Matt Boldy scores a pair as Wild streak hits seven

**Wild Extend Winning Streak to Seven with 5-2 Victory Over Oilers**

ST. PAUL — With the band mostly back together, the Minnesota Wild made the goal horn wail once again on Saturday, securing their seventh straight win. Matt Boldy led the charge with two first-period goals as the Wild, playing with a healthier lineup after five regulars returned, relied on solid defense through the final two periods to hold off a determined Edmonton Oilers squad, winning 5-2.

Ryan Hartman’s opportunistic goal in the dying seconds of the opening period proved to be the difference-maker. Vladimir Tarasenko added insurance in the third period — his fourth goal in the past three games — helping the Wild improve to 4-0-0 since last week’s blockbuster trade for Quinn Hughes. Tarasenko later set up Nico Sturm for an empty-net goal with 85 seconds remaining.

“It’s exciting for sure,” Hughes said. “I think the team’s won seven in a row. I’ve been here for four. It’s exciting. We got two more before Christmas, hopefully grab those.”

Filip Gustavsson was busy all afternoon against Edmonton’s talented offense, finishing with 28 saves and improving his record to 12-8-3 as Minnesota’s starting goaltender.

“We know who to look out for out there against that team,” Hartman said, referencing Oilers stars Connor McDavid — who had a goal — and Leon Draisaitl, who contributed two assists. “You know the line that was matched up with them did a great job. We locked down the front of the net for the most part, pucks weren’t getting through, and when they did, Gus made some big saves. So, good team win.”

Boldy, who entered the contest with a three-game scoring streak, quickly extended it to four when he intercepted a puck from Oilers defenseman Mattias Ekholm at the defensive blue line. On the ensuing breakaway, Boldy’s crafty backhand slipped past the Edmonton goalie’s glove side less than five minutes into the game.

Near the midway point of the first period, Draisaitl was penalized for cross-checking and then drew a second minor for unsportsmanlike conduct after protesting too vehemently. On the ensuing extended power play, Boldy showed no subtlety. Taking a pass from Hughes, he blasted the puck high on the stick side past Calvin Pickard, doubling the Wild’s lead.

“Breakaway was just kind of a reaction and then kind of a slower pass on the power play, so I tried to go to the far side,” Boldy said after recording his third multi-goal game of the season.

The Oilers responded quickly, with Hartman finishing a nice give-and-go pass from Jake Middleton with 7.2 seconds left in the first period.

Edmonton had numerous chances on a power play early in the middle frame but couldn’t find the back of the net. The Wild also benefitted from some good fortune when a shot by Oilers defenseman Evan Bouchard clanged off the inside of the post behind Gustavsson and bounced away safely. Minnesota’s defensive effort was highlighted by 20 blocked shots.

“Yeah. You know, it’s so fun to see. The goalies always appreciate it so much,” Gustavsson said of the team’s collective defensive effort. “You can’t cover all your body with pads as a player, and they still go out there and block those one-timer shots. And it doesn’t matter if it’s a skill guy or not, and you love to see that.”

Tarasenko, acquired in a July trade with Detroit, had been relatively quiet early in his tenure with the Wild but now has five goals since returning from an injury in late November. He scored on a loose puck in the crease behind Pickard after an initial shot by Yakov Trenin.

“Vladdy is skating really well, he’s ultra-competitive, he’s getting shots off,” Wild coach John Hynes said. “I felt like, since he’s gotten here, his responsibility in his play without the puck, from a defensive standpoint, has always been strong. Now he’s just getting rewarded for his hard work.”

Pickard finished the game with 32 saves for the Oilers, who had won four of their previous five games but are now 0-2-0 against the Wild this season.

The Wild’s three-game pre-Christmas homestand continues Sunday evening when Central Division-leading Colorado Avalanche make their second visit to St. Paul this season. The Wild claimed victory in their first meeting, winning 3-2 in a shootout on the day after Thanksgiving.

NFL insider spells doom for Bills’ coaches amid questions around Sean McDermott’s future

Peter Schrager said turbulence is on the horizon for the Buffalo Bills’ coaching staff, but he doesn’t expect coach Sean McDermott to be on the chopping block. Ad Schrager, an analyst for NFL Network, discussed the Bills’ situation during an appearance on “UNSPORTSMANLIKE Radio” on Friday after Buffalo’s 23-19 loss to Houston. Thanks for the submission! “I think Sean McDermott, I would imagine it gets more than just one year if like this thing falls off a cliff right now. And if anything, I would think that he and Brandon [Beane] being together have a long relationship going back to their Carolina days that he’s not gonna be the fall guy. I would think it might be one of the coordinators or there might be changes with personnel,” Schrager said. Sean McDermott has led the Bills since 2017, guiding them to multiple playoff runs. But with a 7-4 record and an offense struggling to find rhythm, criticism has intensified. Concerns over offensive identity and missing playmakers escalate pressure for Sean McDermott Peter Schrager highlighted a broader issue plaguing Buffalo’s playoff push: a lack of reliable receiving threats outside of running back James Cook. Ad “I think the truth of the matter is who’s gonna beat anybody on the outside for the Buffalo Bills . That was a problem against the Patriots that day where they lost, there’s a problem against the Falcons when they lost that game and it was a problem last night and Gabe Davis makes a great catch steps outta bounds and it’s like that was our opportunity,” Schrager said. Ad “The truth of the matter is they’re not scared of anybody on the wide receiver group and outside of James Cook, there’s no one that keeps you up at night. So it’s all on Josh. They have to make some changes. They have to be able to, you know, offer more than that, but I wouldn’t imagine Sean McDermott is gonna be in danger of losing his job.” Ad Josh Allen was caught on broadcast cameras shouting at the sideline after a stalled fourth-and-one attempt and later slammed his helmet while speaking with backup Mitch Trubisky. The quarterback finished the game without a passing touchdown, was intercepted twice and sacked a career-high eight times. Afterward, Allen expressed dissatisfaction with the late play-call sequence, saying the team should have taken a timeout to avoid confusion. McDermott backed offensive coordinator Joe Brady in his postgame media session, calling him a strong leader and insisting the offensive staff remains aligned. He also stressed the need to better protect Josh Allen, noting the 12 hits absorbed in the loss as unsustainable. × Feedback Why did you not like this content? Rico Dowdle jokes about ‘GoFundMe’ after revealing NFL fined Panthers RB for ‘Key & Peele’ celebration vs. Packers

Carolina Panthers running back Rico Dowdle turned his NFL fine into a charitable moment after being penalized for his touchdown celebration against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

Following his third-quarter touchdown in the Panthers’ 16-13 victory, Dowdle mimicked the popular “Key & Peele” sketch featuring the character Hingle McCringleberry. He performed two hip thrusts before stopping. Despite adhering to the sketch’s “two-pump” rule, officials flagged him for unsportsmanlike conduct. On Wednesday, Dowdle revealed on social media that the NFL had fined him for the celebration.

Jokingly, Dowdle tweeted, “Starting a GoFundMe 🤣 they got me 🥹,” hinting at raising money to cover the fine. However, the running back took it a step further by actually launching a GoFundMe campaign—not to pay the fine, but to raise funds for the Children’s Home Society of North Carolina.

“After much thought, I’ve launched a GoFundMe for my fines,” Dowdle wrote. “Key said I got three pumps but I guess the NFL disagrees.” He then explained the real purpose behind the fundraiser and praised the organization’s work in family preservation, adoption, and foster care.

“Actually, 100% of what is raised through this fundraiser will be sent to Children’s Home Society of North Carolina,” he added. “Children’s Home Society promotes the right of every child to a permanent, safe, and loving family. They specialize in education and prevention programs, family preservation, and adoption and foster care. Let’s raise some money.”

By Thursday morning, the fundraiser had already collected over $14,700.

### Comedian Keegan-Michael Key Responds

Comedian Keegan-Michael Key weighed in on the penalty. Referencing his iconic “Key & Peele” character Hingle McCringleberry, Key posted on Instagram:

“Rico! Man, you got robbed you only did two pumps. I’m sorry, man. Now I’m gonna have to write a new sketch.”

### Panthers Coach Comments on Incident

Panthers coach Dave Canales also addressed the situation:

“We’ve got to be smarter in that situation. We’ve got to make sure that we understand the rules. I might have to call up Keegan-Michael Key to get clarification on that part of it.”

### Dowdle’s Reaction to the Fine

Dowdle admitted he was initially confused by the penalty.

“From my understanding and everything I’ve learned, we go over stuff like this every week,” he said post-game. “I definitely think you’re supposed to get two pumps. Hopefully, I don’t get a fine.”

Rico Dowdle finished the game with 130 rushing yards, including a crucial 19-yard run that set up Carolina’s game-winning field goal.
