Chargers’ Daiyan Henley plays through grief after brother’s shooting death

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Daiyan Henley started and played Sunday because football is his escape, and he needed that more than ever after the shooting death of his older brother.

Henley delivered a strong performance with seven tackles, his third sack of the season, a tackle for loss, and a quarterback hit in the Chargers’ 27-20 win over the Tennessee Titans.

“Right now, I’m just floating and the only thing that’s consistent right now in my life, and this is crazy to say, is football,” Henley said after the game. “So for me, that’s why I’m out there — this is the most consistent thing I’ve got in my life right now, and I’m just trying to make the most of it.”

His older brother, Jabari, was killed Friday night in Los Angeles. Despite this tragic loss, Henley traveled with the Chargers and started the game.

Henley was the Chargers’ third-round pick in 2023 out of Washington State and has started every game since the start of the 2024 season.

His father, record executive Eugene “Big U” Henley, has worked with many prominent West Coast rappers, including Snoop Dogg, Kurupt, and the late Nipsey Hussle. Eugene also helped produce and was featured in the 2021 FX documentary series *Hip Hop Uncovered*.

In addition to his music career, Henley’s father is a former gang leader who was arrested in a drug sting and served 12 years of a 23-year sentence.

After the game, Daiyan Henley posted “Love you big bro” on social media.

It has been a challenging year for Henley, who played through illness in a 20-9 win over the Las Vegas Raiders in the second game of the season. He said the Chargers organization has supported him throughout, from ownership to coaches.

Henley credited coach Jim Harbaugh for consistently being there for him.

“He’s probably been the first call I’ve gotten for every situation,” Henley said. “He’s been right there telling me to keep my head down, keep grinding, keep working, and try to stay consistent.”

OPEC+ agrees to pause output hikes next year amid glut fears

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies (OPEC+) agreed on Sunday to a modest increase in oil output for December, followed by a pause in production hikes during the first quarter (Q1) of next year, Reuters reported.

Specifically, the group decided to boost output by 137,000 barrels per day (bpd) in December. This increase matches the production rises scheduled for both October and November. After December, OPEC+ will pause any further output increases from January through March.

At the time of publication, the price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil had risen by 0.75% on the day, reaching $61.15 per barrel.

NYC bodega leaders voice support for Andrew Cuomo— days after rival group rocked by Mamdani endorsement

Leaders of a key New York City bodega and restaurant group are taking the rare step of speaking out about the mayoral election and throwing their support behind Andrew Cuomo, just days after a rival group faced backlash over a Zohran Mamdani endorsement, The Post has learned.

“We don’t endorse candidates,” said Francisco Marte, founder and president of the Bodega and Small Business Group, which represents some 3,000 bodegas, barber shops, beauty salons, mechanics, and restaurants in the Big Apple. “But we favor Andrew Cuomo,” Marte told The Post. “He’s the best of what we have now.”

At issue for many of these small businesses are Mamdani’s plans to open city-owned grocery stores that would offer customers wholesale prices. Small business owners, especially retailers, have also been rattled by Mamdani’s past comments about defunding the police.

Cuomo, the business owners believe, will be tougher on crime and shoplifting. He is “guaranteeing more public safety and is not coming with this crazy idea to compete with us with city-owned grocery stores,” Marte said.

Marte’s group is taking a stand after a rival organization, United Bodegas of America, blindsided its members this week—including its co-founder Fernando Mateo—by endorsing Mamdani. In response, Mateo angrily resigned from the trade group, which The Post exclusively reported on Wednesday.

Now, United Bodegas’ President Radhames Rodriguez, who made the surprise endorsement at a local eatery in the Bronx this week, is losing members, according to Marte and other grocers.

“I think a quarter of the United Bodega Association’s members will leave because they feel betrayed,” Marte told The Post, adding that several have already told him they are jumping ship to his group.

Rodriguez did not immediately respond for comment. His group has about 2,000 members in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, out of roughly 13,000 bodegas in New York City.

“We are planning to ask Mateo to sit with us and to bring members with him to the real association,” said Carlos Collado, who owns two Fine Fare supermarkets in the Bronx and is a vice president of the Bodega and Small Business Group.

Earlier this week, Mateo called Rodriguez’s Mamdani endorsement a “betrayal” and a violation of the trade group’s bylaws as a nonprofit, which is not supposed to publicly back a political candidate.

Mateo also told The Post on Wednesday, “Hundreds of bodega owners already reached out expressing their discontent. I had to explain to them that I had nothing to do with it.”

An outspoken conservative, Mateo unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination in the 2021 mayoral race. However, Mateo and Marte were not always on the same page.

They operated under the same umbrella, Bodega Association of the USA, until 2017, when they had a dispute over who would take the lead at a press conference on crime at bodegas, according to Marte. Subsequently, Mateo and Rodriguez split off to form the United Bodegas of America.

“If we see that we have common ground, we can find a way” to work together again, Marte said.

WR Cupboard is Bare for Tennessee Titans

The Tennessee Titans are performing about as well as anyone could have expected. With a record of 1-5, their sole victory came courtesy of the Arizona Cardinals, who essentially gift-wrapped the win for them.

This rough start to the season culminated in a significant change this week: the firing of head coach Brian Callahan following a heavy defeat to the Las Vegas Raiders. In his place, the Titans have named Mike McCoy as the interim head coach. McCoy’s mission is clear—right the ship and get quarterback Cam Ward playing at an MVP level or close to it.

However, McCoy faces a tough challenge ahead, as the Titans will have to navigate these changes without wide receiver Calvin Ridley. Ridley has been ruled out for this week’s game against the New England Patriots due to a hamstring injury. While this news is disappointing, the silver lining for the Titans might be that they were unlikely to win this game regardless.

### What’s Behind Calvin Ridley?

The real concern isn’t just that the Titans will be without Ridley this Sunday, but what their receiving corps looks like beyond him — which, frankly, is almost nonexistent.

After ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Ridley’s status, his colleague Field Yates provided a look at the Titans’ WR depth chart: Elic Ayomanor, Van Jefferson, and Tyler Lockett.

Tyler Lockett, a recent free-agent acquisition, has recorded eight catches for 52 yards and no touchdowns so far this season. While he was never expected to be a superstar, these numbers are underwhelming for a veteran after six games.

Similarly, Van Jefferson has been only marginally better, with eight catches for 99 yards in the same time frame.

Despite Ridley’s underwhelming performance—he’s been a disappointment for a team that desperately needs him to step up—his absence will still be deeply felt. Sports Illustrated’s Jordon Lawrenz highlights a stark reality: “Even with his disappointing season, Ridley accounts for over 26% of this team’s receiving yards. His 290 yards lead the way, even though he’s only hauled in 16 of 35 targets. Elic Ayomanor’s 34 targets rank second, while Okonkwo is third at 30. Beyond those three, no one has more than 19 targets.”

### Can Mike McCoy Help Cam Ward?

As interim head coach, McCoy’s primary responsibility is to nurture Cam Ward into the player he was projected to be when the Titans drafted him first overall in this year’s NFL Draft.

Ward’s performance hasn’t been terrible considering the minimal support he’s had on offense and defense, but improvement is imperative. He understands his role, embraces the coaching change, and realizes he’ll need to operate without reliable wide receiver help—Ridley or not.

“My job is to play quarterback, and my job is to help lead this team to wins,” Ward said. “I am going to support whatever decision we make as an organization, and the guys in the locker room are going to support it. At the end of the day, with coach or without coach, we are trying to win football games and that is the same message coach Mike is preaching. We just have to live by it and stay true to it.”

With Ridley sidelined, rookie Elic Ayomanor becomes Ward’s best option, which underscores the Titans’ precarious position heading into this critical stretch of the season.
