The Minnesota Vikings are set to welcome their center, Ryan Kelly, back to the practice field this week. Head coach Kevin O’Connell announced during his Wednesday press conference that Kelly’s 21-day window to return from injured reserve officially opens on Wednesday.
Kelly has been sidelined since late September due to his latest documented concussion. To enhance his safety moving forward, O’Connell mentioned that Kelly will be wearing a new helmet and is also likely to use a Guardian Cap during practices and games.
As highlighted by ESPN’s Kevin Seifert, Kelly has experienced five documented concussions throughout his career. Despite this, the Vikings showed confidence in his abilities by signing him to a two-year deal in March. Prior to joining Minnesota, Kelly spent his first nine professional seasons with the Indianapolis Colts.
It’s worth noting that Kelly has not started all 17 games in a season since 2022, which could be indicative of the impact injuries have had on his playing time.
During the 21-day practice window, Kelly can be activated back to the active roster at any time. Vikings fans will be closely watching as the center works his way back onto the field.
