Virginia Commonwealth University secured an 81-77 victory over the University of Maine in a thrilling women’s basketball game on Friday night in Richmond, Virginia.
The Black Bears (0-3) held a 10-point lead with just 3:01 remaining in the second quarter. However, the Rams went on a decisive 14-0 run late in the quarter to narrow the gap, closing the half trailing by only two points, 32-30.
VCU (2-1) took control of the game early in the third quarter. A jump shot by Lucia Sotelo Miguez with 6:39 left put the Rams ahead for good, and they maintained the lead through the remainder of the contest.
Individually, Kaliyah Sain led Maine with an impressive 26 points and 10 rebounds. Teammates Adrianna Smith and Asta Blauenfeldt also made significant contributions, scoring 22 points (along with seven assists and five rebounds) and 17 points, respectively.
On the VCU side, Katarina Knezevic paced the Rams with 19 points. Cyriah Griffin and Ann Zachariah each added 16 points, while Patricia Augustin contributed 12 points to help secure the win.
The closely contested game showcased strong performances from both teams, but VCU’s late surge ultimately made the difference.
