back. I’m going to drown. I want you to go. I want you to swim. Don’t stop. You got this. Don’t give up. I love you.’ That was the last words he heard from his dad.” Fairley and the police said both children made it safely back to shore. First responders received a report of a swimmer in distress at around 3 p. m. local time. Responders recovered Diaz from the ocean and began lifesaving efforts. He was then transported to the Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. An autopsy is pending, police said. “The Kaua’i Police Department extends its condolences to the family and loved ones of Master-at-Arms 1st Class Jeffrey Diaz during this difficult time,” police said in a statement. Fairley told HawaiiNewsNow that the family has been on Kauai for three months and that Diaz planned to retire from the military after this deployment.

Police searching for gunman involved in Central Fresno shooting

Fresno Police are pleading for the public’s help, with a gunman on the loose after a deadly weekend shooting in Central Fresno. Around 3: 00 a. m. Saturday, police responded to a report of a fight at an apartment complex near Ninth Street and Olive Avenue. ‘It appears there was a party in one of the apartments of the complex, during which time it became too large and uncontrollable for the individual who was hosting it,” said Fresno Police Lieutenant Brian Valles. Guests were sent out into a common area, and that’s where the fight turned into gunfire, hitting two people. “One was a 33-year-old adult male, who was suffering from gunshot wounds to his lower body. This individual was transported to CRMC, treated, and then released. The other was our victim in this incident, Jordon Aubuchon, 22 years old, Fresno,” said Lt. Valles. Aubuchon was transported to Community Regional Medical Center in Downtown Fresno, where he would die from his injuries. Amid online speculation about the victim’s potential gang involvement, we pressed police about his background. Lt. Valles described him as someone not typically involved in these situations. “Minimal, very minimal criminal history, I think essentially a misdemeanor offense, but nothing indicating, there’s no gang indication or anything like that,” Lt. Valles said. Signs of the tragedy remain at the Laurel Canyon Apartments. Outside sits a small vigil, with candles burning as the rain poured down. And online, family grieving the loss of a young life. calling Aubuchon an “amazing kid,” who “didn’t deserve this.” Police say they’ve spoken to several witnesses but they need the public’s help to find the killer. Lt. Valles said, “I think it’s important that if anyone has any information on the individual who they know did this, because we know that there are witnesses. Being that the fact that there was a large party and by the time the officers got there, everyone was already kind of spread out and dispersed.” Action News did reach out to the victim’s family for a statement, but they declined. Anyone with information regarding a potential suspect is asked to contact the Fresno Police Department.
