Black Sox, Ohtani’s interpreter and more: A look at notable sports betting scandals

In 1920, a Chicago grand jury indicted eight members of the Chicago White Sox on charges of fixing the 1919 World Series, an event that became notorious as the “Black Sox Scandal.” White Sox owner Charles Comiskey immediately suspended the eight players, including “Shoeless” Joe Jackson. A year later, they were permanently banned by newly appointed baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis. Although a jury returned a not guilty verdict on all charges, their ban from baseball stood until they were reinstated by Commissioner Rob Manfred in May 2025.

In 1946, Hockey Hall of Famer Babe Pratt was suspended for gambling but was reinstated weeks later. The NHL Board of Governors issued a warning that any further gambling incidents would lead to a lifetime suspension.

Two years later, in 1948, Billy Taylor and Don Gallinger received lifetime bans from the NHL for betting on hockey games.

In 1951, a major scandal erupted when 35 active and former players were accused of fixing at least 86 games spanning from 1947 to 1951. Among those implicated were four members of the Adolph Rupp-coached Kentucky Wildcats, accused of taking bribes from gamblers ahead of an NIT game against Loyola during the 1948-49 season. An NCAA investigation uncovered several violations, ultimately leading to the cancellation of Kentucky’s 1952-53 season.

The 1980 “Totonero” match-fixing scandal in Italian soccer resulted in the relegation of two teams and penalties for five others. Notably, Paolo Rossi was banned for two years due to his involvement while playing for Perugia.

In 1981, former Boston College basketball player Rick Kuhn and four others, including New York mobster Jimmy Burke, were convicted for conspiring to fix basketball games during the 1978-79 season.

Tulane University suspended its basketball program in 1985 amid point-shaving and other allegations. The program resumed play in the 1989-90 season.

Pete Rose, baseball’s all-time hits leader with 4,256 hits, agreed to a lifetime ban in 1989 after an MLB investigation found he bet on the Cincinnati Reds between 1985 and 1987 while serving as player and manager. Rose died in 2024 still ineligible for induction into Cooperstown, but in May 2025, Commissioner Rob Manfred changed MLB’s eligibility rules, clearing the path for Rose’s Hall of Fame consideration.

In 1996, thirteen Boston College football players were suspended for gambling, including two who bet against their own team in a 45-17 loss to Syracuse. Coach Dan Henning resigned after alerting school officials about the betting allegations. No evidence of point-shaving was found.

Philadelphia Flyers coach Rick Tocchet was placed on two years of probation in 2007 after pleading guilty to conspiracy and promoting gambling while serving as an assistant coach with the Phoenix Coyotes. He was reinstated by the NHL the following year. The investigation, known as “Operation Slapshot,” also implicated several players, Wayne Gretzky’s wife Janet Jones, and Gretzky’s former agent and then-Coyotes GM Michael Barnett.

In 2008, NBA referee Tim Donaghy pleaded guilty to wire fraud for transmitting inside betting information in exchange for thousands of dollars. He was sentenced to 15 months in federal prison.

Former Wales men’s rugby captain Rob Howley was suspended for 18 months in 2019 after it was revealed he made 363 bets, including on Wales’ Six Nations Grand Slam decider against Ireland. He was sent home on the eve of the Rugby World Cup where he was an assistant coach.

England defender Kieran Trippier was banned for 10 weeks in 2021 after providing insider information on his transfer to friends who then bet on the outcome.

At least 15 NFL players have been suspended for gambling violations since 1963. The earliest included Hall of Famers Paul Hornung and Alex Karras, who were suspended for betting on league games. Since 2022, at least 12 players have faced suspensions for betting. Notably, Atlanta Falcons receiver Calvin Ridley was banned for an entire season for betting on NFL games while away from the team for mental health reasons. Indianapolis Colts players Isaiah Rodgers Sr., Rashod Berry, and Demetrius Taylor were suspended indefinitely and released for betting on NFL games but were eventually reinstated.

In May 2023, Brazil’s lower house of Congress launched an investigation into a soccer match-fixing scandal involving players who allegedly secured bookings and penalties in exchange for bribes. This marked the third such probe in the country.

Six-time major champion golfer Phil Mickelson was alleged in 2023 to have wagered more than $1 billion over three decades, according to a book by gambler Billy Walters. Walters also claimed Mickelson intended to place a $400,000 bet on the 2012 Ryder Cup, which Mickelson denied, though he acknowledged his gambling crossed the line into addiction and has since stopped.

In 2023, soccer players Ivan Toney (Brentford), Sandro Tonali (Newcastle), and Nicolò Fagioli (Juventus) all served gambling bans. Fagioli received a seven-month ban from the Italian Soccer Federation, while Tonali was banned for 10 months the previous year for betting on teams he played for.

The NHL suspended Ottawa Senators forward Shane Pinto for 41 games in October 2023 due to sports gambling violations. The league clarified there was no evidence Pinto bet on hockey games. Pinto declined to comment when rejoining the Senators in January 2024.

In March 2024, the Los Angeles Dodgers fired Ippei Mizuhara, interpreter and close friend of star Shohei Ohtani, after reports surfaced of Mizuhara’s ties to an illegal bookmaker. Three months later, Mizuhara pleaded guilty to bank and tax fraud for stealing nearly $17 million from Ohtani’s account to cover gambling debts, baseball card purchases, and medical bills. He exploited language barriers to deceive Ohtani’s financial advisers and even impersonated Ohtani to the bank.

Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter was banned for life from the NBA in April 2024 following a league probe that found he disclosed confidential health information to sports bettors and wagered on games, including bets against his own team. Commissioner Adam Silver described Porter’s actions as “blatant.” The investigation uncovered a large $80,000 bet linked to Porter’s performance in a March 20 game against Sacramento, which could have paid out $1.1 million.

In June 2024, San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano became the first active MLB player banned for life in over a century after being discovered to have placed 387 bets totaling more than $150,000 with a legal sportsbook in 2022 and 2023. Additionally, Oakland Athletics pitcher Michael Kelly received a one-year suspension for baseball betting in the minor leagues. Three other minor leaguers—San Diego’s Jay Groome, Arizona’s Andrew Saalfrank, and Philadelphia’s José Rodríguez—also received one-year bans for betting on major league games, each wagering less than $1,000. Saalfrank and Rodríguez had prior major league experience.

In February 2025, MLB umpire Pat Hoberg was fired for sharing his legal sports gambling accounts with a friend who bet on baseball and for deleting electronic messages relevant to the league’s investigation. While no evidence showed Hoberg personally bet on games or manipulated outcomes, his friend made 141 baseball bets, including eight involving games Hoberg umpired. MLB senior vice president Michael Hill recommended the firing, with Commissioner Manfred upholding the decision. Hoberg, known as one of the best strike zone umpires, is eligible to apply for reinstatement no earlier than spring training 2026.

In June and July 2025, MLB placed Cleveland Guardians pitchers Luis Ortiz and Emmanuel Clase on paid leave amid a sports betting investigation. Ortiz was linked to unusual betting activity on specific pitches during games in Seattle and St. Louis. Clase was placed on leave three weeks later. On November 9, both were indicted on charges of accepting bribes to provide bettors with advance notice of pitch types and intentionally throwing balls instead of strikes to influence bets.

The NCAA announced in September 2025 it was investigating possible sports betting violations involving 13 former men’s basketball players from Eastern Michigan, Temple, Arizona State, New Orleans, North Carolina A&T, and Mississippi Valley. By November, six players had their eligibility revoked. The NCAA’s integrity monitoring and sources flagged suspicious text and social media messages revealing betting on and against their own teams, sharing information with bettors, outcome manipulation, and refusal to cooperate. In related cases, three players from Fresno State and San Jose State were found guilty of manipulating game outcomes and permanently lost eligibility.

In October 2025, a major gambling scandal unfolded involving 31 individuals, including Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, and former player and coach Damon Jones. Billups, the 2004 NBA Finals MVP, was charged with conspiracy to fix high-stakes card games connected to La Cosa Nostra organized crime families, resulting in at least $7 million in losses to unsuspecting gamblers. Rozier faced separate charges related to exploiting private player information to win NBA bets, alongside money laundering and wire fraud conspiracy charges. Damon Jones was implicated in both schemes and has pleaded not guilty.

Beloved World Champion Is Forced To Retire At Only 36 Years Old & Vacate The Title; Breaks Silence In Emotional Speech

A 36-year-old beloved world champion has been forced to retire and vacate her title. Ash by Elegance, also known as Dana Brooke, recently broke her silence to share her thoughts on the difficult situation.

Dana Brooke had to give up the Knockouts World Championship at what was supposed to be one of her biggest moments with the company. She confirmed that she will never wrestle again, officially retiring once and for all. Although the exact health condition causing her retirement remains undisclosed, Dana stated that she was no longer able to continue wrestling.

Speaking in a documentary produced by Fight Network and TNA Wrestling, Dana appeared heartbroken as she confessed her disappointment. She had hoped to accomplish much more as the Knockouts World Champion but unfortunately won’t be able to pursue those plans. “That was just a fact of life,” she said.

The documentary focused on her rise to winning the title and the many hardships she overcame to reach that point. However, having to give up the championship so abruptly was a significant emotional blow. Dana shared,

> “I thought winning that title was hard. This was the hardest thing I ever had to do in my career. Going out there and being vulnerable to the crowd, being vulnerable to myself. I’m getting emotional now. That’s what I said when I knew TNA was a family and that locker room was a family, and that’s what I’m going to miss. I’m going to miss that so, so much.”

Both TNA legend Tommy Dreamer and the documentary indicated that Dana’s retirement was due to “undisclosed health issues.”

### Dana Brooke on Her Future After Giving Up the World Championship

Having relinquished the Knockouts World Championship, Dana Brooke admitted she is uncertain about what the future holds. “I don’t know what happens from here, but my home is here. My home is in TNA,” she said.

She reflected on the bittersweet feeling of stepping out of the ring for the last time without her title:

> “Feels so weird to take that last step out of those ropes and not have my title. I didn’t know a title meant so much, but that ring means so much more. The message doesn’t change. I said it in the start and I’m going to say it now: Never give up.”

Although Dana Brooke will no longer compete in the ring, it is expected that she will continue working with TNA in a backstage role, contributing her experience and passion to the company behind the scenes.

Imanaga becomes eligible for free agency after Cubs, pitcher turn down options, AP source says

CHICAGO (AP) — Left-hander Shota Imanaga has become eligible for free agency after the Chicago Cubs declined an option to extend his contract for the 2026-28 seasons, which would have guaranteed $57 million. Additionally, Imanaga himself turned down a $15.25 million option for 2026, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press. The source spoke on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the team had not yet announced the decisions.

Imanaga initially agreed to a contract in January 2024 that guaranteed $53 million. Over two seasons, he earned $23.25 million, which included a $250,000 escalator for 2025 after finishing fourth in the 2024 National League Cy Young Award voting.

The Cubs faced a deadline this week to decide whether to exercise their option for $20.25 million each in 2026 and 2027, and $17.25 million in 2028. These figures could have increased by $250,000 annually due to the escalator clause. Once the team declined the option, Imanaga had the choice on a separate 2026 option. If he had exercised that, it would have triggered club options worth $24.25 million in 2027 and $15.25 million in 2028.

The Cubs still have the option to extend Imanaga a qualifying offer of $22,025,000 for 2026. Should he decline this offer and sign with another team before the amateur draft, Chicago would receive a draft pick as compensation.

Imanaga, 32, was an All-Star in 2024, finishing the season with a 15-3 record and a 2.91 ERA, and placing fourth in NL Rookie of the Year voting. During the current season, he posted a 9-8 record with a 3.73 ERA in 25 starts. His season was interrupted between May 24 and June 26 by a strained left hamstring.

Jaelan Phillips Lands with the Eagles – How It Shifts the NFC East Power Balance

**Miami Dolphins Trade Jaelan Phillips to Eagles in Blockbuster Deal Ahead of Trade Deadline**

*Published: Nov. 5, 2025, 2:00 a.m. ET*

The Miami Dolphins sent shockwaves through the NFL trade market on Monday by shipping edge rusher Jaelan Phillips to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a 2026 third-round draft pick. This blockbuster move, finalized just 24 hours before the trade deadline, marks another aggressive step by Howie Roseman’s front office to fortify their defense and strengthen their pursuit of back-to-back Super Bowl titles.

For the defending champions, currently sitting at 6-2 and holding the No. 1 seed in the NFC, this acquisition was not a luxury — it was a necessity that could redefine how their defensive line dominates playoff opponents as the season heads into November.

### Dolphins Shock with Jaelan Phillips Trade to Eagles

The 26-year-old Phillips brings immediate credibility to the Eagles’ pass rush rotation, a unit that has ranked in the bottom third of the NFL this season with just 16 sacks through eight games. What makes this deal particularly intriguing is the reunion factor: Phillips will reconnect with Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, who served as Miami’s defensive coordinator in 2023.

That season proved to be a revelation for Phillips, who recorded 6.5 sacks in just eight games before suffering a torn Achilles that derailed his momentum.

For those looking to leverage Philadelphia’s defensive improvements in the betting market, monitoring the Eagles’ defensive performance through platforms offering competitive angles—such as exploring bonuses like the bet99 promo code to access enhanced odds on defensive outcomes—provides a strategic edge as the team’s line strengthens down the stretch.

### A Defensive Game-Changer

Phillips’ availability sparked a firestorm among contenders, with the San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots also expressing genuine interest. However, the Eagles moved swiftly to secure a player they knew intimately.

Earlier in 2023, Phillips had terrorized Philadelphia’s offensive line, including a memorable moment when he drove straight through five-time All-Pro Lane Johnson to pressure quarterback Jalen Hurts. Now, that same aggression will line up alongside Josh Sweat, who returns as the Eagles’ primary edge threat following a turbulent offseason that saw Brandon Graham retire and other departures.

Phillips’ statistical profile is compelling: he has already recorded three sacks this season across nine games, accumulated 25 tackles, and logged seven quarterback hits. While his injury history—including a torn Achilles in 2023 and a season-ending knee injury in 2024—raises durability concerns, the fact that he has remained healthy throughout the 2025 campaign suggests his body is responding well.

More importantly, his presence alongside Sweat creates a nightmare scenario for NFC East rivals, particularly the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys offense will face its most formidable challenge yet when these division rivals meet next.

Dallas’ offensive line ranks 23rd in the league, and adding another elite edge rusher to an Eagles front already led by All-Pro Jalen Carter gives offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer precious few answers. Quarterback Dak Prescott will have minimal time in the pocket against a defense now fortified with cornerbacks Michael Carter II and Jaire Alexander — transformations Roseman orchestrated during the same week-long trading spree.

### How the Trade Elevates Philadelphia’s Super Bowl Odds

This acquisition lifts Philadelphia’s Super Bowl odds, currently sitting at +1000, placing the Eagles comfortably in the conversation alongside contenders like Green Bay (+950) and Detroit (+900). The Eagles are signaling to the rest of the conference that their 2024 championship wasn’t a one-year anomaly; it was the foundation of a dynasty-caliber run.

Meanwhile, the Dolphins recognized that their 2-7 record and organizational upheaval necessitated rebuilding. Shipping out Phillips, who was heading into free agency anyway, allowed Miami to accumulate draft capital while saving salary cap space.

New interim general manager Champ Kelly’s first move signals a complete reset in South Florida.

With Phillips now donning midnight green, the Eagles have transformed their pass rush from a liability into a legitimate strength. The NFC East just became significantly less competitive, and Philadelphia’s path to another Super Bowl just became considerably more achievable.

How Gauntlet mode works – Battlefield 6: REDSEC

**Introducing Gauntlet: A Brand-New Game Mode in Battlefield 6**

Gauntlet is an exciting, free-to-play game mode introduced in Battlefield 6 with the REDSEC update. While it shares a space alongside the battle royale gametype, Gauntlet offers a completely different experience. Teams are still eliminated as the rounds progress, and there is an overall winner, but success in Gauntlet isn’t solely dependent on getting kills.

### How Gauntlet Mode Works

Gauntlet is a tournament-style gametype featured in Battlefield 6’s new multiplayer experience, REDSEC. In this mode, eight teams of four players each compete against one another to complete specific objectives.

The competition unfolds over four rounds, with the lowest scoring teams knocked out after every round:

– **Round 1:** 8 teams
– **Round 2:** 6 teams
– **Round 3:** 4 teams
– **Round 4:** 2 teams

To advance to the next round, your team must avoid finishing among the bottom two teams once the match ends. This can be challenging, as all teams compete simultaneously on the same map, striving to complete the same objective.

### Scoring and Objectives

Your team’s progress is determined by the points you earn, which vary depending on the current objective. Before each round begins, you’ll receive a brief overview of the new objective.

Objectives can differ from round to round. For example, sometimes you might need to collect and deliver data drives to a drone, while other times your focus might be on eliminating enemy players and protecting your high-value target.

Points are awarded for a range of actions including:

– Successfully collecting data
– Eliminating enemy players
– Surviving through the round
– Holding specific zones
– Other mission-critical activities

Mastering these objectives and earning enough points is key to advancing through the rounds and ultimately securing victory in Gauntlet mode.

Experience the thrill of intense team competition and strategic play by jumping into Gauntlet in Battlefield 6 today!

Tony Khan has allegedly stopped using 32-year-old in AEW as he’s likely to join WWE – Reports

AEW head honcho Tony Khan is reportedly disinterested in utilizing 32-year-old New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) athlete David Finlay due to rumors suggesting that Finlay may be WWE-bound. The star in question competed for the Jacksonville-based promotion earlier this year, in January.

Recent observations highlight a pattern where All Elite Wrestling’s Creative Head, Tony Khan, tends to avoid prominently and regularly featuring talent who are expected to leave AEW to join their competition. This approach has been evident with wrestlers such as Miro, Blake Monroe, and Ricky Starks, who have not appeared on AEW programming for extended periods, presumably due to rumors of their departures. Similar speculation surrounds Chris Jericho and Private Party, according to recent rumors.

According to Dave Meltzer’s commentary on a recent edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, the same reasoning might apply to NJPW star David Finlay. Meltzer suggested that the Bullet Club War Dogs leader has not been showcased as frequently on AEW television compared to his teammates—such as Gabe Kidd, Clark Connors, Drilla Moloney, and Robbie X—because of the possibility that Finlay could sign with the Stamford-based WWE promotion.

“Maybe there’s the feeling that David is going to end up in WWE and Tony doesn’t want to use him,” Meltzer stated.

Meltzer further emphasized that Tony Khan has little interest in featuring performers who are projected to be headed to WWE, especially if those talents are not directly under his employ.

“Tony Khan doesn’t want to use people who are going to go to WWE even though it’s inevitable that a lot of the guys he’s using will end up in WWE just because of how wrestling works. But if you’re pretty sure they’re gonna go, then why use them?” Meltzer added.

David Finlay wrestled under the AEW banner earlier this year at the AEW x NJPW x CMLL Wrestle Dynasty event in January, where he defeated Brody King in singles competition. He also faced current AEW Men’s World Champion Hangman Page in a one-on-one match in June 2022, though he was unsuccessful in that bid.

### AEW Dynamite Announcements for November 5

The upcoming November 5 edition of Wednesday Night Dynamite will air live from the Bayou Music Center in Houston, Texas. So far, only two matches have been announced for the show:

– A trios bout featuring The Opps versus Hangman Page, Eddie Kingston, and Hook.
– A quarterfinal matchup from the ongoing AEW Women’s World Tag Team Championship Tournament, pitting Willow Nightingale and Harley Cameron against Athena and Mercedes Mone.

It remains to be seen what Tony Khan and his creative team have planned for viewers this Wednesday. Stay tuned for more updates as the show approaches.
