The Expanding Quantum Threat to Cryptocurrency The collaboration considers quantum computing’s evolution from hypothetical worry to legitimate threat. Research from the Federal Reserve cautions that quantum computers could facilitate Bitcoin’s private past by employing “harvest now, decrypt later” attacks. Threat actors already have a practice of collecting encrypted blockchain data so they can leverage a sufficiently powerful quantum machine, to break into existing protocols. Experts estimate cryptographically relevant quantum computers could appear between 2028 and 2030. Analysts warn that the quantum machines might be able to crack the encryption protecting perhaps 25% of Bitcoin, specifically the legacy wallets that have exposed public keys.
