**Gandhi Jayanti: Honoring the Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi**
Gandhi Jayanti, observed annually on October 2, commemorates the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, one of India’s most revered leaders. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat.
During the British Raj, Mahatma Gandhi led numerous campaigns against British rule, including the Kheda Satyagraha, Champaran Satyagraha, Salt Satyagraha, Quit India Movement, and the Non-Cooperation Movement. His efforts played a pivotal role in India’s struggle for independence.
Gandhi’s principles of *ahimsa* (non-violence) and *satyagraha* (truth and civil disobedience) became the moral foundation of the Indian independence movement. These philosophies inspired millions and continue to influence civil rights movements worldwide.
At the age of 13, Gandhi married Kasturba Gandhi. Known for his modest beginnings, Gandhi was considered an average student in school. He excelled in English but had poor handwriting.
One of Gandhi’s greatest contributions was his belief in self-reliance. He promoted *khadi* (handspun cloth) and the spinning wheel as symbols of economic independence and resistance against British economic policies.
Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated in 1948, and his funeral procession extended over 8 kilometers, reflecting the immense respect and love he commanded across the nation.
