By MARK SHERMAN WASHINGTON (AP) Texas on Friday asked the Supreme Court for an emergency order to be allowed to use a congressional redistricting plan pushed by President Donald Trump that is favorable to Republicans in the 2026 elections despite a lower court ruling that it likely discriminates on the basis of race. The state is calling on the high court to intervene to avoid confusion as congressional primary elections approach in March. The justices have blocked past lower-court rulings in congressional redistricting cases, most recently in Alabama and Louisiana, that came several months before elections. Texas redrew its congressional map in the summer as part of Trump’s efforts to preserve a slim Republican majority in the House in next year’s elections, touching off a nationwide redistricting battle. The new redistricting map was engineered to give Republicans five additional House seats, but a panel of federal judges in El Paso ruled 2-1 Tuesday that the civil rights groups that challenged the map on behalf of Black and Hispanic voters were likely to win their case. If the ruling holds for now, Texas could be forced to hold elections next year using the map drawn by the GOP-controlled Legislature in 2021 based on the 2020 census. Texas was the first state to meet Trump’s demands in what has become an expanding national battle over redistricting. Republicans drew the state’s new map to give the GOP five additional seats, and Missouri and North Carolina followed with new maps adding an additional Republican seat each. To counter those moves, California voters approved a ballot initiative to give Democrats an additional five seats there. The redrawn maps are facing court challenges in California, Missouri and North Carolina.

Napa man indicted on triple murder charges in death of pregnant fiancee
A Napa man has been indicted by a grand jury and will face trial in the killing of his pregnant fiancee and her unborn twins, prosecutors announced Friday. Ernie Victor Solis, 41, is charged with three counts of murder in the June 8 death of 33-year-old Hailey Privett and her unborn children. Prosecutors initially filed one murder charge, then added two more to reflect the deaths of the twins, who were due in December. In most criminal cases, a judge reviews evidence during what’s known as a preliminary hearing to decide whether a case should go to trial. Instead, prosecutors presented this case to a grand jury a confidential legal process in which a group of residents reviews evidence and decides whether charges should move forward. After hearing testimony over three days, the grand jury indicted Solis on Wednesday. Carlos Villatoro, a spokesperson for the Napa County District Attorney’s Office, said he couldn’t discuss why prosecutors chose the grand jury process. He said the approach is sometimes used in complex or sensitive cases or those receiving widespread public attention. Solis is set to enter a plea Nov. 25. If convicted as charged, he faces life in prison without the possibility of parole. According to court records, the killing is believed to have occurred hours before police were notified. Surveillance footage shows Privett’s GMC Acadia leaving her Dale Drive home around 2: 15 a. m. June 8. A short time later, a California Highway Patrol officer spotted the SUV on Highway 29 and attempted a traffic stop. The driver accelerated, reaching 130 mph, and the officer ended the chase for safety reasons, according to court documents. License-plate cameras detected the vehicle in Vallejo shortly before 3 a. m. It wasn’t until about 10: 30 that morning that family members discovered Privett in a bedroom and called police. Officers found an 8-inch kitchen knife stained with blood inside the bedroom, and court filings say Privett’s youngest child was asleep nearby when she was killed. Officers found Privett’s SUV abandoned just before 1 p. m. in Vallejo. The vehicle was covered in blood, and Solis’ wallet and driver’s license were inside, according to investigators. Detectives tracked Solis to Fairfield, where they arrested him the night of June 9. During the drive back to Napa, officers noted injuries to his hands and reported that he made comments about the earlier pursuit. Court records also reference a text Solis allegedly sent to a relative before the killing in which he discussed the pregnancy. In it, he wrote: “I’m really thinking about saying that we need to have an abortion and just wait for a better time to have kids. That should wise her up.”.

‘Rental Family’, Top Sundance Docs Debut On ‘Wicked’ Weekend With Few New Releases — Specialty Preview
Searchlight Pictures’ TIFF-premiering Rental Family and two Sundance prize-winning documentaries Cutting Through Rocks and Zodiac Killer Project are among new indie releases this weekend but most steered clear of Universal’s juggernaut Wicked: For Good. Sony Pictures Classics is launching an Academy run for Sylvain Chomet’s (The Triplets of Belleville, The Illusionist) Cannes-premiering animated features A Magnificent Life (French title Marcel et Monsieur Pagnol), a biopic of the legendary French novelist, at the Village East in NY and Laemmle Royal in LA. Bleecker Street’s Rebuilding by Max Walker-Silverman starring Josh O’Connor starts a slow rollout to ten theaters from two in NYC. m. ET on 700+ screens. Rental Family By Japanese director Hikari, set in modern-day Tokyo, stars Brendan Fraser as an out-of-work American actor who struggles to find purpose until he landing an unusual gig working for a Japanese “rental family” agency, playing stand-in roles for strangers. As he immerses himself in his clients’ worlds, he begins to form genuine bonds that blur the lines between performance and reality. The family comedy is 87% Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, see Deadline’s review. Wit Takehiro Hira (Shōgun), Akira Emoto, Mari Yamamoto and Shino Shinozaki. Cutting Through Rocks winner of the Sundance Grand Jury Prize for World Cinema Documentary, opens at NYC’s Film Forum and expands to select cities beginning Dec. 5. It hit DOC NYC’s Short List, and the IDFA doc fest in Amsterdam ahead of its New York debut. Music Box Films opens Zodiac Killer Project at IFC Film Center with a national expansion to follow. The winner of the 2025 Sundance Film Festival: NEXT Innovator Award is directed and narrated by Charlie Shackleton, who deconstructs the true crime documentary with a deep dive into our obsession with serial killers and the stories we tell about them. The film started as another project, the account of a highway patrolman’s effort to identify and capture the infamous Zodiac Killer. Shackleton began collecting interviews and shot evocative B-roll footage of ghostly California freeways and parking lots where the killer may have once lurked. When that film fell apart, he was left with fragments of the unfinished film “and time to ruminate on shortcuts and signifiers of the ubiquitous genre.” New indie distributor Obscured Releasing is out with its first film, Stop the Insanity: Finding Susan Powter, Zeberiah Newman’s documentary about the fitness and nutrition powerhouse who was a 1990s superstar only to later disappear. Jamie Lee Curtis serves as executive producer. Opened at Cinema Village in New York after a debut at Laemmle Noho in LA this week. “In the ’90s, pop culture icon Susan Powter burst onto the scene with her signature bleach-blonde buzz cut and bold message of health and wellness,” reads a synopsis. “After conquering infomercials, becoming a New York Times bestselling author, hosting her own talk show, and seeing her face on thousands of products, she dramatically walked away from Hollywood and into obscurity. Crippling lawsuits with her business partners left her bankrupt, and she has since lived as a total recluse below the poverty line in Las Vegas, where the filmmaker ultimately finds her.” MORE.

Jeff Bezos Warns of a Market Crash in the Coming Months, Advises People Against Big-Ticket Purchases
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has issued a stark warning about the fragile state of the global economy. In an interview with CNN, Bezos advised consumers and small businesses to hold off on significant purchases and capital expenditures as fears of a recession intensify. He also emphasized the importance of cautious financial planning during these uncertain times. Optimism for the Future While emphasising caution in the near term, Bezos maintained an optimistic outlook for the long-term prospects of the economy. He expressed confidence that the American Dream remains achievable and hinted that space travel could become more accessible to the public within his lifetime. Bezos’ recent comments align with his social media post on X last month, where he urged industries to ‘batten down the hatches’ amid turbulent times ahead for both consumers and businesses. Many experts agree that adapting to these changes will be crucial for economic stability. US Economy on the Brink of Recession Moody’s chief economist, Mark Zandi, echoed Bezos’ concerns, warning that the US could be on the cusp of a recession. In a social media post, Zandi highlighted that nearly a third of US states-accounting for a significant portion of the country’s GDP-are either already in or at high risk of recession. ‘States making up nearly a third of US GDP are either in or at high risk of recession,’ Zandi stated. ‘Another third are just holding steady, and the remaining third are growing.’ The data presents a mixed picture, with some traditionally strong Southern states experiencing a slowdown. States such as Wyoming, Montana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Kansas, and Massachusetts have been identified as exhibiting high recession risks. Meanwhile, economic challenges in the Washington, DC area-partly due to recent government job cuts-are also a concern. Additionally, inflationary pressures are expected to persist into the coming years, further complicating economic recovery efforts. Inflation and Economic Outlook Zandi predicts that inflation could rise to 4% by 2026, exacerbating the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. This projection raises alarms about household budgets and purchasing power amid economic uncertainty. Reassessing Immigration Policies The US government’s restrictive immigration policies could also negatively impact the tech sector, according to Zandi. He urged lawmakers to safeguard access to global talent, especially in AI, software engineering, and data science. ‘If it feels like we’re coming to the end of the tariff increases, or like we’re going to get a more rational immigration policy, I think that would be a signal that the coast may be clear,’ he told Business Insider. He primarily blamed economic struggles on rising US tariffs and immigration policies. ‘Tariffs are cutting increasingly deeply into the profits of American companies and the purchasing power of American households. Fewer immigrant workers means a smaller economy,’ Zandi concluded. While there are cautious signs and serious concerns about the near-term economic outlook, many experts remain hopeful that thoughtful policy adjustments and innovation can help steer the economy toward a more stable future.

Nigeria: Armed bandits kidnap 52 children from Catholic boarding school
OAN Staff Blake Wolf 1: 15 PM Friday, November 21, 2025 Armed bandits attacked St. Mary’s Catholic boarding school on Friday in the Papiri community of Agwara, Niger State, Nigeria, at around 2 a. m. local time, abducting at least 52 schoolchildren, along with an unspecified number of staff. However, while the majority of reports mention “52” schoolchildren being taken, other sources suggest that even more may have been taken. This occurred despite a prior government warning to boarding schools in the area to close due to heightened threats which the school ignored according to surfacing reports. Meanwhile, the international community has expressed growing outrage over the escalating violence in Nigeria, where Islamic militants have targeted both Protestant and Catholic communities. However, the identities of the most recent attackers are currently unknown, and no organization has publicly taken credit for the raid. “Police tactical units, military components and other security agencies have moved to the scene, combing the forests with a view to rescue the abducted students,” local police wrote in a statement. The school educates students aged 12-17 years old. During the attack, a school security staffer was also “badly shot,” according to the Associated Press, citing a statement released by the Catholic Diocese of Kontagora. Following the attack, the Niger state government released a statement revealing that the “unfortunate incident comes despite prior intelligence” warning of threats, and the governor’s order to temporarily close all boarding schools in the region. “Regrettably, St. Mary’s School proceeded to reopen and resume academic activities without notifying or seeking clearance from the State Government, thereby exposing pupils and the staff to avoidable risk,” stated Abubakar Usam, the secretary to the Niger state government. The kidnappings follow a string of violence and kidnappings in Nigeria, including the abduction of 25 schoolgirls in the nearby Kebbi state on Monday. Analysts say that bandits often target schools and travelers for ransom, which is especially common in northern Nigeria. On Tuesday, rapper and singer Nicki Minaj delivered a four-minute speech at a U. S.-organized event at the United Nations headquarters in New York City, focusing on the escalating violence against Christians in Nigeria. The panel, titled “Combating Religious Violence and the Killing of Christians in Nigeria,” was hosted by U. S. Ambassador Mike Waltz and featured faith leaders and victims. “In Nigeria, Christians are being targeted, driven from their homes and killed. Churches have been burned. Families have been torn apart and entire communities live in fear constantly, simply because of how they pray,” Manaj stated. “Sadly, this problem is not only a growing problem in Nigeria, but also in so many other countries across the world, and it demands urgent action,” she continued. “And I want to be clear, protecting Christians in Nigeria is not about taking sides or dividing people. It is about uniting humanity.” Additionally, at the start of November, President Donald Trump threatened to send the military into Nigeria to “completely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists” slaughtering Christians. “If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U. S. A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well go into that now disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’ to completely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities,” Trump wrote at the time. “I am hereby instructing our Department of War to prepare for possible action. If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our CHERISHED Christians! WARNING: THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT BETTER MOVE FAST!” Stay informed!
