Bishop McDevitt edges Peters Township on walk-off field goal

**ALTOONA** — As the Peters Township football players exited the field with tears in their eyes, many of their family members gathered to offer a round of applause and cheers. The acknowledgment was well-deserved. For the second week in a row, the Indians staged a remarkable comeback from a double-digit deficit. This time, however, the game ended in heartbreak.

Aidan Grella kicked a 24-yard field goal as time expired, giving Bishop McDevitt a 31-28 victory over Peters Township on Saturday in the PIAA Class 5A semifinals at Mansion Park Stadium.

The Indians (13-1) erased an 11-point halftime deficit and briefly held the lead in the fourth quarter but couldn’t quite finish off the defending state champion Crusaders (12-2).

“We were right in there, and no matter how much we are down, there’s always a chance for us,” said Peters Township coach TJ Plack. “It was a good football game, and I think we were evenly matched. Both teams made good adjustments, and they were well-coached. They’re a really good team and have been for a while.”

Bishop McDevitt will defend its state title against Roman Catholic at 7 p.m. Friday at Cumberland Valley. The matchup is a rematch of last year’s final.

Anthony Maiello tied the game at 25-25 with a 24-yard field goal with 1:33 remaining. However, the Crusaders marched down the field in the final minute. The pivotal play was a 41-yard pass to Ishmael Palmer that set up the game-winning field goal.

Peters Township blitzed aggressively, but Crusaders quarterback Sebastian Williams stood firm in the pocket and delivered a precise strike.

“We had some built-in plays that will beat almost any zone,” said Crusaders coach Jeff Weachter. “What we were trying to do was get it inside the 40-yard line to kick a field goal, and (Williams) did a good job going to the built-in hot route. It was a double A-gap blitz, and we made the play.”

Peters Township trailed 21-10 at halftime but narrowed the gap in the third quarter when Nolan DiLucia connected with Lucas Rost for an 8-yard touchdown. DiLucia then hit Lehman on the two-point conversion, cutting the deficit to 21-18.

DiLucia, a Villanova recruit, threw a perfect 70-yard touchdown pass to PJ Luke at the 7:15 mark of the fourth quarter, giving the Indians a 25-21 lead.

“He was under a lot of pressure because we were skin and bones on the offensive line,” Plack said. “We had a couple guys I didn’t think were going to play at all this year, and they were out there in the state semifinals. We were trying to find ways to protect him. He took a couple hits but stood in the pocket and delivered. He’s a big-time player.”

Williams responded with a 26-yard touchdown pass to Jontay Quick three minutes later to put Bishop McDevitt back on top, 28-25.

Despite being penalized 18 times for 173 yards, Bishop McDevitt managed to find a way to win. There were two unusual instances in the first half when two personal fouls were assessed on one team on the same play—one live ball foul and one dead ball foul. This happened first to Peters Township and led to a touchdown on a 27-yard punt return by Palmer. The same sequence happened to Bishop McDevitt on the next Peters Township drive and resulted in a Maiello field goal.

Cole Neupaver had the lone touchdown for the Indians in the first half on a 6-yard run, following an interception he secured that set up the drive.

Williams opened the scoring with a 58-yard touchdown pass to Howard Holton Jr. He finished the game completing 16 of 23 passes for 260 yards. Bishop McDevitt also got a 42-yard touchdown run to the end zone by Eastern Michigan recruit Nazir Jones-Davis to secure the double-digit halftime lead.

Despite the deficit, both teams knew the game was far from over.

“We told them at halftime that this team wouldn’t go away,” Weachter said. “They’re very well-coached and have tough kids. We knew they wouldn’t give up, and they didn’t. It’s almost a shame that one team had to lose because these were two great teams.”

For Peters Township, this game marked the farewell to a senior class that won two WPIAL titles, played in a state championship, and reached a state semifinal.

“They are special,” Plack said. “We had a couple senior groups before them that took us to our first conference championship and then our first WPIAL championship, and these guys taking us this far is amazing. We have a great locker room because of them, and they’ve been mentors to the younger guys. They do the right thing at all times, and that’s why we are in these situations.”

Jeremiah Robinson-Earl Signs Second 10-Day Deal With Indiana Pacers

**Indiana Pacers Re-Sign Forward Jeremiah Robinson-Earl to Second 10-Day Contract**

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Pacers have re-signed forward Jeremiah Robinson-Earl to another 10-day contract, the team announced on Tuesday. This marks Robinson-Earl’s second 10-day agreement with Indiana this season.

The Pacers were granted a hardship exception, which allowed them to offer Robinson-Earl the additional 10-day deal. The team continues to battle numerous injuries, leading to another hardship exemption and enabling them to keep Robinson-Earl around a little longer.

Currently, the Pacers are without several key players due to injury: Tyrese Haliburton, Johnny Furphy, Obi Toppin, Quenton Jackson (two-way), Bennedict Mathurin, and Kam Jones. Additionally, T.J. McConnell has not played yet this season but is expected to return tonight.

The number of injuries on the roster is what permits the Pacers to apply for a hardship exception. Two-way players do not count toward hardship exemptions, but if four players have missed three or more games in a row and will continue to be out, a hardship exemption can be granted to a team with a full 15-man roster.

Furphy’s third missed game since suffering an ankle injury was on Sunday, the team’s most recent game. That timing played a key role in allowing the Pacers to retain Robinson-Earl for 10 more days, although the team certainly misses Furphy for both skill and developmental reasons.

### Why Did the Pacers Retain Jeremiah Robinson-Earl?

Robinson-Earl has filled in capably during his time with the team. So far, he is averaging 5.2 points and 6.8 rebounds per game for the Pacers, including two double-digit rebound games. His defense has also been valuable, as the Pacers continue to lose healthy players at the power forward and wing positions.

“We have a system, we have schemes, concepts, things that we want to do. But at the end of the day, it’s basketball,” Robinson-Earl said about fitting in with the team and picking things up quickly. “We have to compete at the highest level. Being in these situations, you can’t make excuses. You’ve just got to learn on the fly and do the best you can with the circumstances.”

He has played 17.4 minutes per game, a significant number for a player who wasn’t even on the roster for opening night. The Pacers have needed him, and outside of hitting shots, he has produced solid results.

Like the rest of the team, Robinson-Earl has struggled with shooting accuracy, hitting just 32.3% of his field goal attempts so far. However, his work on the boards, low turnover numbers, and overall basketball IQ remain valuable assets.

Robinson-Earl has performed well enough that the Pacers are opting to start him later tonight in their game against the Utah Jazz on the road.

“Definitely a tough situation we’re in with the circumstances of personnel and everything,” Robinson-Earl remarked last week regarding the Pacers’ current roster situation. “We’ve got a bunch of new guys here just trying to figure out the system.”

### Contract Details and Team Moves

Robinson-Earl’s cap hit on his new 10-day deal will be just under $132,000. Across both of his contracts this season, he will receive nearly $264,000.

The Pacers have made several roster moves to manage their injury situation, including signing Martin, waiving James Wiseman to sign Mac McClung, and then waiving McClung to sign Monte Morris. They are currently about $5 million shy of the luxury tax line.

Robinson-Earl is in his fifth NBA season and has career averages of 6.0 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. He has appeared in five games for the Pacers so far this season.

C.J. Stroud has 300 yards, two TDs as Texans lead 49ers 23-7

The Texans struggled offensively on Monday night against the Seahawks, unable to generate significant momentum. In contrast, they have dominated the 49ers, who are currently without key defensive players Nick Bosa and Fred Warner.

Houston’s offense has been impressive today, with four drives consisting of double-digit plays, totaling 57 plays for 393 yards. Their latest drive was particularly effective, covering 94 yards in 12 plays. Quarterback C.J. Stroud connected with Xavier Hutchinson for a 30-yard touchdown during this drive, putting Houston ahead 23-7.

Despite the lead, the game shouldn’t be this close. The Texans have been just 1-for-4 in the red zone today, missing opportunities to extend their advantage. Stroud has completed 27 of 35 passes for 317 yards, throwing two touchdowns and one interception, all while missing key wide receivers Nico Collins and Christian McCaffrey.

Xavier Hutchinson has been a standout, with five receptions for 69 yards. Meanwhile, the 49ers’ offense has struggled, amassing only 89 yards so far.
