Small Earthquakes Strike San Francisco Bay Area

A minor 3.8-magnitude earthquake struck the San Francisco Bay Area on Sunday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). It was one of several quakes that occurred in quick succession.

The temblor happened at 9:38 a.m. Pacific Time, about 2 miles southeast of San Ramon, California, USGS data shows. Earlier reports from the agency had listed the magnitude as 3.7.

As seismologists continue to review available data, they may revise the earthquake’s reported magnitude. Additional information may also prompt USGS scientists to update the shake-severity map.

Aftershocks can occur days, weeks, or even years after the initial earthquake. These events can be of equal or larger magnitude and have the potential to affect already damaged areas.
