Serena Williams’ ex-coach Rennae Stubbs has backed Novak Djokovic to go all the way at the Australian Open 2026, thus breaking Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s stranglehold at the Majors. The two youngsters have won the last eight Majors, and have clearly distanced themselves from the rest of the pack. Speaking on the latest episode of her podcast, the Rennae Stubbs Podcast, Stubbs was going over Alcaraz and Sinner’s dominance this year. She felt that Djokovic is the only real contender to challenge them. I’ve said it over and over, I do think Novak is setting his sights. I don’t think he cared about the ATP Finals, clearly he didn’t play it. Stubbs also highlighted Djokovic’s win over Alcaraz at the Australian Open 2025. According to her, even the Serb would fancy his chances of a title if he gets to the business end of the tournament. “I think he’s the only one that can rock the cherry cart for Jannik and Carlos. Carlos has never made the finals there. Novak crushed him last year, one set was really good, but Novak was overall better. So I think Novak goes in there going, I know I can potentially get to a semifinal there and I know I have maybe one more last grasp,” Stubbs said. Stubbs wasn’t as confident of Djokovic beating Sinner. However, given the Serb’s history in Melbourne, it could be the only place where he has a realistic shot at beating his younger rival. “I don’t think he’d beat someone like Jannik on that court. I think Jannik is just too good on that court. But it might be the one place that Novak can,” she concluded. Djokovic made the semifinals of all four Majors in 2025, and lost to either Sinner or Alcaraz in three of them. He will be keen to one-up them in the coming season after they thwarted his attempts of claiming a record 25th Major title. The LSU Tigers fired Brian Kelly from his coaching role last week. However, surprising stories have surfaced from the program following Kelly’s exit.

On Thursday, former LSU defensive tackle Sydir Mitchell revealed that his decision to leave the team was not his own; rather, he was forced out by Kelly.

“People come to disagreements, but it wasn’t no hard feelings. It was his decision,” Mitchell said. “It wasn’t nobody else’s decision. It was BK’s. He felt like the decision wasn’t fair for the team, even though it had nothing to do with the team. That’s how he felt.”

Mitchell also shared his plans to enter the transfer portal as he considers continuing his football career elsewhere. “I’m finna get in that portal,” he noted. “I just got to finish up school. I’m just staying low key, finishing school, bro.”

Mitchell transferred to LSU ahead of the 2025 season after beginning his collegiate career with the Texas Longhorns in 2023. During his time at Texas, he played in nine games, recording seven tackles and 0.5 tackles for loss across two seasons.

Though Mitchell did not play a snap for the Tigers this season, after two games, Kelly confirmed that the defensive lineman was no longer with LSU, citing failure to meet “workplace standards.”

Democratic incumbents ahead in most WA legislative races

Two potentially vulnerable Democrats in the Washington state Senate appeared poised to retain their seats after an initial ballot count on Tuesday.

Senator Vandana Slatter faced a challenge from a more moderate candidate within her own party, while Victoria Hunt was up against a Republican opponent aiming to chip away at the lopsided balance of power favoring Democrats in Olympia. For both candidates, this was their first time defending their seats.

On Tuesday, Hunt, of Issaquah, comfortably led former state lawmaker Chad Magendanz, a moderate Republican, by a margin of 54.5% to 45.3%. Slatter was ahead of her former state House colleague, Representative Amy Walen, D-Kirkland, with 56% to 42.3% after the ballot drop.

Meanwhile, Representative Edwin Obras trailed fellow Democrat and Burien mayor Kevin Schilling. Schilling, considered the moderate candidate in the race, narrowly led with about 50.2% of the vote to Obras’ 47.2%, with roughly 350 votes separating the candidates.

President Donald Trump loomed over the off-year elections, even in the Democrat-on-Democrat battles. Progressive candidates highlighted their pushback against Trump and attempted to link their opponents to the president’s policies.

Five other Democrats in safe western Washington districts are on track for re-election. Democratic Representatives Janice Zahn and Osman Salahuddin were leading significantly over Republican opponents in Tuesday’s returns. Additionally, state Senators Tina Orwall, D-Des Moines, Emily Alvarado, D-Seattle, and Representative Brianna Thomas ran unopposed.

CF Montreal settles for 1-1 draw with Nashville SC after late goal from Surridge

**Sam Surridge’s Late Header Secures Nashville SC a 1-1 Draw at CF Montreal**

MONTREAL — Sam Surridge’s 80th-minute header forced CF Montreal to settle for a 1-1 draw against Nashville SC in their final home game of the season on Saturday.

Dante Sealy, who has now scored seven goals in his last nine Major League Soccer games, opened the scoring for Montreal (6-17-10). Surridge’s equalizer stopped Nashville (16-11-6) from potentially falling into the play-in bracket.

From kickoff, both teams engaged in expansive and vertical play, creating excellent chances. Nashville’s Hany Mukhtar and Ivan Jaime were both played in alone, but neither could find the opening goal.

Montreal struck first just after the 10-minute mark. After Olger Escobar earned a free kick nearly 25 metres out, Sealy stepped up and unleashed a perfect strike into the top right corner—similar to his free kick goal against Charlotte FC the previous week.

Following the goal, Montreal dropped into a low block as Nashville controlled more than two-thirds of possession until the half-hour mark but were unable to break down an organized Montreal defense.

Just after 30 minutes of play, Montreal thought they had doubled their lead through Prince Owusu, but the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) ruled the goal offside.

Nashville’s control of the ball continued into the second half as they probed around the outside of Montreal’s low block without much penetration. There were several half-chances, including a header from Surridge that struck the post, but Nashville struggled to sustain consistent danger.

With 10 minutes left, Nashville finally got their breakthrough when Surridge separated himself from Brendan Craig and converted a free header from point-blank range.

Sensing an opportunity to clinch a win, Nashville redoubled their efforts to find a late winner, but both teams ultimately left the pitch with a point apiece.
