Team India skipper Shubman Gill has reportedly been released from the squad due to his concerning neck injury ahead of the second Test against South Africa in Guwahati. The ace batter’s availability for the must-win clash was always a huge question mark since he walked off the field on Day 2 of the series opener at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. There was slight optimism after Shubman Gill was part of the travelling squad to Guwahati for the second Test. While Team India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak mentioned during a pre-match press conference that the player is recovering well, he was not seen in the practice sessions during the build-up to the Test. Inevitably, India have been forced to take the drastic measure of releasing their skipper midway through a series while battling a deficit. According to a report by the Times of India, Gill has already left Guwahati, and will be travelling to Mumbai to meet a specialist to combat the issue in his neck, which is seeming to be a crippling problem. “India Test captain Shubman Gill has been released from the squad ahead of the Guwahati Test and has already left for Mumbai on Friday. The youngster travelled with the side on November 19 but didn’t turn up for training on November 20. It is learnt that he will be resting in Mumbai for the next two-three days before seeking specialist opinion from Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala. As of now, there is no trip planned to the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) and more clarity is expected in the coming days,” the report mentions. Dinshaw Pardiwala is a renowned orthopedic surgeon who specialises in sports medicine. He was closely involved in Rishabh Pant’s recovery after his serious car accident in late 2024, which resulted in some major injuries. The doctor has also been consulted in recent times when it comes to the injuries that the likes of Shreyas Iyer and Pratika Rawal sustained while playing for Team India. Team India recalled Nitish Kumar Reddy into the squad after Shubman Gill’s injury ahead of IND vs SA 2025 2nd Test The Men in Blue immediately recalled all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy into the squad after Shubman Gill did not return to the field or bat in the second innings after walking off on Day 2. The skipper was hospitalised, with deputy Rishabh Pant taking over the leadership duties. Nitish Kumar Reddy was released from the Test squad at the last minute in Kolkata as India planned to feature four spinners in their playing XI. He joined the India ‘A’ squad in Rajkot to play in the List A matches against South Africa ‘A’.

“I am happy with Surya’s 10-ball 20” – Legendary spinner’s huge statement on India’s captain knock in AUS vs IND 2025 4th T20I
Legendary Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin expressed satisfaction with skipper Suryakumar Yadav’s cameo in the fourth T20I of the five-match series against Australia. The match was held at Carrara Oval in Queensland on Thursday, November 6.
Asked to bat first, India finished at 167/8 in their 20 overs, with Shubman Gill top-scoring with 46 off 39 balls, including four fours and one six. Meanwhile, skipper Suryakumar Yadav walked in at No. 4 and made 20 off 10 balls, including two sixes.
In response, Washington Sundar took three wickets as the hosts were bowled out for 119 in 18.2 overs, losing the game by 48 runs.
Following the match, during a discussion on his YouTube channel, Ashwin lauded Suryakumar’s timely knock and said:
“10 balls for 20 from Suryakumar Yadav was extremely valuable. I always think in T20 cricket, 10 balls for 20 at a 200 strike rate is more valuable because even today, Abhishek and Shubman had a decent partnership at the opening. So Surya came in and gave that amazing impetus and momentum. I would always think 10 balls for 20 is way more valuable than a strike rate of less than 125, 120, or 130 in a T20 game, unless, of course, you are chasing a game.”
He added, “If you’re chasing and players are going all out and blazing away, on one side you have to play in double gear, but today, with the wicket, everyone knows that 160 is a good score. So the way Shubman paced the innings, that’s the way he had to play, and he did that. So credit where it’s due, but I am happy with Surya’s 10-balls-20, what he could do, he did.”
Overall, in four games so far, Suryakumar has scored 84 runs at an average of 28.00 and a strike rate of 171.42.
**“Someone you cannot hit so easily” – R Ashwin heaps praise on India all-rounder**
In the same video, Ravichandran Ashwin praised Axar Patel, who won the Player of the Match award in the fourth T20I for his unbeaten 21 off 11 balls and for taking two wickets. The 39-year-old commended Axar’s bowling skills, saying:
“One thing I noticed about Axar is that batsmen are getting done on the inside, especially right-handers. Always, if you look at left-arm spinners bowling to right-handers, when they bowl quick, the ball comes inside like an arm ball. But for Axar, even when he bowls slower, the ball drops and comes in slowly like that.”
“Several times, Marsh tried to go over the covers, and Josh Inglis tried as well, but still the ball hit inside and went to the leg side.”
He continued, “So Axar’s beauty is in the changing of pace, but still not allowing the ball to go on the same line. Either the ball stops and spins a little, or the ball stops and comes inside on the same line. That makes it often a little tricky for the batsman, someone you cannot hit so easily.”
“The only challenge the Indian spin bowling attack might have in India is where the match is being played and how small the ground is. That is the only thing that will dictate how it goes,” he added.
India and Australia will return to action for the final T20I on Saturday, November 8, at The Gabba in Brisbane.

“On which basis he is playing in T20?” – Fans troll Shubman Gill mercilessly after yet another failure in AUS vs IND 2025 3rd T20I
India vice-captain Shubman Gill failed to deliver with the bat in the third T20I against Australia in Hobart on Sunday, November 2. The right-handed batter departed for 15 runs off 12 deliveries as the Men in Blue lost both their openers inside the powerplay. Nathan Ellis trapped him lbw plumb. Gill took a DRS review, but the replay showed the ball would have crashed into the stumps.
Gill had previously managed just five runs in the second T20I, where India lost by four wickets. In his last 10 innings, the Punjab batter has managed 184 runs at an average of 23 without scoring a half-century.
Fans on X trolled Shubman Gill for yet another failure Down Under. One user wrote:
“Shubman Gill gone on 15 runs. On which basis is he playing in T20?”
Another user commented:
“Why is Shubman Gill still in the playing XI?”
A third user added:
“Having said it time and again, Shubman Gill is the biggest fraud in the shorter formats. When will the new poster boy of Indian team be replaced by the deserving Jaiswal?”
Here are a few more reactions:
𝒐𝒙𝒚𝒈𝒆𝒏⁴⁵ (@TheHitmanGirlX):
“Shubman Gill loses his wicket early again after stat-padding for 10 balls and hitting a boundary on the 11th. 😬😬 #INDvsAUS”
MANU. (@IMManu_18):
“SHUBMAN GILL IN 2025 T20Is – 20*(9), 10(7), 5(8), 47(28), 29(19), 4(3), 12(10), 37*(20), 5(10), 15(12). But Ajit Agarkar, Gautam Gambhir, Suryakumar Yadav going with Gill ahead of Yashasvi Jaiswal & Sanju Samson as an opener.”
Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan also slammed Shubman Gill after the 2nd T20I. The cricketer-turned-analyst recently questioned Gill’s poor form in T20Is, pointing out how the opener has failed to deliver big in his last 10 games. On his YouTube channel, Pathan said:
“Questions will also be raised about Shubman Gill. Look, Shubman Gill has replaced Sanju Samson, who had scored three centuries, to open the innings for India’s T20 team. In his last ten innings, he hasn’t even scored a total of 200 runs, so the pressure will be on him. He’s getting opportunities, he’s getting the backing, but he needs to convert those chances into performances, which hasn’t happened yet.”
Chasing 187, India were 87/3 after 8.3 overs, with Axar Patel and Tilak Varma at the crease. The Men in Blue are currently 0-1 behind in the five-match series.
