Nikita Bier, Head of Product at X, announced the bot purge in a post on the platform, stating, “This week we purged 1.7 million bots engaging in reply spam. You should start noticing improvements in the coming days.” This effort is part of a broader anti-spam initiative designed to restore meaningful engagement and foster authentic conversations for users.
Following this significant removal, X is now focusing on addressing bot activity in Direct Messages (DMs), which have become another hotspot for unsolicited spam.

Bier highlighted that bots flooding inboxes with unsolicited messages are increasingly problematic. As a result, the next phase of X’s anti-spam campaign will concentrate on tackling these issues in users’ DMs.
